"We'll see," Sally said lightly, heading upstairs.
"What do you mean, 'we'll see'?" Abigail couldn't help but laugh. "If Jaxon heard that, he'd probably have a fit. He's been trying to reach you repeatedly, so it must be something important he needs fixed... "
Sally stopped and looked back at her. "It probably is really important. Maybe a gift from someone he's into."
"Someone he's into?" Abigail followed her, a little surprised. "Lillian's godfather has a crush on someone?"
"Yeah," Sally continued upstairs, her voice heavy. "He told me himself. And she's married."
"Married?" Abigail was shocked. "Wow, that's some serious drama!"
Images of their kiss from last night flooded Sally's mind, leaving her a mess of emotions.
"Maybe it's someone he used to like, and she ended up marrying someone else... " Abigail gossiped. "But that doesn't make sense! Jaxon is gorgeous, has an amazing body—top-tier among guys—and his career is booming. A guy like that should be able to get anyone he wants."
Sally stopped again. Her hand was on her bedroom doorknob.
After a moment's thought, she looked back at Abigail. "When did you become such a gossip, like Carlos?"
"I'm not gossiping, I just find it strange. With Jaxon's status, he could have anyone, not just a married woman. He could even marry an eighteen-year-old and no one would bat an eye." Abigail said.
"If you're so curious, why don't you go ask him?" Sally looked at her seriously, her expression darkening for a moment.
"Why would I ask about that? I'm not interested in him... " Abigail frowned at her. "But when I bring it up, why do you seem so impatient?"
"I'm not impatient," Sally said, softening her tone. "Maybe I'm just tired today. Don't mind me."
'Thinking back,' she mused, 'my tone had been less gentle than usual, more on edge.'
"It's okay. If you're tired, take a shower and get some rest." Abigail said.
"Okay." Sally nodded and went into her bedroom.
Ding-
Her phone lit up with a text message; it was from her second number.
After swiping the screen open, Sally looked down at the words, her brow furrowing again.
"Ms. Hazel, sorry to bother you. I've tried calling several times, but you didn't pick up, so I'm trying this way.
"I have a very important crystal pendant that's broken and needs urgent repair. Name your price, just please fix it as soon as possible."
Sally stared at the text, her thoughts even more jumbled.
'Things at the clinic were still hectic, and I just took on a new commission this afternoon. I probably can't take on anything else for a while; I simply don't have the time.'
'Besides, a crystal pendant is tiny, the craftsmanship intricate, making it incredibly difficult to repair. It would take at least a couple of weeks.'
'And I really don't want to get too involved with him right now.'
Sally thought for a moment, then quickly typed a reply to Jaxon.
Ding-
Jaxon's phone buzzed with a notification. He had been gazing out the window, but his eyes instinctively dropped to his phone screen.
"I'm very sorry, my voice has been hoarse lately, so I haven't been able to take calls. Due to personal reasons, I'm unable to accept commissions at the moment. Please understand."
"Mr. Zale, did Hazel text back?" Caleb, who was driving, glanced in the rearview mirror at the man in the back seat, his own brow furrowing for a second.
Jaxon kept his voice low. "Yeah."
"So, what did she say? Did she agree?" Caleb's eyes lit up with visible anticipation, his voice full of hope.
"No," Jaxon replied, his tone cool. "She said she can't take any commissions right now due to personal reasons."
"No way! Is this Hazel really that difficult? Everyone in the business says she's easy to work with. This isn't what I heard." Caleb said.
Jaxon turned off his phone screen, his voice even lower. "Keep looking while we wait. Don't put all our eggs in one basket."
"Understood, Mr. Zale." Caleb's grip on the steering wheel tightened for a moment. "I'll try asking around again later."
"Mm." Jaxon leaned back against the seat and said no more.
"Mr. Zale," Caleb said, looking in the rearview mirror again, his voice much quieter. "There's something I need to report to you."
"Go on." Jaxon's eyes were still closed, his voice exceptionally detached.
"Sienna Ford's execution is in three days... " Caleb didn't say the last word, instead asking, "Are you going to see her?"
Jaxon slowly opened his eyes but remained silent.
Caleb continued. "Miss Harper arrives in Westmere tomorrow. She couldn't reach you, so she called me. She said she's planning to see Sienna the day after tomorrow, to say her final goodbye, and wanted to know if you'd like to go with her."
Jaxon's eyes were incredibly dark as he stared out the window.
Kendall Harper was Jaxon's childhood friend. She had moved to Korven with her mother, who remarried, ten years ago. Two years ago, Kendall married a Korvenian sports star and rarely returned to Westmere.
In the early years, when Jaxon was starting his business overseas, they rarely had a chance to meet.
Sienna was Kendall's best friend. Before Sienna got married, Kendall often brought her over to hang out. Over time, Jaxon and Sienna became friends too.
In three days, Sienna Ford would be leaving this world. It made sense for Kendall to come back.
"Mr. Zale?" Caleb's voice came again from the driver's seat.
Jaxon's thoughts were interrupted. He pulled his gaze back and glanced at Caleb. His tone was utterly indifferent. "Reply to her. Tell her to meet me at Longbay the day after tomorrow. I'll go with her."
"Yes, Mr. Zale." Caleb replied.
The next day was the weekend, and the clinic was busier with patients.
Sally was swamped when she got a call from Abigail.
"Sally, that inmate you were close to, Sienna... her execution is in two days... " Abigail paused for a moment, then continued, "Are you going to take Lillian to see her one last time?"
The news hit Sally like a ton of bricks. Her eyes widened in shock.
Abigail, being a journalist, had a sharp nose for news. The reason she got the information so quickly was that Sally had asked her to keep an eye on Sienna's situation.
She knew this day would come, but she hadn't expected it so soon. A pang of sorrow struck her at the thought of little Lillian losing her mother.
"Sally, are you listening?" Abigail's sudden question broke through Sally's thoughts.
Sally's expression grew somber. "Can you help me arrange a visit with her tomorrow? I still want to take Lillian to see her mother."
