As soon as Sally finished speaking, Jaxon quickly flicked away the cigarette in his hand.
Straightening up, Jaxon strode to Sally's side. His long, well-defined fingers slipped around her sexy waist, spinning her effortlessly before pressing her firmly against the car hood.
Sally was startled by Jaxon's sudden move; her body gave an involuntary shiver.
When Sally looked up and met Jaxon's gaze, she saw a danger in his eyes she'd never seen before.
Jaxon's grip on her waist suddenly tightened with bruising force. His voice dripped with menace. "What? If I hadn't shown up today, Ms. Smith, were you planning to get a room with that guy after dinner?"
As his words hung in the air, Sally's head snapped up, her eyes wide with disbelief as she stared at Jaxon. 'Did he really just say that to me?' she thought. 'Never in a million years did I think he'd say something like that.'
Sally's brows furrowed sharply. "Jaxon, in your mind, am I just some cheap woman who'd sleep around with anyone?"
"I wasn't going to jump to conclusions," Jaxon said with a chilling smile, "but you left before I even woke up that day, and today you lied about having dinner with a woman when it was actually a man.
"Ms. Smith, with behavior like that, it's hard not to get the wrong idea."
It was the first time Jaxon had ever misunderstood her like this. Sally suddenly felt a surge of anger rise in her chest.
These past few days, she had finally started to take their relationship seriously and tried to open up to Jaxon. She had even thought that once the divorce papers came through, she would say yes to him right away.
But tonight, his baseless accusations and misunderstandings inexplicably made her heart grow cold.
"Since when have you been stalking me?" Sally lifted her gaze, fixing him with a steady, icy stare.
"Since you left the clinic." Jaxon didn't bother hiding it; the menace in his voice only grew more intense.
Sally's eyes widened in shock. "So, is stalking some kind of family tradition for the Zale men?"
"Don't you dare compare me to him," Jaxon snapped, his voice carrying a dangerous undercurrent of anger.
Sally swiftly shoved her hand against Jaxon's chest and demanded, "Let me go."
Jaxon pressed on, "Explain yourself about what happened today, and I'll let you go."
"Look, there's really nothing to explain. It was just dinner with a friend, nothing more. If you are going to get jealous over something this trivial, then there's really nothing left for us to discuss," she said.
Jaxon suddenly snapped his hand to her chin, tightening his grip with bruising force. "Do you really think I care about some damn dinner? What I care about is—why did you lie to me?"
Sally explained, "I only lied because I was afraid you'd get angry."
"Bullshit," Jaxon's furious roar echoed through every corner of the parking lot.
Sally had never seen Jaxon this furious before. A heavy weight settled in her chest as her heart slowly sank.
"Then why did you test me in the first place? Is our bond really so weak that you felt you had to?" she demanded, her voice trembling with hurt and anger.
Jaxon sneered, his voice tinged with bitterness. "Guess it really is that weak. If I hadn't tested you, I'd never have known you'd go behind my back like this."
"What exactly did I do behind your back?" Sally's chest tightened with frustration. "Did you see me sleep with him? Or did you see me—"
Before Sally could finish her sentence, Jaxon didn't hesitate and cut her off, crushing his lips against hers in a fierce, punishing kiss.
The sudden kiss set Sally's heart racing, pounding wildly in her chest. The kiss was laced with punishment, so intense that Sally could barely endure it.
This was their first passionate public kiss; the intensity sent tingling all through Sally's body.
'What if Brad's spies are watching? If they saw this, it would blow up into a huge scandal,' Sally thought anxiously. Instinctively, she pressed firmly against Jaxon's chest again.
Jaxon locked his grip around her wrist, his kiss growing deeper and more insistent.
The spot they were in was completely secluded. There were no pedestrians around, but there was no guarantee security cameras weren't watching.
Seeing that Jaxon was nearly losing control, Sally didn't hesitate and sank her teeth sharply into his lower lip.
The moment pain shot through his lip, Jaxon recoiled and instantly released her.
A trickle of blood dripped from Jaxon's lip. He swiped it away with his thumb, then examined the crimson smear with a cold, unreadable gaze. 'Hmph. She actually made me bleed,' he wondered.
Sally watched Jaxon's low, hoarse laugh, and the tightness in her chest grew suffocating. This was only their second real fight, and it was already far more intense than the first.
"Go home and cool off first. We shouldn't see each other for a while," Sally shot him a glare and said bluntly. She quickly strode off toward the parking lot entrance.
Jaxon let his bloodied hand fall to his side, his gaze turning ice-cold—a look Sally had never seen before.
Jaxon kept his eyes on Sally's retreating figure, feeling as if he'd been cast into the ocean—unable to swim to the surface or sink to the bottom. A suffocating sense of despair overwhelmed him.
This was a feeling he had never experienced before.
The man Jaxon saw today was nothing like Brad or Finn, a knot forming in his stomach. Jaxon could tell, clear as day, that Sally saw him as someone truly special.
Jaxon snatched out his phone and dialed Caleb's number.
No sooner had the call connected than Caleb's voice came through. "Mr. Zale, what can I do for you?"
With a dark expression, Jaxon ordered, "The man who had dinner with Sally tonight—I want a full report on him on my desk by tomorrow morning. No excuses."
Caleb responded promptly, 'Yes, Mr. Zale.'
After hanging up, Jaxon cast one last cold glance in the direction where Sally had gone. With a heavy heart, he finally strode toward the driver's seat.
It was getting late, this part of town was pretty deserted, and hailing a cab here wasn't easy. Sally going home alone like this could be risky.
As Jaxon pulled up to the entrance, he caught sight of Sally already getting into a taxi. Jaxon floored it and sped after her.
"Miss, that Maybach behind us seems to be tailing us. Someone you know?" Inside the taxi, the driver said. He glanced back at her through the rearview mirror.
Lost in thought, Sally was jolted back to reality by the driver's words. She quickly whipped her head around to look behind them. Sure enough, it was Jaxon's car.
Sally was still fuming. There was no way she was going to pay him any attention. Bluntly, Sally said, "Just ignore him. Keep driving."
The driver shot her a knowing grin. "Is that your husband? Trouble in paradise?"
The words hit Sally's ears, and for a split second, she froze. She did have those foolish fantasies once, but tonight's disappointment shattered every last one of them.
'How laughable it all seems now,' Sally thought bitterly. 'So this is how little Jaxon trusts me, huh?'
