Carlos nodded automatically. "Okay, Sally."
Sally strode into the consultation room, ready for the next patient.
Brad was absolutely fuming.
He thought, 'When did she get so sharp with her comebacks? She can roast someone without even using a single curse word.'
Carlos said politely, "Sir, are you feeling unwell? If not, I'll have to ask you to leave. Please don't hold up our patients. After all, they come first. I hope you understand."
Brad lifted his piercing eyes and met Carlos's gaze, his anger only growing.
He wondered, 'Where did she find such a perfectly obedient assistant?'
Brad let out a cold snort, glared at him, and stormed out of the clinic without saying a word.
Sally looked up when she heard a knock at the door.
Carlos slid the door open and poked his head in. "Sally, he's gone."
"Thanks." Sally's lips curled into a gentle smile.
Carlos took off his mask, leaned against the doorframe, and asked casually, "Is he your husband?"
"Yeah." Sally glanced down at the supply order in her hands and said, "But we're about to get divorced. Once he signs the papers, we'll just need to make it official."
"Good call." Carlos gave her a big thumbs-up. "A player isn't worth keeping around."
Sally looked up, a faint smile on her lips. "Right? Do you think he looks like a player too?"
"I'm pretty good at reading people. Honestly, he just doesn't seem like a good match for you," Carlos added curiously. "I thought the guy I saw on interview day was your husband! He seemed like a real catch... "
Sally's hand, still holding the form, froze for a moment.
"The day of the interview?" Sally's mind was racing, and suddenly, an unbelievably handsome face popped into her thoughts.
It was Jaxon.
"You've got it wrong. He's my husband's uncle. Well, technically, my ex's uncle... " said Sally.
Carlos chuckled, "So you're all family? No wonder they are so good-looking. Honestly, if he wasn't your uncle-in-law, I'd totally root for you two. You look amazing together."
Sally glanced up at Carlos, blushing a little. "Come on. Don't say that! What if he hears you?"
Carlos said, "I swear, that guy looked so familiar. I feel like I've seen him somewhere before... "
Sally said, "He's the CEO of the Crownstone Group. And that University of Westmere you graduated from? He's a major shareholder there too."
Carlos's eyes went wide in shock at the words.
Even though this was their first time meeting, the Crownstone Group and Jaxon were basically household names in all of Westmere.
Carlos asked, "So that's Jaxon?"
Sally nodded slightly. "Looks like you've heard of him."
Carlos nodded. "Of course! Mr. Zale is a legend in the business world. Who hasn't heard of him?"
Footsteps sounded at the door.
A patient was there.
Carlos said, "Sally, there's a patient. We'll catch up later, okay?"
"Okay." Sally watched as Carlos closed the door behind her, a faint smile tugging at her lips.
She never thought Carlos was so gossipy.
On her first day, the clinic did even better than Sally had hoped. The earnings were way above what she'd expected.
It was already pretty late by the time Sally wrapped up work.
After Carlos left, Sally was getting ready to head home too.
She had just grabbed her bag and stood up when she saw someone walk in.
It was Lena and Elise.
Sally's brows knit together. "What are you two doing here?"
"What else would we be doing at a clinic? Obviously, we're here for a checkup." Elise strode right in, plopped down in the chair, and pressed a hand to her forehead. "I'm feeling pretty dizzy, Mrs. Zale. Can you take a look and tell me what's up?"
Sally glanced back at her. "We're closed. If you need a doctor, go see your dad."
"The clinic might be closed, but you're still here, aren't you?" Lena took off her sunglasses and said coolly, "Why not use this time to check her pulse? Everyone says your medical skills are amazing, but who knows if that's true."
"No matter how good I am, I'm not treating either of you. Please leave." Sally walked briskly to the desk, her face cold as she pointed at the door.
Elise's face darkened. "What kind of doctor kicks patients out? If I spread the word, do you think anyone would still come here? I've never heard of a doctor picking and choosing their patients. What a joke... "
"Exactly!" Lena's voice was low. "Sounds like you don't want to run your clinic."
Sally said, "I do want to run my clinic, but I have principles. I refuse to do business with idiots."
Hearing this, Elise slammed her hand on the desk, furious. "Sally, you'd better watch your mouth. Who are you calling an idiot?"
"Whoever wants to see a doctor here, that's who." Sally leaned on the desk, looking up at them, her smile growing wider.
"You!" Sally's words had clearly gotten under Elise's skin. Her chest was heaving with anger.
Lena instinctively reached out and grabbed Elise's arm.
Elise had no choice but to shut up and step aside.
Lena said, "Mrs. Zale, I know you still hold a grudge against us for what happened before, but that's all in the past. I hope you can stop judging us."
Sally shot Lena a look. "Oh really? Why did you say I was judging you? If anything, you two have been coming after me since before I even went to prison. Am I wrong?"
Lena was left speechless.
Sally's smile turned even colder. "If that's all, you two can leave now. I won't be treating you."
She pointed toward the door again.
Lena shot Sally a glare. Then she quickly turned and left with Elise.
Sally watched their backs as they walked away, her eyes growing dark and unreadable.
Once outside, both Lena and Elise looked absolutely livid.
When they got to the car, Lena looked at Elise. "Why hasn't that thing I asked you to handle made any progress yet?"
Elise replied, "It's only the first day. Things don't move that fast. We should be able to act by the day after tomorrow."
Lena frowned, "Hurry it up. I can't stand her acting all high and mighty anymore!"
Elise gave a sly smile. "Relax, Lena. She won't be able to act high and mighty for much longer..."
