Jaxon's expression darkened instantly after hearing the truth. He thought, 'So Sally was right after all.'
Connor muttered, "I just can't figure it out. Why would she target me behind my back? I don't even know her. What reason would she have to drug me out of nowhere?"
Connor fixed his gaze on Jaxon, his expression grave and his eyes filled with confusion.
Jaxon said, "You weren't the only one who got drugged that day. There was something in Sally's drink, too."
Jaxon slammed the cup down on the table with a resounding thud.
Upon hearing this, shock flashed across Connor's eyes. "Wait? There was something in Sally's juice, too? So you're saying she was trying to set me up with—"
Connor gestured vaguely with his hand, but left the rest unsaid, the implication hanging in the air.
Jaxon nodded without hesitation. "That's likely."
"Just to get at Mrs. Zale, that damn bitch had to drag me into this mess too? There's no way I'm letting this slide," Connor roared.
"So, you're going to go after her, huh?" Jaxon asked.
Connor said, "If Mrs. Zale knew the truth, she'd probably want to go after her too, wouldn't she?"
Jaxon replied nonchalantly, "She already knows the truth, but she's not planning to get revenge on Lena."
Anger flashed across Connor's face. "She's really just going to take this lying down?"
Jaxon's lips curled into a faint smirk. "Maybe she thinks it's not the right time to strike back, so she's choosing to swallow her pride for now. But if you're planning to go after her, you might as well settle Sally's score along with yours."
Connor let out a low, hoarse chuckle. "Using me as her weapon—that's a pretty ruthless move."
Jaxon asked, "What difference does it make if it's you or me?" He leaned against the armrest, his thumb grazing his jawline, a cold smirk playing at the corners of his lips.
Connor raised an eyebrow and asked, "So, are you really planning to help Mrs. Zale get her revenge?"
"I did plan to," Jaxon said, "but she wouldn't have it."
Connor narrowed his eyes at Jaxon with a knowing look. "Jaxon, word is you've been getting pretty close with Mrs. Zale lately. You even bought her a car? What's going on between you two?"
Jaxon lifted his glinting eyes, fixing Connor with a silent stare.
"Don't tell me you've got a thing for her?" Connor said, catching the look on his face and instantly getting it. "She's Brad's wife, you know—"
"They're getting divorced soon. You already knew that, didn't you?" Jaxon's tone was flat as he lowered his voice.
Connor pointed out. "They're getting divorced, but it's not finalized yet, is it? As long as the papers aren't signed, they're still legally married."
"Mind your own business," Jaxon said coldly. He couldn't be bothered to respond. He rose swiftly from the couch and headed straight for the second floor.
Connor called from behind, "Jaxon, if Brad finds out about this, he'll probably skin you alive."
"Well, let's see if he has got the guts or the skills to pull that off," Jaxon sneered. He didn't slow his pace up the stairs, though his voice sharpened noticeably.
Connor watched Jaxon's retreating figure as he ascended the stairs, a knowing smirk tugging irresistibly at his lips.
For years, Jaxon had been completely devoted to his career, leaving no room for romance. Who would've thought that Jaxon—the legendary workaholic—would finally fall for someone, and when he did, it was absolutely explosive.
Connor thought, 'If word of this gets out, given Jaxon's status, it'll send shockwaves through Westmere's entire business elite.'
The next morning, when Sally arrived at the clinic, a steady drizzle was still falling outside.
The rain today wasn't as heavy as yesterday's downpour, but the steady showers still kept most people away. Business at the clinic was slow. By noon, they'd only seen two patients.
Seated at the consultation desk, Sally was replying to Abigail's message when a gossip alert suddenly popped up on her phone screen. Spotting the familiar name, Sally immediately tapped on the news.
A scandal exposing Lena's explosive temper was going viral across all major platforms.
Lena had always maintained a flawless public persona. She'd never been caught up in a scandal like this before. Clearly, someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Suddenly, the sharp click of high heels echoed from the doorway.
"Hello, miss, do you have an appointment—" Carlos, manning the reception desk, cut himself off mid-sentence the instant he recognized Lena.
Though she was disguised with sunglasses and a hat, Carlos recognized Lena immediately. This wasn't his first encounter with her.
Sally looked up at the sound, and her expression darkened as she saw Lena walking slowly into the clinic.
Sally just saw the gossip about Lena, and she didn't expect Lena to walk right into the clinic.
"Well, well, Miss Yasmin, look who decided to grace us with your presence?" Sally leaned back in her chair, fixing Lena with a steady gaze. Her voice came out low and measured.
"Did you do this?" Without even removing her sunglasses, Lena slammed the tablet down onto Sally's consultation desk.
Following Lena's gaze, Sally lowered her eyes to the tablet on the desk. There it was, the same gossip piece Sally'd just read.
After just a cursory glance, Sally lifted her eyes and fixed Lena, who stood before her, with a steady gaze.
Sally's lips curled into a cold, thin smile. "Miss Yasmin, what makes you think I have that kind of pull to do something like this?"
Lena accused. "You may be useless, but that reporter friend of yours sure isn't. And I've heard you've been cozying up to some sugar daddy lately.
"If it wasn't your friend who did it, then it must've been your lover. Don't even think you can hide this from me."
"Miss Yasmin," Sally shot back, "didn't you always insist on having evidence for everything? Now you just show up and start throwing around baseless accusations. I could sue you for slander."
Sally rose to her feet, planting both hands firmly on the desk. She lifted her chin and fixed Lena with a cool, assessing stare. A frosty glint flickered in the arch of her upturned eyes.
"Honestly, I can't think of anyone else who'd have it out for me like you do," Lena said.
"Then tell me. What possible reason would I have to go after you?" Sally paused deliberately, then shot Lena a cool look, continuing, "Unless you're worried I'm getting back at you for drugging me that day?"
Lena was nearly thrown off by Sally, but quickly caught herself. Coming to her senses, Lena fired back without hesitation, "When did I ever drug you? Don't talk nonsense."
Sally's expression darkened as she folded her arms across her chest, her entire aura turning glacial. Every time Sally saw Lena, all those memories from the past came flooding back, whether she wanted them to or not.
The pain and humiliation of those three years crashed over Sally all at once like a tidal wave, threatening to engulf her completely.
After steadying herself, Sally said flatly, "Then why would you pin this on me? Ever think it might be one of your other enemies framing you?"
"No one else would dare come after me—only you," Lena snapped.
"Miss Yasmin, you can keep up the act for others, but drop the pretense with me," Sally said with a sly grin. "I know exactly who you are. Maybe others don't, but I sure do."
Connor muttered, "I just can't figure it out. Why would she target me behind my back? I don't even know her. What reason would she have to drug me out of nowhere?"
