Sally found it increasingly ridiculous watching him defend Lena.
"Sally!"
Just then, a small, sweet voice broke Sally's train of thought. She looked over and saw Lillian running towards her, a bright smile on her face.
Sally had no intention of paying the man beside her any mind and turned to the child, her eyes filled with affection.
Brad didn't miss the change in Sally's expression.
A hint of displeasure flickered in his eyes. 'So, the kid *can* smile, huh?' he remarked.
Hearing his voice, Lillian looked alarmed and ducked behind Sally.
"Don't worry, Lillian," Sally said, "I'll take you away from here."
She shot Brad a glare and quickly led the child towards the roadside.
Lillian couldn't help but speed up.
Brad watched them go, a mix of annoyance and amusement on his face.
'Just how scared of me is she?' he thought. 'Jaxon's usually even colder than I am, isn't he?'
Sally had planned to check out some used car dealerships for a runaround tonight, but after everything that had happened, she'd lost all interest. She took Lillian home early and started making dinner.
Abigail finished work relatively early too and got home just as Sally was finishing up dinner.
"I didn't think you'd be back yet!" Abigail exclaimed, then noticed the table full of food and frowned slightly. "Didn't expect you to be earlier than me. And you've already made dinner?"
"Well, they say when you're feeling down, a good meal helps," Sally replied seriously, pulling out a chair. "Feed the stomach to heal the heart, or something like that. A full belly makes for a better mood."
"Sounds like today really got to you, huh?" Abigail said, her eyes turning a bit cold as she sat down opposite Sally."Sounds like today really got to you, huh?"
Sally put some food on Lillian's plate, then looked up at Abigail. "It's over now."
"You're not just going to let it go, are you?" Abigail asked, looking anxious. "Aren't you going to fight back? That bitch Lena was behind this, I know it. We don't even need to investigate. You can't just let her walk all over you!"
"Oh, payback's coming," Sally said. "Just not right now."
"Then when?" Abigail asked.
Sally calmly replied to Abigail's pressing question, "When the time is right, I'll make my move."
"Three years ago, you went through hell because of that woman. You're out now, and she's still coming after you! How can you stand it?" Abigail's grip on her chopsticks tightened.
"Whether I can stand it or not, I have to for now," Sally said, then continued, looking up, "Elise was the one who acted this time. Even if I investigate, I probably won't find anything linking it to Lena. That woman is incredibly cunning; she's probably covered her tracks completely. Even if I did find proof, what could I do to her in my current situation? I can't exactly hold a knife to her throat, can I?"
At these words, Abigail's expression darkened.
"Even if I managed to get her arrested, Brad would have her out in less than an hour, believe me," Sally said, her tone light, but her lips curved into a sarcastic smile.
When Abigail met her gaze, she saw something unreadable hidden in Sally's eyes.
"But we can't just let this slide... " Abigail trailed off.
"Of course not," Sally said calmly. "I've already asked Jaxon's assistant, Caleb, to get Casey to write an apology letter himself. We'll post it on the clinic door for everyone to see."
Abigail asked curiously, "Will that do any good?"
"It's better than doing nothing," Sally said, placing some food in Abigail's bowl. "And a little controversy isn't necessarily a bad thing."
Abigail's frown deepened. "How so?"
"Controversy makes people want to find out the truth for themselves. Those who want to verify it will naturally come for a consultation." Sally replied.
"That actually makes sense." Abigail agreed.
Sally smiled faintly. "We'll see after we post the apology letter tomorrow."
Abigail nodded quickly. "Okay."
After Sally gave Lillian her bath and told her a bedtime story, it was already past nine in the evening.
Her phone pinged. A text message popped up on her screen.
She glanced at it, her brow furrowing slightly when she saw the sender's name.
It was from Jaxon.
She swiped to open it, and the message appeared-
"Come outside. I have something for you."
Sally's gaze instinctively went to the front door, and her heart skipped a beat for some reason. Curious, she walked quickly to the door.
As soon as she opened it, she saw Jaxon's Maybach parked right outside. The engine was still running. He was in the driver's seat, and through the open passenger window, his eyes met hers as she stepped out.
Sally quickened her pace, and when she reached the car, he said, "Get in."
She did as he said, opened the passenger door, and slid in. "Mr. Zale, what did you want to give me?"
Jaxon lifted his striking eyes and gave her a cool glance. After a moment, his long fingers held out a piece of paper to Sally. "What you asked for."
Her eyes instinctively fell on the paper. It only took a second for her to guess what it was.
"Why are you delivering this?" Sally asked, taking the paper, a hint of apology in her expression. "Was Caleb busy?"
She had clearly asked Caleb to handle this, but Jaxon had brought it himself.
"Caleb probably had a date tonight," Jaxon said, his hand on the steering wheel, "so he asked me to drop it off."
At his words, Sally's hand, holding the letter, paused. Then, she smiled faintly. "So, does that mean you don't have a date tonight, Mr. Zale?"
He had one hand on the steering wheel, his tone casual. "No woman, no date."
Sally's lips curved into a small smile, and she looked down at the handwritten letter. The letter was essentially Casey confessing to setting up the clinic, along with a sincere apology to Sally.
Just then, a hand suddenly cupped her chin. Before she could react, Jaxon tilted her face up.
As their eyes met, she froze for a moment.
His intense eyes were unreadable in the dim light.
His voice was deep. "You find it funny that I said I don't have a woman?"
"No!" Sally shook her head immediately. "Why would I laugh at you, Mr. Zale? You must just have very high standards. Haven't met anyone you like yet, choosing quality over quantity... "
"How do you know I don't like someone?" Jaxon smiled.
Sally's eyelashes fluttered. 'So, he does like someone?' she thought.
For some reason, hearing this news, a soft spot in her heart seemed to sink.
"Oh? So you do have someone you like, Mr. Zale," Sally said, her tone serious. "Then why haven't you married her? Or at least started dating her?"

        "Sally!"
