Sally's face dropped the moment she caught Lena's reflection in the mirror. For a second, she actually wondered if Lena had drugged her.
Lena eyed Sally's neck with a sly grin. "Sally, where did you get those hickeys? Don't tell me you hooked up with some guy at the party last night. No wonder the door was locked when Brad and I knocked."
Sally whipped around and glared at Lena. "Cut it out. Don't start making stuff up."
Lena stepped up beside Sally, her fingers brushing Sally's hair aside as she leaned in to scrutinize the hickeys.
Lena's voice dripped with icy sarcasm as she sneered, "Care to explain these hickeys, Sally? Brad was with me all night yesterday—he went straight home after the party. These couldn't possibly be his doing, could they?"
Sally's hands abruptly clenched a little tighter. Her expression turned icy, her whole presence radiating an intimidating chill. "Were you behind what happened yesterday?" Sally swiftly spun around to face Lena.
A flicker of tension crossed Lena's face. Though she quickly schooled her expression, Sally didn't miss that fleeting moment of tension.
Sally's conviction grew even stronger—'There's no way Lena wasn't involved in what happened yesterday,' she thought.
Lena feigned confusion. "I'm not sure what you're talking about."
Sally's eyes burned with fury as she glared at Lena. "Someone spiked my drink yesterday. I only started feeling sick after I had it.
"It was either you or Elise. But since you showed up here first thing in the morning, I'd say the odds are in your favor."
Lena's brows furrowed abruptly. "I didn't do anything like that. Stop making baseless accusations. I already told you—I was just passing by and came in to check on you out of kindness."
"Come on, Lena, you're no saint. It'd be a miracle if you weren't plotting against me—so why would you suddenly show up to check on me?" Sally could feel the fury blazing even more intensely in her eyes.
Lena's voice rose sharply. "You keep accusing me—then show me the evidence. Making baseless accusations without any proof? Watch it, or I'll sue you for defamation."
"I'm going to keep digging into this. If I find out you've been pulling strings behind my back, do you really think I'll just put up with it like I did three years ago?" Sally warned. Her eyes burned with a dangerous fury.
Lena drawled, "Sally, what I'm really dying to know is—who exactly was the guy you slept with last night?"
As Sally looked up, she caught the mocking smirk in Lena's eyes. Sally didn't bother responding. Instead, she pointed sharply at the door and snapped, "Lena, get out. I'm starting work—don't stick around and get in my way."
Lena's smile deepened. "If you don't tell me, I'll just go tell Brad and let him dig into this for you." Without waiting for Sally to respond, Lena spun on her heel, flung the door open, and strode out without another word.
Sally spun around to face the mirror, her whole body shaking with rage. Her hands gripped the edges of the sink, her fingertips turning white from the force of her grip.
She thought, 'Looks like I can't keep this under wraps any longer. I took every precaution, but still got caught out in the end.'
Sally grabbed a silk scarf to completely cover the hickeys before seeing patients. The clinic was packed with patients all day, and Sally didn't get a break until late afternoon. That evening, Brad stormed in.
"Sir, may I ask—" Carlos's face darkened the instant he got a clear look at the man approaching, and whatever he was about to say died in his throat.
Brad scanned the clinic's reception area before fixing his gaze on Carlos. "Where's Sally?"
Carlos pointed to the treatment room. "She's inside, organizing the medical instruments."
Without a word, Brad strode purposefully toward the treatment room.
The door opening snapped Sally's attention. As Sally glanced back at the door, she found herself staring straight into Brad's icy glare.
A minute earlier, Jaxon had just called her to ask how Lillian was doing today. She was still on the phone when Brad barged into the treatment room.
The door slammed shut behind him with a loud thud—and he locked it. Brad marched across the room, snatched the phone right out of her hand, and slapped it face-down on the table.
Brad was so laser-focused on Sally that he didn't even realize the call was from Jaxon.
"What the hell are you doing? Give me back my phone." Sally lunged for her phone, desperate to hang up the call before anything else.
But Brad slammed his hand down on top of the phone and grabbed her arm tight with the other. "Who the hell was the guy you slept with last night?"
Sally tensed up right away. 'So Lena told him everything,' she thought.
"I didn't sleep with anyone," Sally responded curtly, without a hint of hesitation.
"Now I get why the door to our room was locked yesterday—you were screwing around with another guy." Brad perched on the edge of the desk, his legs slightly parted. In one swift motion, he yanked her in, trapping her firmly between his thighs.
"You take that back." Sally lifted her gaze, her expression icy as she glared at him.
Brad tore off her silk scarf—revealing the hickeys, some faint and some vivid, that instantly came into view. Sally never saw it coming—he suddenly yanked off her silk scarf, leaving her completely caught off guard.
"If you weren't fooling around, then explain these damn hickeys on your neck."
Sally's heart pounded in her chest as she caught the fierce, almost ruthless glint in Brad's eyes. 'It must be Lena stirring up trouble behind my back,' she thought. 'She probably didn't mention I was drugged—just told Brad I might have slept with someone else.'
Sally still had no idea what the person who drugged her was really after. The only thing she was sure of—the person behind this simply wanted Brad to find out.
'That makes Lena the prime suspect. Maybe she's just trying to stir things up behind the scenes so we end up getting divorced for good,' she thought.
Brad's hand shot out and clamped around Sally's neck, his grip tightening relentlessly. His voice dropped to a menacing growl. "Say something."
The way he looked right then—Sally couldn't stop the images of him and Lena flashing through her mind. And just like that, she felt this urge to mess with him a little.
"Huh?" A mocking smile played on her lips. "So, Mr. Zale, is this your famous 'rules for thee, not for me'?"
