"Sure thing," Abigail replied quickly. "I'll see what I can do."
"Thanks, Abigail." Sally owed her big time for this.
'I'll have to treat Abigail to a nice dinner once this is all sorted,' Sally thought.
"That's what friends are for," Abigail said, her tone serious. "No need to thank me."
After Sally hung up, Carlos approached her. "Sally, there's a patient scheduled for a follow-up tomorrow morning... "
Carlos didn't even finish before Sally cut him off. "I have something really important to take care of tomorrow. You might have to manage the clinic on your own. If it's too much, we can close for the day."
"I can handle it, no need to close." Carlos noticed she looked distressed. "Did something happen? You don't look so good."
"Yeah, something's come up." Sally got up from her chair. "Could you check on the patients for a bit? I need to use the restroom."
"Okay." Carlos nodded.
As Sally stood, her legs suddenly felt weak, and she stumbled.
Carlos quickly reached out and steadied her arm, his voice laced with concern. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine... " Sally quickly pulled her arm away and hurried to the restroom.
She stood at the sink, gripping its edges, her gaze fixed on the basin. Her shoulders trembled slightly from the emotional turmoil.
She turned on the faucet, and as the water rushed down, a large tear escaped her eye, mingling with the stream and disappearing down the drain.
She didn't know all the details of Sienna's case, only that her husband had been having an affair, and Sienna had... well, done something to the other woman. It was a nasty situation.
But Sally always felt Sienna was a kind person at heart, just dealt a bad hand with a gambling, womanizing husband.
She'd heard that before the Ford family's fortunes declined, Sienna had been quite well-off. Then she loved the wrong man, one mistake led to another, and her life went off the rails.
"Where's Sally?" A deep, resonant voice suddenly boomed from the clinic's reception area.
It was loud enough for Sally, still in the restroom, to hear. She recognized the voice instantly.
Just as Sally was about to open the door, she heard Carlos's annoyed reply, "Sally's in the restroom. If you need her, you can wait in the seating area."
Then she heard the man's heavy footsteps striding towards it.
She quickly wiped her tears, her expression hardening. Composing herself, she opened the door and walked out.
Carlos gestured towards the waiting area. "Sally, he's here."
Sally nodded knowingly. Neither had said his name, but it was an unspoken understanding.
When she entered the waiting area, she saw Brad sitting on the sofa, legs crossed, his arm resting on the back.
The tension around him was thick. He looked up as she approached, his sharp eyes giving her a cold, assessing look.
"What are you doing here?" Sally closed the door behind her and sat on the sofa opposite him.
"What do you think? I'm here for an explanation, obviously." Brad's brow furrowed, his voice tight with displeasure. "It's been days since what happened at the Zale estate, and you still haven't given me a proper answer. Don't I deserve one?"
A humorless laugh escaped Sally. 'I can't believe this jerk is still harping on about that,' she thought.
"I already told you, she insulted me first. That's why I slapped her." Sally didn't beat around the bush. "And even though I haven't looked into it, I know she was involved in trying to sabotage my clinic!"
His fists clenched, his face a mask of annoyance. "You're really going to keep dwelling on this?"
Sally scoffed. "Aren't you the one who won't let it go? I wasn't even planning to get back at her for scheming against me, and you're already this worked up, Mr. Zale. What would you do if I actually did fight back? Hold a knife to my throat?"
"Wasn't slapping her enough? What more do you want to do?" Brad frowned.
"Of course, it's not enough!" Sally's voice rose. "They tried to ruin me on my opening day! Can they even comprehend the damage they caused my clinic? This isn't some child's play; people's health is at stake!"
"Elise was behind it, yes, but that's her. Lena is Lena. Don't lump them together!" Brad shouted.
"Is that all you came here to say?" Sally ignored his point and stood up.
"I told you, if you apologize to Lena, I'll drop it." Brad also stood, his expression icy as he stared her down. The corners of his eyes were bloodshot.
A dangerous smile played on Sally's lips. "You want me to apologize?"
Brad stated bluntly, "Yes!"
The smile didn't leave Sally's lips. She enunciated each word clearly, "In. Your. Dreams."
At her words, the air around Brad grew frigid.
"Sally, you... " His voice trailed off, choked with anger.
"Please leave now. Don't keep me from my patients." Sally pointed towards the door, her eyes glinting with frost.
Brad's chest heaved with anger, but he was too furious to speak.
He strode towards the exit. Just as he reached the door, Sally's voice cut through the silence from behind him, "About what happened that day—I hope this is the last time we discuss it. If you bring it up again, Mr. Zale, I don't mind escalating things with her. We can take this all the way, even if it means mutual destruction!"
Brad stopped dead in his tracks. He turned back to look at her, and Sally's gaze was even colder than before.
'When had she started standing up to him like this?' he wondered. 'She used to be so gentle, so accommodating. If I said east, she'd never go west... '
The man left, slamming the door behind him. The loud bang echoed through the clinic.
When Sally opened the door to the waiting area again, Brad was gone from the reception area.
Carlos glanced in the direction Brad had left, then back at Sally. Seeing a lull in patients, he walked over to her.
He stopped in front of her, asking with concern, "Sally, he didn't... do anything to you, did he?"
Sally looked away from the door and at Carlos beside her. "No," she said calmly.
Carlos thought for a moment, then pressed, "Did you two have a fight just now? Your eyes look a little red."
