No sooner had Sally's voice faded than Jaxon suddenly leaned in. A searing kiss landed on her lips, making her eyes go wide in shock.
Jaxon's eyes were tightly shut, but a dangerous energy radiated from him, sweeping over Sally in waves.
To her astonishment, Sally caught a flicker of something resembling affection on his face.
Before Jaxon officially returned and started his career, their paths had only crossed a handful of times, mostly when he'd saved her. But he seemed to have long forgotten about those moments.
To him, Sally was nothing more than a passing stranger, someone who barely mattered.
Ever since the fire at the orphanage, Jaxon and Sally have been getting more and more tangled up. Things just kept escalating, spiraling out of control. Now, he even took the initiative to kiss her.
Jaxon was quietly invading every part of Sally's life, silently lurking all around her, and honestly, it was terrifying. He nipped any thought she ever had of trying to seduce him in the bud before it even had a chance to start.
"Jaxon?" Just then, a voice suddenly called out from the living room.
At that, Sally instinctively pressed her hand against Jaxon's chest, trying to push him away. But Jaxon caught her hand and pinned it firmly against the door.
After pulling his lips away, Jaxon looked down at her and said, "Mrs. Zale, does that feel real enough for you now?"
Sally's heart was pounding so wildly, and it felt like it might leap right out of her throat.
"Mr. Zale, I've told you. My divorce from Brad is none of your business. I don't need your help, and as for what happened today," she hesitated.
"What? Planning to pretend nothing happened again?" Jaxon seized her chin, forcing her face up to meet his cutting gaze.
His voice was cold and scathing. "We've crossed every line except the last one. Do you really think you can walk away unscathed?"
For a moment, Sally's words caught in her throat. Aside from that final step, they'd done everything else.
"Do you know how outsiders see us right now?" Sally asked.
A dangerously captivating smile played at Jaxon's lips. He released her chin, leaned in close to her ear, his voice thick with seduction as he whispered, "Call me your lover."
At his words, her eyelashes fluttered wildly.
Jaxon pulled back, cupping her face, his thumb gently tracing her cheek. "What we have now is exactly like Brad and Lena's arrangement," Jaxon said with a low, husky laugh. "Now you understand, don't you?"
Sally struggled to calm her racing heart, doing her best to maintain her composure.
Matching his mocking smile, she replied, "Mr. Zale, I have no intention of being your lover. If that's what you want, there are plenty of women who admire you. Please, just let me go."
"And what if I say no?" Jaxon's voice was dangerously low as it brushed against her ear, sending a chill down her spine.
Her hands, clutching at the sides of her skirt, involuntarily tightened for a moment.
To Sally, Jaxon was nothing but danger, someone she should never get close to. Yet, against all reason, they became hopelessly entangled.
"Jaxon? Sally? Where are you?" Brad's voice was getting closer.
Sally swallowed hard. "Mr. Zale, he's coming. I'll go out first. Wait a bit before you follow, okay?"
Before Jaxon could respond, she shoved against his chest and fumbled for the doorknob.
"Mrs. Zale, you should know by now. Once you've caught my attention, there's no clean exit from my games," Jaxon murmured, his voice low and dangerous behind her.
The words made her freeze, her hand still gripping the doorknob. Forcing down her anxiety, Sally opened the door and slipped out.
Jaxon watched her retreat with hooded eyes, that infuriating smirk never wavering.
Sally reached the edge of the hallway just as Brad happened to be walking toward her.
Brad glanced at her, then at the storage room door. "What were you doing in there?"
"It's pouring outside, so I couldn't leave. Just killing time," Sally replied, her voice low and measured. "I haven't been back in three years. I wanted to see if anything in the house has changed."
Brad's brow furrowed slightly at her explanation. He didn't respond, just looked around. "Have you seen Jaxon?"
"He went to the restroom." To give Jaxon a chance to slip away, Sally looked up at Brad. "There's something I need to discuss with you. Come with me."
She started walking ahead, only relaxing when she heard Brad's footsteps following behind her.
They reached the living room and sat across from each other.
Brad said impatiently, "What do you want to say? Make it quick." He picked up the cup from the table and drained it in one gulp.
Sally raised her glistening eyes to meet his gaze. After a brief pause, she said, "I know you care about your grandpa's health, but the current situation doesn't allow us to keep dragging this out.
"I hope you'll sign the divorce papers soon and work with me to end this marriage."
"Is there really nothing else you want to discuss with me other than this?" Brad's grip on his cup tightened, his knuckles turning pale. There was something unreadable in his deep eyes.
"I'd love to talk about something else, but given our situation, what else is there to say?" Sally replied, her voice unnervingly calm, her face expressionless.
Brad let out a bitter, mocking chuckle. "No words for me, but plenty for your lover, right?"
He slammed his cup down on the table. The resounding crack echoed through every corner of the living room.
"Whatever you think. Frankly, I couldn't care less. The only reason I'm pushing for this divorce is to keep certain things from tarnishing the Zale family's reputation.
"If you refuse to cooperate and things blow up, don't blame me," Sally said, her tone cold and resolute.
No sooner had she finished than Brad's voice rose, sharp with accusation. "How noble of you, washing your hands so clean."
"I'm not doing so. Just stating facts," Sally shot back.
After all, the truth always came out, and right now, things were dangerously volatile.
Even if Brad couldn't uncover who was with Sally that night yet, it was only a matter of time before he found out. And Jaxon was proving to be even more dangerous than she'd imagined.
Sally couldn't afford to keep gambling like this or risk being branded a loose woman in the end.
Brad shrugged and said casually, "Like I said, I'm fine with a divorce, but not until Grandpa's health stabilizes."
Sally's expression darkened. "Can you stop using your grandpa as your excuse already?"
