Sally glared at him. "Let go, or I'll call Jaxon."
Brad looked down at her, the resentment in his eyes darkening. After a brief hesitation, Brad ultimately released Sally. Just then, Brad's phone started ringing in his pocket.
Brad glanced down at his phone, answered it anyway, and strode straight toward the front door.
The moment the door swung open, Brad was met with Jaxon's thunderous expression.
Brad gave Jaxon a slight nod, then continued his call as he hurried downstairs. "Don't worry. I'll be right there."
Jaxon watched Brad's retreating figure, his eyes darkening dangerously. He had just come from the study. As he passed by their room and heard the commotion inside, he deliberately chose to interrupt them this way.
Jaxon strode in and locked the door behind him. Sally remained standing on the balcony. When Jaxon walked in, her eyelashes gave an involuntary flutter.
Sally lowered her voice, her tone cautious. "Mr. Zale, what brings you here so suddenly?"
Brad's brow darkened as he quickly closed the distance between them. "What did he just do to you?"
Sally gulped nervously, her gaze darting away. "It's nothing."
Jaxon noticed Sally lowering her head, her hair and chin trying to hide it, but the faint blush on her neck didn't escape his sharp gaze.
"Did he lay a hand on you?" Jaxon's voice dropped dangerously low, making Sally instinctively step back.
Sally shook her head. "No."
The next second, Jaxon lifted her chin with his fingers, his voice dripping with icy accusation. "Then why is your neck so red?"
Sally didn't want to dwell on this topic any longer. She said calmly, "Mr. Zale, isn't it time for dinner? I'm feeling a bit hungry. Shall we go downstairs and eat together?"
Sally pulled her hand free from Jaxon's grip, sidestepped him, and headed straight for the door.
Jaxon said in a low, firm voice, "Like I said before, if you're ever wronged, come to me."
"Mr. Zale, this is my room with Brad. With so many people in the house, if anyone finds you here, I won't be able to explain it," Sally said calmly but firmly. "Please come downstairs with me now."
With those words, she pulled her hand free from his grip and hurried toward the door.
Jaxon watched intently as she walked away, ultimately remaining silent before following her out.
But just then, Lauren, coming down from the third floor, caught sight of the scene.
Lauren recoiled in shock. She clapped a hand over her mouth in disbelief, her pupils dilating instantly as her eyes filled with shock.
'Why did Jaxon come out of my son's room? And he came out with Sally?' Lauren couldn't believe it as she wondered.
When Sally arrived at the dining room, Brad was nowhere to be seen.
"Where's Brad?" Sally turned to ask the butler.
"He just drove off. Apparently, Miss Yasmin's car was involved in a fender bender," the butler explained.
Sally nodded thoughtfully. 'No wonder he left in such a hurry, so it's his sweetheart who got into an accident,' she thought wryly. 'Perfect. Just as well, I wasn't looking forward to having dinner with him anyway.'
Just then, Jaxon's deep voice came from behind her. "Serve dinner."
"Right away, Mr. Zale," the butler responded promptly.
Sally pulled out a chair and sat across from Jaxon without a word.
After a moment, the butler brought over a cup of milk and set it in front of Sally. He said gently, "Mrs. Zale, Mr. Jaxon Zale asked the kitchen to prepare this for you. It's a warming drink."
All of a sudden, Sally froze for a split second before looking up at the man sitting across from her. "Thank you, Mr. Zale."
Jaxon remained silent. His elegant fingers gripped the spoon as he slowly stirred the soup.
Sally looked up at the butler. "Where is everyone else? Aren't they joining us for dinner?"
"Mrs. Lauren Zale is upstairs looking after Mr. Howard Zale. She asked you to go ahead and eat. The rest will be back tonight," he explained.
Sally gave a slight nod and fell silent, lowering her head to sip her milk. It added something, tasting sweet and just a little spicy. just like her feelings at that moment, sweet, a little spicy, and utterly indescribable.
With the butler gone, only the two of them remained in the dining room. His overwhelming presence from across the table instantly engulfed her. That suffocating tension kept rising.
Jaxon said in a deep voice, "Relax, it's just dinner. Why so nervous? We've done this before."
Just as Sally was about to look up at the sound of his deep voice from across the table, a piece of rib suddenly appeared on her plate.
Her gaze followed the fork to Jaxon's well-defined hand as it withdrew with quiet grace.
As their eyes met, Sally felt her heart race even faster. Once two people kissed, hugged, and bared their souls to each other, the chemistry between them was never the same again. This profound realization kept welling up inside Sally.
"I'm not nervous. You're overthinking it, Mr. Zale." Sally tried to steady her pounding heart. She lowered her head and quietly took a bite of the rib Jaxon had placed on her plate.
Jaxon remained silent and placed another piece of sweet and sour meat into her bowl.
Jaxon's blatant concern wasn't just noticed by Sally across the table—Lauren, lurking in the shadows, had already seen everything.
Lauren had been lurking by the second-floor railing, where she had a clear view of the dining scene below.
Though nothing overtly inappropriate ever happened between them, there was always an undeniable tension in the air when the two were together, something subtle, impossible to put into words.
'They are so sweet,' she wondered. The thought flashed through Lauren's mind, startling her so much that she instinctively recoiled a step.
Dinner ended at 6:30 PM. After saying goodbye to Jaxon, Sally drove home.
After watching the car disappear from sight, Jaxon slowly withdrew his gaze and said coolly, "No need to hide, Lauren."
As soon as Jaxon's voice faded, Lauren, who had been hiding behind the door and secretly observing everything, gave an involuntary shudder of fear.
He never looked back, his gaze locked on the direction where the car had vanished.
Lauren gritted her teeth and finally stepped out.
Once they were standing side by side, Lauren forced a light, slightly awkward smile and said, "Jaxon, I just wanted to see Sally off, but since you were already outside, I didn't come out."
Jaxon looked at her coolly. "Since when did you develop a habit of spying, Lauren?"
"Huh?" Lauren instinctively turned to the man beside her, nervously swallowing hard. "No way. Why would I spy on you? You're imagining things."
Jaxon turned and shot her a sidelong glance. "Mrs. Zale is Brad's wife. If you want to watch, do it openly. No need to be sneaking around. Otherwise, people might think you've got skeletons in your closet."
Lauren froze for a split second. Jaxon was notorious throughout the entire Zale family and the whole business community for his ruthless nature; those who crossed him rarely lived to regret it.
After all these years in the Zale family, Lauren only ever feared one person, Jaxon. Yet, there were questions Lauren desperately wanted to ask.
Lauren gritted her teeth and blurted out, "Jaxon, haven't you been getting a little too close to Sally lately?"
Brad looked down at her, the resentment in his eyes darkening. After a brief hesitation, Brad ultimately released Sally. Just then, Brad's phone started ringing in his pocket.
