Half an hour later, at Springea House, Jaxon emerged from the car and leaned against its side, lighting a cigarette as his brooding gaze settled on the figures beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Sally and an unidentified man sat face-to-face by the first-floor window, engaged in animated conversation. Radiating warmth and harmony, they could easily pass for a couple deeply in love.
"Caleb?" Jaxon flicked the ash from his cigarette and softly called out to Caleb, who was still in the driver's seat.
Hearing the call, Caleb quickly got out of the car. "Mr. Zale, what are your instructions?"
"Head home first. Leave the car keys. I'll drive myself later," Jaxon said.
Caleb momentarily froze, but ultimately handed over the keys with both hands. "Okay, Mr. Zale."
Jaxon took the car keys but stayed leaning against the hood of the car, his eyes never leaving Sally.
Caleb had already taken in the whole scene. In his memory, while Jaxon always seemed cold, he rarely gave off such an oppressive aura. Today's chill was fundamentally different from his usual aloofness.
Not daring to linger, Caleb quickly turned and left.
After finishing his cigarette, Jaxon pulled out his phone and dialed Sally's number.
At that moment, inside the restaurant, Sally's phone, resting on the table, suddenly rang.
When she saw the caller ID, her hand holding the fork froze for a moment.
Paden, sitting across from her, noticed her reaction. He asked curiously, "What's wrong? Who's calling?"
Sally forced a smile. "It's nothing. You go ahead and eat. I'll just take this call."
"Alright," Paden replied.
Sally got up and walked into the restaurant corridor, the phone still ringing insistently. She cleared her throat, hesitated, but finally answered.
As soon as she put the phone to her ear, Jaxon's deep, gravelly voice came through. "Where are you?"
Her hand froze for a moment. A wave of unease washed over her. For a split second, she even suspected Jaxon was nearby.
Worried he might actually be close, Sally didn't dare to lie. "I'm having dinner with a friend at the restaurant. Did you need something, Mr. Zale?"
The line suddenly fell silent for a moment.
After a long pause, Jaxon finally spoke, his voice low. "Haven't heard from you in a few days. Just thought I'd check in."
Sally attempted to laugh off her nervousness. "For a moment there, I thought you were calling to check up on me."
"If that's how you want to see it, I won't deny it." Jaxon's voice turned dangerously low. "So, this friend you're having dinner with—is it a man or a woman, Ms. Smith?"
Sally's heart inexplicably fluttered. For some reason, she just couldn't bring herself to tell him she was having dinner with a male friend.
Given Jaxon's possessive nature, she knew he'd grill her relentlessly if he found out.
"A female friend," Sally blurted out without hesitation.
As soon as her words left her lips, a dark chuckle came from the other end. Jaxon said, his voice low, "A female friend, huh?"
Sally could always sense an ominous undercurrent in his voice. But she could never quite pinpoint where that danger came from.
"All right, I need to get back to dinner. If there's nothing else, I'll hang up now," Sally said. Without waiting for a response, she abruptly ended the call.
She powered off her phone in haste, that guilt-ridden panic making it impossible for her to face him any longer.
Back at the table, Paden kept up light, sporadic conversation with her, occasionally serving her food, just as considerate as ever.
After dinner, Sally and Paden walked side by side toward the parking lot.
As they reached their car, they unexpectedly spotted Jaxon leaning against the Maybach parked next to them. He was resting against the hood, cigarette in hand, exhaling smoke as he tilted his head to fix her with a deep, intense gaze.
The moment Sally saw him, her steps involuntarily paused. 'Damn this intuition—always right when I least want it to be,' she thought, frustrated. And the worst part was that she'd just lied straight to his face.
Paden seemed to notice the two exchanging glances and looked at Sally with curiosity. "Sally, do you know him?"
"Yes." Sally quickly turned to Paden. "Paden, I have something to talk over with him. You head back first, okay?"
"But you didn't drive today. How are you going to get home? Maybe I should wait for you," Paden offered.
"No need." Sally waved her hand instinctively, her voice holding a hint of unease. "I'll just take a taxi later."
Even though she tried to hide it, the ever-observant Paden still caught it. He quickly glanced at the man across from them, then looked back at Sally. The tense atmosphere between them was obvious.
'That guy looks so familiar. Where have I seen him before? Maybe in some financial news,' Paden thought, but he just couldn't recall the man's name.
The way the man looked at Sally was anything but innocent. He looked exactly like a man waiting for his girlfriend.
But Sally had just said she was in the middle of a divorce, and her ex-husband, whose photo Paden had seen before, looked nothing like this man.
"Paden?" Sally called softly again.
Coming back to himself, Paden offered her a faint smile. "Alright, I'll take my leave first."
After Paden drove off in the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Sally finally turned her gaze back to Jaxon's face.
Jaxon flicked the ash from his cigarette, his voice low and mocking. "Ms. Smith, so this is the female friend you were talking about?"
She stalked toward him, her expression dark. "You've been following me? And fishing for answers? What's your game?"
Seeing the irritation on her face, Jaxon let out a dark chuckle.
After a pause, he finally spoke, his tone mocking, "In such a hurry to send him away? Not going to introduce us? He looks younger than you, doesn't he? So full of youthful vigor? Ms. Smith, are you sure you can handle that?"
Sally glared at him in irritation. Instead of responding to her, he just kept making ambiguous remarks. She really couldn't fathom what he was after. But his behavior today was truly getting on her nerves.
So, playing along, she shot back bluntly, "If I can handle a man like you, Mr. Zale, what makes you think I can't handle anyone else?"
