Sally instinctively leaned away. The man's hand on her chin was forced to release its grip.
Jaxon glanced at his empty hand, then lowered it.
His tone was icy. "She's married."
A shiver went down Sally's spine.
'Into married women?'
'Well, that's quite the bombshell... '
"You really can't tell!" Sally forced a smile, trying to hide her turmoil and nerves. "That's a shame, then."
"Nothing to be ashamed about," Jaxon said, enunciating each word. "So what if she's married? It's just a piece of paper. It can't tie two people together for life. People get divorced, after all. Aren't you and my nephew getting divorced too?"
Sally stared at him, shocked and speechless.
This was the first she'd heard about Jaxon's love life, and she never imagined these were his actual views...
She'd once wondered if he could be a good ally.
But he already had someone in his heart.
A wave of disappointment inexplicably washed over Sally.
She didn't want to linger. After a slight nod, she reached for the door handle to get out.
But suddenly, he grabbed her wrist.
Sally instinctively turned her head back, just as Jaxon leaned in.
Their lips were inches apart.
Sally's heart leaped into her throat, and the hand clutching the letter trembled slightly.
When she looked up, his eyes, magnified, filled her vision. His thick lashes fluttered.
They were so close she could feel his steady breath.
Sally tried to pull back, but she'd barely moved an inch when his large hand slid from her wrist to the nape of her neck.
"Mr. Zale, you... "
Sally's heart was pounding wildly.
The last two times they'd been this close, she hadn't been fully conscious. Once at the scene of the fire, and another time when she was drunk.
But now, Sally was completely sober, and the tension was palpable.
After all, this was Jaxon Zale...
"Mrs. Zale," Jaxon said, creating a little space between them, though his hand lingered on the back of her neck, his thumb caressing her skin in a deliberate, yet seemingly casual touch, "I did you a big favor yesterday. Aren't you going to treat me to dinner?"
The air crackled with an unspoken intimacy.
"Of course," Sally said, fighting to keep her composure. "When you're free, Mr. Zale, just text me. I'll definitely take you out."
He nodded, satisfied. "Good."
"Mr. Zale." Sally reached out and gently tapped his arm. "Your hand... "
Jaxon's gaze fell to her hand on his arm. A faint smile touched his lips. "What's wrong? Worried my nephew's spies are watching?"
"We might have had a... close encounter, but that was an accident," Sally said, meeting his gaze with a polite smile. "Besides, Mr. Zale, since you have someone you're interested in, we should keep our distance."
Jaxon reached out and lightly brushed his thumb across her lips. "I told you before, if necessary, I don't mind playing along with you. My nephew is out of control and needs to be taken down a notch."
Sally swallowed hard. 'Anyone but Mr. Zale.'
"What difference does it make who you choose?" Jaxon gently pressed her lower lip, his eyes fixed on hers. "If you choose me, Mrs. Zale, the chances of driving my nephew crazy are higher than with anyone else."
For the first time, Sally saw a wild streak in him.
"Why help me, Mr. Zale? You clearly have someone you like…" Sally asked.
"We're family. I can't stand to see you being wronged." A smirk played on Jaxon's lips. "Is that reason good enough for you?"
"I don't have any plans to deal with him right now. Thank you, Mr. Zale." Sally quickly pulled away from him and opened the car door.
Before he could respond, she hurried out.
Jaxon watched her go, a slight smile playing on his lips. 'She gets flustered so easily.'
Sally rushed into the house, closed the door, and leaned against it. The hand holding the letter was pressed to her chest, which was rising and falling rapidly.
"What's with you? You look like you've seen a ghost, all worked up like that," Abigail said, having heard the commotion and poking her head out of her room to look down at Sally by the front door.
Already on edge, Sally jumped when she heard Abigail's sudden voice.
"Don't joke around," Sally snapped, glaring at her. "Go to bed."
Abigail's grin widened. "What happened? Did your ex-husband try to force a kiss on you?"
Sally shot her a look. "I'd rather see a ghost, seriously... "
"If Brad heard you say that, you think he'd come charging in here with a giant knife?" Abigail leaned against the second-floor railing, laughing without restraint.
Sally deadpanned, "Our doorway isn't two meters wide. His knife wouldn't fit."
Abigail was overcome with laughter, then turned and went back into her room. "Get some rest! It's late."
Sally mumbled an "Mm-hmm" and quickly headed to the bathroom.
After a shower, she finally started to calm down.
She never imagined she'd get so entangled with Brad's uncle, much less that Jaxon would offer to team up with her, just to mess with Brad.
It was actually a golden opportunity. But there was no denying it, she'd chickened out...
More accurately, she was a little scared of getting too close to him.
She had a nagging feeling that there was much more to him than met the eye.
The next day, the fourth day since the clinic opened, Sally arrived and decisively posted the letter. It immediately drew a crowd of onlookers from passersby.
Some patients also gathered, shaking their heads as they read the letter's contents.
"So, this was all a deliberate setup?" one person muttered.
"This Dr. Smith is amazing, don't let yesterday's incident fool you. Her skills are top-notch in Westmere," another chimed in.
"I heard she's like a miracle worker, is that true?" asked a curious voice.
"Miracle worker? You're exaggerating."
"If you don't believe it, go in and see for yourself... " The crowd continued to buzz with conversation.
Sally sat at her consultation desk, listening to their chatter, a smile playing on her lips.
It seemed her plan was working. Even if they weren't here for her medical skills, she had successfully piqued their curiosity. Even people who weren't sick wanted to come in and see her.
Carlos, seeing even more customers than the previous day, looked surprised. "Sally, your tactic is brilliant! You really know how to get people's attention!"
