Jaxon gazed quietly at Sally's features, then said softly, "Don't ever belittle yourself just to lift me up."
Sally was taken aback by his words. 'So he was upset because of what I said on the mountainside.' Sally wondered.
"I was just trying to set the mood. After all, at such a crucial moment, what else could I have done?" she said.
Jaxon looked at Sally with utter seriousness, his eyes full of sincerity. "Sally, you're truly extraordinary, and we're a perfect match in every way. You've long since become a part of my heart. Even if you don't want to admit this to others, at least don't deny it—or put it down."
Though not a confession, his words struck deeper into Sally's heart than any declaration of love ever could. "Jaxon, what's with the serious face," she hesitated.
"What? Is my seriousness scaring you? Afraid you can't commit to me? Or that someday you'll just walk away?" Jaxon gently cradled Sally's face in his hands, his gaze growing deeper and more intense.
Sally found herself completely stumped by Jaxon's barrage of questions, unsure how to respond.
Truth be told, Sally never felt secure about her relationship with Jaxon. That uncertainty was exactly why she couldn't bring herself to make any promises to him. "Jaxon, I—"
"Anyway, the divorce is finalized. That's half the battle won. So don't worry about anything else, just leave it all to me. I've got you completely covered," Jaxon promised.
At his words, a lump formed in Sally's throat as a sudden, bittersweet ache welled up in her chest.
Ever since her grandfather passed away, no one had said those words to her again.
The feeling of having someone's unwavering support, something she had never experienced in her previous marriage, she finally found in Jaxon.
It was as if her heart, numb for so long, suddenly sprouted new shoots, breaking through the soil in an instant. That feeling left her both thrilled and terrified.
With her eyes rimmed red, Sally gazed at Jaxon standing before her. In that moment, she was suddenly overwhelmed by the urge to kiss him.
But Jaxon was quicker. Before Sally could react, he'd already leaned down and claimed her lips in a searing kiss.
This time, Sally didn't pull away. Instead, she melted into his kiss, pouring all her pent-up emotions into it.
Jaxon scooped Sally up in his arms and strode swiftly to the desk, setting her down gently on its smooth surface.
He stood while she sat perched on the desk. The height was just perfect.
At that moment, the memory of her first visit to Longbay suddenly surfaced in her mind.
It was under this very desk that I once hid. Looking back, it feels like that was the day my bond with Jaxon truly began.
'Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that in just half a year, they'd end up like this,' Sally thought.
"Look at me." Jaxon wrapped one arm firmly around Sally's back, while his other hand grasped her chin and tilted her face upward with deliberate force.
Her hand on the desk clenched involuntarily.
Jaxon whispered, his voice low and possessive, "I'll have this branded in your memory, the one by your side now is me, and none but me shall ever be."
Sally could no longer process his words, her gaze locked on her reflection shimmering in his pupils. Staring, transfixed, as she found herself sinking ever deeper.
From the desk to the couch, their final sex that night was against the floor-to-ceiling windows in the study.
Jaxon carried Sally to the bathroom and gently washed her clean. Then he tucked her under his covers, wrapped his arms around her, and together they drifted into a deep, contented sleep.
Yet that night, Sally found her heart unable to settle, the restlessness lingering long after everything else had quieted down.
Never before had she been so vividly, so unmistakably aware of her feelings for Jaxon as she was now.
That night, emotions grew wildly, like unchecked weeds. Suddenly, she found herself yearning for a future with him. But she knew all too well. Now was not the time.
That night, when Sally finally saw her own heart clearly, she lay awake until dawn.
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Sally quietly hailed a cab and slipped away from Longbay.
When Jaxon woke up to find Sally gone, he immediately went downstairs searching for her, only to be told by Wendy that she had already left.
"She's gone?" Jaxon frowned in surprise. "When did she leave?"
"Around six o'clock. I'd just gotten up and was going to say hi to her, but she left in such a hurry that we missed each other. I only saw her back," Wendy explained.
A chill flashed through Jaxon's gaze as he listened to Wendy's words, his eyes instantly turning frosty.
Last time, after they spent the night together, she slipped out before dawn. He thought that at least this time they would get to have breakfast together, but when he woke up, the bed was empty. She was gone again.
'Heh. What was I even expecting?' Jaxon thought bitterly. 'Shouldn't I be used to this by now?'
A pang of bitterness surged through Jaxon's chest, lingering stubbornly like an unwelcome guest.
Jaxon arrived at the office, his fingers hovering over his phone, ready to call Sally, but in the end, he slipped it back into his pocket without dialing.
At noon, Connor came to discuss a new partnership project with Jaxon. As he entered the office with the contract in hand, he was immediately struck by Jaxon's thunderous expression.
"What's with that face? Who pissed you off this time?" Connor settled onto the sofa, tossing the contract onto the coffee table. He crossed his long legs and studied Jaxon with a curious, slightly teasing gaze.
Jaxon pulled out a cigarette and placed it between his lips. As he lit it, tendrils of smoke instantly wreathed around his brooding face.
After a long silence, Jaxon finally responded quietly, "There's something I need to ask you."
Seeing Jaxon's unusually serious expression, Connor analyzed, "If you're coming to me for advice, I'm guessing it must be about relationship troubles, right?"
"It's not about me. It's about a friend of mine," Jaxon said with forced seriousness, locking eyes with Connor. "I need you to answer this objectively."
"Alright," Connor replied, leaning back in his chair. "Shoot."
Jaxon looked at Connor, his voice low and uncertain. "If a woman always sneaks out quietly after their sex, what do you think that means? Does it mean she doesn't really love the guy at all?"
"Wait? Are you talking about Ms. Smith? Don't tell me she just slept with you and then bailed right after?" He shook his head in disbelief. "Wow, I never thought she had it in her, hooking up with you and then just walking out like that."
"Did I say it was me?" Jaxon retorted.
Jaxon's fingers involuntarily tightened around his cigarette for a brief moment.
Noticing the displeasure on Jaxon's face, Connor wisely backed off. "Alright, not you. But let me guess. This good friend of yours probably shares your last name, right?"
Jaxon fixed Connor with a hard look. "Connor, I'm dead serious."
Connor cleared his throat and got straight to the point. "Alright, enough joking around. Actually, it's not hard to figure out the answer to your question—there are really just two reasons."
"Go on." Jaxon flicked the ash from his cigarette, the frost in his gaze intensifying.
Connor said, "The first reason's simple. She doesn't love him, but she still keeps this thing going. Probably she just thinks he's a pretty good hookup."
Jaxon's lashes gave an almost imperceptible flutter at his words.
Connor caught the fleeting flicker of surprise in Jaxon's eyes.
Jaxon took a deep breath, then asked quietly, "And the second reason?"
