She glanced down. When she saw the caller ID, she froze for a second.
It was Brad.
The man beside her, Jaxon, naturally saw the name on the screen too. His eyes darkened.
Sally pushed the car door open, answered the call, and strode up the steps into the house.
He let out a deep breath, his expression complicated.
Once Sally was home, Brad told her why he'd called.
"Grandpa Howard's birthday is the day after tomorrow. My eldest uncle and my dad have decided to throw a big party for him, sort of to boost his spirits and luck. You need to be there." Brad stated.
"Got it," Sally said, her tone flat, her expression unreadable.
"A lot of the rich kids in Westmere know you did time," Brad said, his voice laced with a warning. "So when you show up, you better be on your best behavior. Don't do anything to embarrass me, got it?"
His words made her smirk. "If you're so worried I'll embarrass you, why bother calling? Why not just tell me not to come?"
"My mom, Lauren, said you have to be there. You're Grandpa Howard's primary doctor now, and with such a big event, she's worried something might happen to him," Brad retorted, clearly annoyed. "It's not like *I* want you there, understand?"
"Jaxon already talked to me about it. I agreed to go because *he* asked. Not because of your call. Do *you* understand?" Sally's tone was even colder than his.
Brad's voice rose. "Why are you suddenly so close to Jaxon? Don't tell me it's just because of Lillian! Stop using that as an excuse."
"It's not an excuse. It's the truth." Sally, thoroughly annoyed, hung up.
She'd barely hung up when the front door opened. Abigail was back.
"Sally, Jaxon's here. His car has been parked out front this whole time," Abigail said, pointing towards the door. "Is he here for you? Are you going to go out?"
Sally paused. 'He hasn't left yet? Is he worried about Lillian?' she wondered.
"I already saw him when I came in. He's probably just worried about the kid and stuck around. He'll likely leave soon." Sally headed towards the kitchen. "After all, today's the anniversary of Sienna Ford's death. It's normal for him to be concerned about her daughter."
Abigail nodded thoughtfully. "You know, Jaxon is actually a pretty good guy."
"Oh really?" Sally glanced back at her. "What's so good about him?"
"Everything!" Abigail started counting on her fingers. "He's good-looking, comes from a good family, successful career... He might seem a bit cold, but I bet he's a real softie underneath. And as for his body... "
Suddenly, she stopped and just stared at Sally.
Sally was about to start prepping vegetables, but Abigail's stare made her pause. "What are you looking at me for?"
"Honestly, you're around him so much. Have you, you know... checked him out?" Abigail grinned at her. "What's his physique like? Impressive?"
"Why are you asking me? How would I know what his body is like?" Sally protested.
But then, an image of them kissing flashed in her mind.
The first two times they'd been intimate, her memory was hazy. But the third time, she'd been fully aware—that solid, muscular chest was still a vivid picture in her head.
She quickly shook her head, trying to banish the thought.
"What's with the headshake? Does that mean you *have* seen it? And it's... not good?" Abigail quickly covered her mouth with her hand, as if she'd stumbled upon a huge secret.
Just as Sally was about to respond, Abigail continued, "No wonder he's never had a girlfriend and isn't married! Could it be that he... you know... has issues in *that* department?"
Sally choked, coughing a few times.
Seeing her reaction, Abigail quickly patted her on the back. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Sally waved her hand, still holding the vegetables. "Don't go spreading rumors like that. You have no proof."
"Then why doesn't he have a girlfriend or get married? A guy his age, it's just not normal... " Abigail said.
"He's in love with someone, and she's already married." Sally turned to Abigail, her expression serious. "I've even met her. I saw the ring on her finger."
"No way! You've met her? What does she look like?" Abigail leaned in, her eyes wide with curiosity.
Sally glanced out the kitchen window, the woman's face appearing in her mind.
"Her name is Kendall Harper. She was Sienna's best friend." Sally looked down and continued prepping the vegetables. "She's gorgeous, really striking and vibrant."
"Oh, so that's his type! What a shame... " Abigail sighed.
"A shame about what?" Sally glanced at her, half-joking, half-serious. "Don't tell me *you've* got a crush on Jaxon?"
"Not me! I was just checking him out for *you*." Abigail said.
At that, Sally's hand, mid-vegetable prep, froze.
A faint blush crept up her face. "Are you kidding me? He's my ex-husband's uncle!"
"That's exactly why you should go for it!" Abigail reasoned, her eyes sparkling. "Think about it! He's never been married, a total bachelor, prime catch! And another thing—if you two get together, what would Brad have to call you?"
Sally's back went rigid for a moment.
"His aunt!" Abigail exclaimed excitedly. "His ex-wife becomes his aunt! Just thinking about it is thrilling, don't you think? I can just picture that scumbag Brad having to call you 'Aunt Sally.' How wild would that be?"
"Stop joking around." Sally couldn't bear to hear any more and gently pushed Abigail out of the kitchen. "Go wait outside. If Lillian wakes up, you can look after her."
"Why are you blushing?" Abigail pointed at Sally's face. "Seriously, is there actually something going on between you two? You're acting really suspicious!"
