It was already late by the time Sally got home.
She pulled out her phone and glanced at the screen. It was already nine o'clock.
Her eyes drifted to the second number. It was still in airplane mode.
Ever since she'd powered it off in front of Caleb, she hadn't turned it back on. Lately, her mind had been wrapped up in work at the clinic, and she'd barely thought about the crystalware business.
She wondered if Jaxon had tried calling her again these past few days.
Lost in thought, Sally walked toward the door.
Her thumb hovered over the second number, and just as she was about to switch off airplane mode, a deep voice came from the doorway. "Watch where you're going, or you'll trip."
The familiar voice made Sally look up almost on instinct.
Flustered, she quickly switched on airplane mode and turned off the screen.
Jaxon stood at the entrance of Windmere Estates, leaning against a stone pillar. Dressed in a suit, he held a cigarette between his fingers. The smoke curled around him, softening his usually sharp features and giving him an unexpectedly gentle look.
Sally asked, "Mr. Zale, what brings you by all of a sudden?"
Jaxon flicked the ash from his cigarette and then stubbed it out. "I just wanted to check in on Lillian. I didn't expect you to still be out. It's pretty late. She's probably already asleep, right?"
"You should've given me a heads-up before coming. I could've had my friend let you in. But yeah, Lillian's probably asleep by now. I make sure she's in bed by 8:40 every night..."
"Friend?" Jaxon raised his brows slightly. "Your friend lives here too?"
"Yeah, my best friend lives with me. She helps take care of Lillian," Sally replied calmly. "She was the one who called me last time. You two actually met at the hospital..."
Jaxon nodded thoughtfully but didn't say anything else.
Sally felt it was a little awkward for them to just stand at the door, so she spoke up, "Would you like to come in for some coffee, Mr. Zale?"
Jaxon said, "No, thanks. I should get going anyway."
"Alright then, drive safe," said Sally.
He gave her a slight nod, watching as she went inside.
After a few steps, Jaxon called out behind her, "Did the clinic opening go smoothly today?"
Sally stopped in her tracks. "Everything went great. Oh, that reminds me. The flower baskets you sent were beautiful. I really loved them. Thank you, Mr. Zale..."
"Those weren't from me. A friend of mine sent them." His voice was low, his face unreadable.
Sally smiled softly, "I've never even met the landlord, so I doubt he'd send me flower baskets. Anyway, whoever sent them, thank you all the same."
Jaxon gave a faint, almost amused smile. "You're welcome."
Sally's smile lit up under the warm glow of the streetlamp, bright and dazzling.
For a split second, Jaxon seemed distracted.
Just as Sally was about to head inside, Jaxon spoke up again, "If the clinic ever needs anything, you can reach out to me or Caleb."
Sally's back tensed up for a moment.
He was basically saying he had her back.
A rush of surprise and gratitude filled her heart.
Sally smiled and replied, "Okay."
Jaxon shot her a quick glance and then got into his car.
Sally didn't look away until his taillights disappeared from view.
On the second day, business doubled from the opening day. Sally was swamped, and Carlos' hands ached from filling prescriptions.
They didn't wrap up until ten that night.
Sally even picked up a late-night snack for Carlos to take home.
Carlos was so touched that he kept raving about how sweet Sally was, and even took the chance to call Brad totally clueless for not appreciating her.
Sally was grinning from ear to ear.
On the third day, Sally showed up early, but Carlos had beaten her there and was already seeing patients.
As soon as Sally changed into her doctor's gown and stepped out, a piercing shout suddenly rang out from the entrance.
"Everyone, don't come to this clinic anymore! All the doctors here are quacks! Look what they did to my son. He just had an allergy, and now their treatment put him into shock!"
There were already a couple of patients waiting in line at the clinic.
When they heard the commotion, everyone turned to look toward the door.
Sally and Carlos both looked up at the noise.
An elderly woman came in, followed by four people carrying a middle-aged man.
Sally recognized him instantly.
He was the allergy patient from their opening day.
If she remembered right, his name was Casey Quinn.
Sally hadn't even opened her mouth yet when Carlos stepped forward. "Ma'am, please don't make wild accusations. We're all highly trained professionals. There's no way we're quacks."
The old lady shot back, "Then look at my son! He came here for his allergies the day before yesterday, took your medicine for three days, and then just passed out!
"He's my only son! If anything happens to him, what am I supposed to do?"
She was a tiny old woman, dressed in black, which made her look even more frail and delicate.
Her eyes kept darting around, making Sally frown.
Sally thought, 'This act is way too dramatic, right?'
After the men set Casey down, they all glared at Sally and Carlos, their faces full of anger.
Sally quickly stepped forward, crouched down, and checked Casey's condition.
His allergic reaction was extremely severe. It was way worse than when he first came in.
"He didn't just faint. He's in shock," Sally said seriously, looking at the old lady. "Did he ignore my instructions and eat something like shellfish? I told him not to touch that stuff, didn't I?"
"My son hasn't had any shellfish these past few days! He's been eating super plain, just the cereal I made and your medicine. Clearly, there's something wrong with your medicine!" the old lady insisted.
She was dead set on blaming Sally and Carlos, her eyes full of fierce accusations.
Carlos shot back, "This is obviously from eating shellfish!"
The old lady insisted, "I told you, he didn't! You quacks just refuse to believe me!
"I'm calling the police! I'm going to sue you!"
She immediately started making a scene, cursing and grumbling as she reached for her phone.
"Oh, my gosh! What if they are really quacks?"
"But I actually think the medicine they gave me works pretty well. I've taken it a few times and never had any issues."
"Maybe the side effects just haven't shown up yet?"
"Don't scare me like that! My heart can't handle it."
The anxious chatter from the other patients suddenly reached Sally's ears.
She looked up and, by chance, locked eyes with someone familiar in the crowd.
It was Amy, Abigail's aunt.
Right now, she was standing among the onlookers, quietly watching everything unfold.
Sally said seriously, "The patient's in critical condition. We need to treat him immediately. If the shock continues, his life will be at risk!"
