At the clinic.
Sally was swamped with patients.
Her phone, tucked away in a drawer, kept buzzing, but she didn't have a second to check it.
Carlos had called in sick first thing in the morning, running a high fever and needing at least half a day off.
The clinic had just opened, and these first few days were predictably busy, so she'd come in early to get a head start.
Just before noon, Carlos dragged himself into the clinic, looking exhausted.
Sally looked up, surprised. "Carlos, it's not even the afternoon yet! What are you doing here?"
"I couldn't leave you to handle all the patients alone, so I came in early." Carlos said.
"Are you sure you're up to it?" Sally studied his worn face, a flicker of concern in her eyes.
"No problem. I took some medicine and I'm feeling much better now." Carlos put on his white coat and quickly got to work.
It wasn't until her lunch break that Sally noticed the missed call from Jaxon from earlier that morning.
She was about to call Jaxon back when her second number rang – an unfamiliar number.
Sally answered. It was an old client wanting her to repair some crystalware.
Sally discussed the details with him, and the thought of Jaxon's missed call completely slipped her mind.
In the afternoon, the client delivered the crystalware to Abigail. After receiving it, Abigail sent a photo to Sally.
Since Sally preferred to keep a low profile, many of her crystalware clients dealt with her through Abigail.
They'd had this arrangement for years, so many clients had never actually met Sally in person.
Sally finished work at eight in the evening.
She had just locked up the clinic when she saw a familiar figure standing by a Maybach.
Her gaze fell on the man's face, and she froze for a moment. Her mind flooded with images of their kiss from the night before.
She remained rooted to the spot as Jaxon strode over to her. "I called you this morning. Why didn't you pick up?"
His voice snapped Sally out of her thoughts. Only then did she remember his call.
"Today was crazy busy, and then something came up. I forgot to call you back." Sally tried to sound casual, but her heart was pounding.
"About last night... "
Before Jaxon could finish, she cut him off. "Mr. Zale, I said last night we should pretend it never happened."
As she spoke, the look in Jaxon's eyes grew complicated. His striking eyes seemed even more unreadable in the dim light.
"Don't you want a divorce?" Jaxon asked.
"I do, but not like this. Especially not with you... " She trailed off, her gaze dropping to the ground.
The warm glow of the streetlights outside the clinic illuminated her face, her long lashes casting soft shadows on her lower eyelids.
He suddenly stepped closer, narrowing the distance between them.
"He can go see that woman in the middle of the night, so why can't you do something?" Jaxon gently lifted her chin, his expression serious. "This might make Howard's blood pressure skyrocket, but it's the fastest way to get your divorce."
"Even if I were to get a divorce that way, it absolutely can't be with you." Sally lifted her expressive eyes to meet his, speaking each word deliberately. "I don't want your reputation ruined because of me, Mr. Zale."
Jaxon watched her quietly, his gaze drifting to her lips.
A faint smile played on his lips as he looked back into her eyes. "What if I said I don't mind?"
Sally's heart leaped wildly. A wave of unease washed over her.
She thought for a moment, then said without hesitation, "Mr. Zale, since you already have someone you care about, please don't get involved in this mess. It'll only drag you down. I can handle my own problems."
She instinctively stepped back and, without waiting for his reply, quickly turned and walked away.
She had actually considered Jaxon as a way out before, thinking it wouldn't be such a bad thing. That's why she hadn't kept her distance from him initially.
But he had clearly said that day that he already had someone he was interested in. What if this really got out? How would they face each other then?
Before her divorce, she wouldn't dare let anything intimate between them see the light of day.
Rumors can be savage. She knew that all too well.
Before she went to prison, she was nearly drowned in gossip. She didn't want to go through that again.
When Sally got home, she saw a figure standing at her door from a distance. It was Abigail, holding a piece of crystalware, about to unlock the door.
"What took you so long?" Sally walked over curiously and took the crystalware from her. It was the piece from today's client.
"I left this at the office when I came home from work today. After Lillian fell asleep, I went back to get it."
Sally was a little surprised. "She's asleep this early today?"
"Yeah! She had gym class this afternoon – running and playing some sports. She came back and told me how much fun she had... " Abigail opened the door, stepped inside, changed her shoes, and looked at Sally with a growing smile.
A slight smile touched Sally's lips. "That's great news! As long as she stays happy and interacts more with her classmates, her autism should gradually improve."
"Exactly! She's been talking a lot more fluently lately." Abigail nodded.
Sally placed the crystalware on the table just as her phone, in her bag, started to ring.
She took out her phone and glanced down, recognizing the number on the screen.
When she saw that string of digits, her hand holding the phone paused ever so slightly.
It was her second number. Jaxon's.
Looks like Jaxon hasn't given up trying to reach her.
She suddenly remembered what Caleb had said – that Jaxon had a very important piece of crystalware that was broken.
Was that crystalware really so important to him? Could it be a gift from the person he cared about?
"What's wrong?" Abigail asked, curious about her reaction. "Did something happen?"
Abigail's question broke Sally from her thoughts. She looked up. "No, it's just Jaxon. He somehow got my second number. Apparently, he has some crystalware he wants repaired."
"So why don't you just fix it for him?"
As Abigail finished speaking, the ringing stopped.
Sally looked up, then shook her head, her tone light. "I'm not ready for him to know about all my different... roles yet."
"Juggling so many things can't be easy," Abigail said with a slight smile. "So, when are you planning to take his job? You're not thinking of turning him down, are you?"
