Jaxon said, "I just overheard it by chance. How could I miss out on such an interesting show?"
With a cold smile playing on her lips, Sally said casually, "Who would've thought Mr. Zale could be so gossipy?"
"After I hung up, did Brad actually do anything?"
"Why do you care so much about what he did to me?" Sally turned to lock eyes with him, smirking. "Mr. Zale, could it be you actually have feelings for me?"
Jaxon let out a low, husky chuckle, then fell silent, his gaze lingering intently on her face.
That look on him, with that half-smile and no explanation, left Sally a little thrown. "I wasn't trying to read into it, but the way you've been acting lately—It's just been weird."
After hearing her words, Jaxon reached out and gently pinched her chin. "Let's just say, you've officially got my attention."
The second he said that, Sally's stomach tensed. She hadn't seen that coming. She swallowed hard, kind of on instinct. "I thought you were into Kendall," she said. "You really are a player, huh? That's a lot of women to juggle."
Jaxon's brows furrowed slightly. "Who told you I like Kendall?"
Sally froze for a moment, staring at him in disbelief. "Didn't you say the woman you love is already married? When I saw her at the prison that day, she was definitely wearing a wedding ring."
"Well, so are you. You're also married."
His words were deliberately vague, leaving her unable to decipher his true meaning. 'So, does he actually like Kendall or not?' Sally wondered.
Seeing her remain silent, Jaxon released his grip. "Today, I had someone investigate the waiter who served Brad the juice. The guy's already been deported from Westmere, so for now, there's no way to follow the trail and find out who's really behind this."
"No need to investigate further. I think I know who's behind this." Sally's tone was flat, her expression unreadable.
Jaxon arched a brow, intrigued. "How did you figure out who it was?"
"The only one bold enough to pull something like this in public? That has to be Lena. I don't know what exactly she has planned, but I'm sure of one thing—she'd wanted Brad to believe I slept with another man. And now? Brad totally bought it.
"He's probably out right now, losing his mind trying to figure out who it has been..." She didn't finish her sentence.
"Looks like you've got quite a pack of predators circling you." Jaxon reached out and yanked her scarf off.
Sally felt her heart race, anxiety tightening in her chest.
"So Lena's been spreading rumors about you just because of these marks?"
"Yep," Sally said with a bitter smile, "you left such obvious marks, Mr. Zale. I didn't even have time to check this morning before heading straight to the clinic—where Lena caught me red-handed. Of course, she immediately went and told Brad all about it."
"And you? Planning to get back at her?"
"I'm not out for revenge," Sally said coolly. "What's the point of an endless cycle? Honestly, just dealing with Brad is already overwhelming—I really don't have the energy for her."
"Want me to handle it for you?" Jaxon turned to lock eyes with her, his voice dropping to a low murmur.
"No, thanks," Sally said, immediately steering the conversation away. "It's getting late, Mr. Zale. You should head home and get some rest."
As Sally reached for the door handle to get out, Jaxon grasped her wrist. "Now that you're in my car, do you really think I'd let you take a cab home?"
Sally froze, momentarily caught off guard. She glanced back at him and gave a small nod. "Thank you, Mr. Zale."
Jaxon fell silent. Rolling down the window, he snapped his fingers at Caleb nearby. Caleb caught the signal and strode back.
"With your commute being so inconvenient, you should really consider getting a car," said Jaxon.
Sally replied, "I've got more pressing matters to deal with right now. Maybe when my finances are more stable."
Jaxon nodded thoughtfully and fell silent.
Over the next few days, Lillian had finally started to stabilize a bit. Sally threw herself into work, barely thinking about anything else—until Friday evening.
That was when she spotted a new car parked right outside her house. Right next to it stood a man in a full suit.
Sally didn't recognize the man—she'd never seen him before. She had no idea why the stranger had parked right in front of her house.
Sally walked over, curious. "Sir, would you mind moving your car? We've got kids on this block who usually come out to play around this time. It's not the safest place to park."
"Excuse me, are you Mrs. Zale?" The man regarded her respectfully, a faint smile gracing his lips.
Sally gave a slight nod. "Yes. And you are...?"
"I'm the owner of a car dealership and a friend of Jaxon's. He asked me to deliver this car to you.
"Just send me the necessary documents later, and I'll handle the entire registration process—you don't need to come in person. I'll take care of everything for you."
Sally was caught off guard for a second. After a brief moment of stunned silence, she came back to her senses. Sally thought in disbelief, 'Jaxon sent me a car?'
Sally gasped. "Wait—Jaxon? Are you sure?"
"Yes. If you're Mrs. Sally Zale, then there's no mistake—it was indeed Jaxon who asked me to deliver the car here."
Sally's eyes widened in utter shock. That conversation from the other day in the car flashed through her mind.
'I just made an offhand remark about not having much money right now, and the next thing I know, Jaxon bought me a brand-new car and had it delivered right to my doorstep,' she thought. Shock and disbelief crashed over Sally in an instant.
"Mrs. Zale, here are your car keys and the owner's manual—my card is tucked inside. If you have any questions about the vehicle, don't hesitate to call me anytime. I'm at your service 24/7."
The dealership owner's words snapped Sally out of her thoughts. She waved her hand in refusal. "I can't accept this car. Could you please call Jaxon and let him know? Ask him to take it back."
The dealership owner froze momentarily, his hand with the car keys and manual still suspended in mid-air. "Uh, Mrs. Zale, I—"
"That's my final decision. Thanks for coming all the way here. I'll head inside now—please have the car moved as soon as possible." Without waiting for his response, Sally turned and strode into the house.
Abigail was already home. When she saw Sally walk in, she asked with concern, "Hey, Sally, you alright? You look a bit off—did something happen?"
Sally glanced at Abigail in the dining room, then hurried over and filled her in on what had happened.
Abigail gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "No way. Why would Jaxon suddenly give you a car? What on earth is going on?"
Sally shook her head. "Honestly, I've got no clue either."
Abigail leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a whisper. "Honestly, do you think Jaxon might have a thing for you?"
