Jaxon's expression darkened as he cast a shadowed, sidelong glance at Lauren beside him.
After a long pause, Jaxon spoke in a detached tone. "Even though they're about to get divorced, Sally is still Brad's wife, and in a way, that makes her family to me. Since I get along well with her, shouldn't you be relieved, Lauren?"
At his words, Lauren's brow relaxed slightly. That made sense.
"I have matters to attend to. Excuse me." Seeing that Lauren remained silent, Jaxon strode purposefully and swiftly toward the Maybach in the garage.
Caleb held the car door open for him, nodding in acknowledgment toward Lauren before heading to the driver's seat.
Lauren's gaze followed the departing car, her face clouding over moment by moment. She thought, 'Things are definitely not that simple.'
By the time Sally got home, the rain had stopped. Locking the car, Sally lowered her gaze to the vehicle before her and, in that instant, made up her mind. She resolved to transfer the money to Jaxon.
When she got home, Sally carefully checked her bank account balance.
After spending 800 thousand dollars on the clinic's renovation and equipment, plus handling matters with Lillian and deducting recent living expenses, Sally now has 170 thousand dollars remaining in her account.
Sally thought to herself, 'I did promise Jaxon I'd transfer him $50,000, but Brad said this car is worth more than 500 thousand dollars.'
Sally didn't have that much money on hand, but just giving him $50,000 would be completely unreasonable.
After much deliberation, she would transfer 160 thousand dollars to Jaxon and keep just 10 thousand dollars for herself.
Sally called Caleb, Jaxon's assistant, obtained the group's corporate account details, and immediately transferred the money. After transferring the money, Sally finally felt at ease.
Abigail noticed Sally exhale deeply and, with a playful grin, teased, "Hey Sally, something up with you?"
"You must be joking. What's the big deal?" Sally set down her phone, lips curling into a faint, calm smile. "I just transferred the car payment to Jaxon."
"Wait, what?" Abigail quickly scooted closer to Sally, her eyes widening in surprise. "How much did you transfer to Jaxon?"
"Brad said that car costs about five hundred grand. I still had 170 thousand dollars left, so I transferred 160 thousand dollars to him. As for the remaining 340 thousand dollars, well, I'll pay him back when I can afford it," said Sally.
"What were you thinking? That car was a gift. Why would you transfer so much money back to him?" Abigail frowned in utter bewilderment at Sally.
Sally's smile grew even more composed. "Accepting expensive gifts always comes with strings attached, especially since we're basically strangers.
"I never felt comfortable driving that car around, but now that I've wired him the money, I can finally breathe easy."
Even though it was not the full amount, it was still better than nothing.
"Jaxon? Come on, he's Westmere's top business mogul. He's worth billions. You really think he cares about the money for one car?" Abigail said.
Sally waved her hand at Abigail and said, "Let's keep things separate."
Abigail grabbed Sally's arm anxiously. "Tell me Jaxon didn't actually take the money?"
"That's exactly why I went through the Crownstone Group's corporate account. I knew he wouldn't accept it otherwise," Sally explained, her tone cautious.
Sally leaned back in her chair, her expression noticeably softened.
Abigail dramatically smacked her forehead, then flashed Sally two big thumbs up. "Only you, Sally. I'm totally blown away."
Sally glanced at her reaction and gave a gentle smile. "Look. What you owe always has to be paid back eventually. Anyway, I'm planning to take on some crystalware restoration gigs. After a while, I'll have that money back."
Abigail's eyes lit up. "You're taking commissions now?"
"Yes." Sally nodded firmly. "I'm officially taking commissions like Hazel now. You know how TikTok and other short video platforms have been blowing up these past few years?
"I'll be recording restoration videos and starting my own channel—gotta set myself up for the future."
"That's a brilliant idea." Abigail gave her another big thumbs up. "With your crystalware-making and restoration skills, you could totally go viral overnight."
Sally got up from the couch with a small smile. "Now you're just being ridiculous."
Abigail followed her upstairs, insisting, "I'm dead serious. If you go viral, it'll be absolutely crazy."
Sally listened to Abigail's words, but she kept walking without missing a beat.
The reason she took commissions as Hazel was simple. She was genuinely strapped for cash. The clinic was a long-term venture that wouldn't generate much income anytime soon, but making and restoring crystalware could bring in money quickly.
With Lillian in the picture, Sally felt the financial pressure mounting—she knew she had to start planning for the future.
The next morning, Jaxon had just stepped into the CEO's office when Caleb followed him in. "Mr. Zale, I'm not sure if you're already aware of this, but there's something I need to report."
Jaxon sat down in his executive chair, looked up at Caleb with a cold, indifferent gaze. "Speak," he ordered.
Caleb reported, "Yesterday, Mrs. Zale asked me for our corporate account. I just checked with the finance department. She transferred 160 thousand dollars to our account."
Jaxon's hand paused mid-reach for the file, caught off guard for a moment. Jaxon lifted his gaze to Caleb. "160 thousand dollars?"
"Yes." Caleb nodded slightly, then asked tentatively, "Did Mrs. Zale return part of the car payment?"
Jaxon tossed the file aside, leaned back in his chair, elbows braced on the armrests, and sat in silence.
Jaxon thought to himself, 'She clearly said she'd only transfer $50,000, yet she ended up sending 160 thousand dollars?'
"Have Finance return 110 thousand dollars via the original payment method," Jaxon ordered.
"Yes, sir." Caleb gave a quick nod and exited the CEO's office.
Ten minutes later, suddenly, Sally's phone pinged with a text message notification.
After seeing off the patient, Sally glanced down at her phone screen. When she saw it was a deposit notification, her brow suddenly furrowed slightly.
With a quick swipe of her thumb, Sally unlocked the screen and the text message popped up.
It was the 110 thousand dollars refunded by the Crownstone Group.
'This must be Jaxon's doing,' Sally thought. 'Without Jaxon's approval, there's no way that 110 thousand dollars would have been refunded.
'So he'd actually kept my words in mind. I said $50,000, and that's exactly what he took, not a penny more.'
After hesitating for a moment, Sally finally rose from the consultation desk. She said, "Carlos, I need to step out for a bit. Can you look after the clinic while I'm gone?"
Carlos nodded quickly. "Got it."
Sally grabbed her car keys and headed straight to the Crownstone Group.
She'd heard of the Crownstone Group before, but this was her first time actually setting foot here.
Sally stood before the Crownstone Group's building. The skyscraper stretched so high it seemed to scrape the sky; she had to crane her neck just to glimpse its summit.
Steeling herself, Sally walked in anyway. "Excuse me, I'm here to see Jaxon. Could you tell me which floor his office is on?"
When Sally approached the front desk, her eyes fell on the sleek-haired receptionist standing before her.
The straight-haired receptionist gave her a quick once-over. "Here to see Mr. Zale? Do you have an appointment?"
