Sally smirked, a smile playing on her lips. "So, have we turned the tables?"
"You bet we have!" Carlos nodded quickly. "It's just like that saying."
Sally looked up, curious. "Which saying?"
Carlos said seriously, "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger."
As he finished speaking, he gave Sally a thumbs-up.
Sally tapped the desk with her pen. "A patient's here."
"Got it." Carlos quickly headed to the front desk. "I'm on it."
Just then, Sally's phone rang. She instinctively glanced down and saw it was Brad's mother, Lauren, calling.
After a few seconds of hesitation, she stood up and answered the call.
Lauren's voice came through the phone. "Today's the day for Grandpa Howard's follow-up appointment. You haven't forgotten, have you?"
Sally's hand, holding the phone, suddenly froze.
So much had happened at the clinic recently, she'd actually forgotten all about it.
Howard was currently in recovery and needed a check-up every other week.
Normally, she wouldn't have been obligated, but she'd made a deal with Jaxon last time they had dinner. She would treat Howard, and Jaxon would help her get back Willow Haven, the property her own grandfather had left her.
Besides, she was genuinely worried about Howard's health and felt she should do the follow-up.
"Okay, I understand," Sally replied softly, planning to go over in the evening.
They didn't talk much longer, both hanging up with a silent understanding.
Although Lauren didn't meddle much in her relationship with Brad, Sally knew very well that in the entire Zale family, only Howard had genuinely cared for her.
She had never forgotten that kindness.
Today's patients were numerous, but their issues weren't serious. When things quieted down in the evening, she closed up shop and headed to the Zale family's old mansion.
Sally had just stepped through the main gate when she saw two figures by the covered walkway.
Lena and Brad were sitting in the courtyard gazebo. Brad was gently tucking a few strands of Lena's blonde hair behind her ear. Lena, in turn, reached out and placed her hand on the back of his. Their eyes met, full of affection.
If Sally had seen this three years ago, she would have gone home, buried herself under the covers, and cried her eyes out. She would have cursed Brad for being a heartless, two-timing bastard.
But now, she had only one reaction.
She felt like throwing up.
Sally glanced at their son, Nick, who was looking at flowers nearby, and her expression instantly darkened.
"Don't you have rooms in the house? How dare you do this in front of the child!" Sally's voice was loud, sharply interrupting their tender moment.
Brad looked up at the sound of her voice and saw Sally, who had appeared at the entrance.
Lena quickly pulled her hand back and stood up from the gazebo bench.
Sally and Brad weren't officially divorced yet, which made Lena, at best, the other woman—one who couldn't even be acknowledged publicly.
Maybe not even that.
After all, Brad had never openly admitted to any relationship with her.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Brad's face darkened. He shot a look in Nick's direction, then quickly turned back to Sally. "You know the kid's right there, and you still spout such nonsense?"
"Nonsense?" Sally strode towards them. "Why don't you two take a good look at what you're doing?"
"Mrs. Zale, are you jealous? Brad and I weren't doing anything, really... " Lena said, her voice laced with a hint of grievance, her blue eyes wide.
"Oh really? So I guess it only counts if I catch you two screwing?" Sally deliberately lowered her voice, her eyes filled with cold indifference.
"Sally! Watch your mouth!" Brad's expression turned frigid.
A cold smile touched Sally's lips, the chill in her eyes deepening.
"Mommy! Stop bullying Lena and Daddy!"
Just then, a child's voice suddenly cut into their argument.
Sally looked up to see her son, Nick, who had run over. He stood protectively in front of Brad and Lena, his small arms spread wide, looking up at Sally with a serious expression.
The wariness in his eyes hit Sally hard, and the air around her seemed to turn icy.
'If it weren't for Nick,' Sally thought bitterly, 'I wouldn't have given them a second glance even if they were making out right here!'
Sally ignored them and turned, walking directly towards the main entrance of the villa.
"Daddy, is Mommy trying to bully Lena again?" Nick's questioning voice came from behind her.
Sally didn't even pause.
'Out of sight, out of mind,' she told herself.
When she reached the living room, Howard was sitting inside, watching the news.
Seeing Sally, he beamed. "I knew you'd come today!"
Sally offered a calm smile. "Grandpa Howard, how have you been feeling lately? Has your breathing gotten any better?"
"Much better," Howard said with a nod, his face full of warmth.
Sally reached for Howard's wrist. "Let me take your pulse then."
"Alright." Howard nodded.
While checking his pulse, Howard said casually, "Stay for dinner tonight, okay? Brad and Nick are here, and Jaxon will probably be back later. It's been a while since we all gathered."
Sally's eyelashes fluttered when she heard Jaxon would be back.
But the thought of Lena Yasmin also being there made Sally decisively refuse. "No, thank you, Howard. My friend has already made dinner at home. I'll head back later."
"You rarely visit. Just listen to me and stay." Howard said.
Sally looked up, meeting Howard's gaze, and found it hard to refuse his hospitality. She nodded. "Okay."
Sally performed acupuncture on two of Howard's pressure points. By the time she finished, dinner wasn't ready yet, so she decided to go out for some fresh air.
As she reached the doorway, she saw a familiar figure at the end of the hallway.
Lena was on the phone and turned around just in time to meet Sally's eyes.
Seeing Lena hang up, Sally walked over to her quickly.
"Mrs. Zale." Without Brad around, Lena's expression was less gentle, with an added touch of disdain.
"I've been meaning to find you. Didn't expect to run into you here," Sally said, her tone mild and her face impassive.
"Why would Mrs. Zale be looking for me?" Lena's voice was cool. "Given our relationship, I don't think we're close enough to be seeking each other out, are we?"
Sally didn't intend to waste words with her and got straight to the point. "Did you put Elise up to messing with my clinic?"
