"Yes." Sally nodded gently. "But I don't have an appointment. I just came by about something urgent."
The receptionist with straight hair frowned slightly. "You don't seem to be a client, do you? Mr. Zale doesn't see anyone who isn't a client. May I ask who you are?"
Sally hesitated momentarily. 'With my divorce from Brad pending, claiming to be his wife would just complicate things,' she thought. 'Besides, calling myself his wife would just draw too much attention'
After a brief hesitation, Sally said calmly, "I'm his friend."
"I'm sorry," the receptionist said. "We get far too many women every day using the friend excuse to approach Mr. Zale. Without an appointment, I'm afraid I can't let you upstairs. Maybe you could call Mr. Zale directly?"
Last week's financial magazine featured a portrait of Jaxon, and its publication set off an unstoppable chain reaction. Countless women approached him daily, all claiming to be his friend.
Those poor receptionists must be having a hard time.
Sally's gaze rested on the straight-haired receptionist, her expression darkening slightly. Getting stopped here was something Sally had never expected.
The straight-haired beauty wore a mocking smirk, watching her with undisguised disdain.
Sally suddenly realized how abrupt her actions had been. She smiled at the woman and said, "Never mind then. I'll just try again later."
"Miss?" Just as Sally turned to leave, the straight-haired receptionist called after her, her voice now dripping with even more scorn and arrogance.
Sally turned around at the sound. "What is it?" she asked.
"Please don't bother coming back," the straight-haired receptionist sneered. "It only adds to our workload. Mr. Zale isn't some shallow man who'd fall for cheap tricks like yours."
Hearing this, Sally finally understood what she meant.
Just as her expression turned cold and she was about to speak, a voice—familiar yet unexpected—suddenly came from behind. "What nonsense are you spouting?"
Both Sally and the receptionist turned at the sound of the voice, only to see Connor standing off to the side.
Though they'd only met once, Sally immediately recognized Connor.
The straight-haired receptionist immediately straightened up and greeted respectfully, "Hello, Mr. Faye."
Connor shot the receptionist a sharp look. "This is Mr. Zale's wife you're talking to. How dare you speak to her like that? Watch yourself, or you might just get fired."
At the word, the receptionist's eyes widened in shock. Two passing employees were also stunned by the mention, eyeing Sally up and down with open curiosity.
"Wait? Mr. Zale is married?"
"Is he secretly married? How come I've never heard of it before?"
Amid the murmurs, Sally instinctively stepped forward and gently tugged at Connor's sleeve. "It's okay, Mr. Faye.
"I just needed to see Jaxon about something. I didn't inform him in advance, so that caused this misunderstanding."
Seeing her expression soften, Connor gave a faint smile. "Come on up with me. I'm heading to a project meeting anyway."
"Alright, thank you, Mr. Faye," Sally said. She followed Connor into the elevator, keeping a few steps behind him.
Connor pressed two floor buttons, then turned to Sally and said, "Jaxon's on the 38th, the top floor. I've got a meeting to attend, so I won't be able to walk you up."
Sally said, "No need to bother, Mr. Faye. I can go up on my own."
Connor gave a slight nod, then abruptly changed the subject. "Mrs. Zale, I heard Lena drugged you that day too?"
Sally was taken aback—she never expected the conversation to abruptly shift from Jaxon's office to the drugging incident. It took her a few seconds to process the sudden shift in topic.
"Yeah," Sally replied evenly.
Connor abruptly leaned in. "So, who saved you that night?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Sally's heart leaped into her throat, and a fierce blush instantly spread across her face.
Sally thought, 'Jaxon never told me Connor would be this blunt.' Her cheeks flushed with surprise.
"I heard you and Brad are getting divorced, so it couldn't have been him who rescued you that night," Connor lowered his voice and asked, "Jaxon was in that room too. Was it him?"
Sally's face flushed an even deeper shade of red. Just then, the elevator doors abruptly slid open. For Sally, it was nothing short of a lifeline. "Mr. Faye, you're here."
Connor flashed a knowing grin. "Don't want to say? That's cool. I can pretty much guess anyway." He strode off, that knowing smirk never leaving his face.
Only after the elevator doors slid shut did Sally finally collect herself. As the elevator doors opened on the 38th floor, Sally spotted Caleb standing by the doors, about to head down.
Caleb led her to the CEO's office. "Mr. Zale is in a meeting right now—he should be back in about ten minutes."
"Thanks," Sally said. After seeing Caleb off, Sally looked around.
Jaxon's office was all sleek blacks, whites, and grays—every bit as cold and distant as the man himself. Her gaze drifted to a door beside the desk. It was CEO's Lounge.
Just as those words caught her eye, she suddenly heard the door open behind her. Sally turned at the sound, meeting Jaxon's indifferent gaze.
Jaxon must have known she was here. With no extra expression on his face, he walked indifferently toward his desk and asked, "Mrs. Zale, what brings you here?"
Sally shot a sharp glance at his back, quickly rose from the sofa, and strode straight over to him.
"Don't play dumb, Mr. Zale," Sally said as she pulled out a chair and sat down at the table. "I just wired you 160 thousand dollars yesterday, and this morning you sent 110 thousand dollars back to me."
"Wasn't it you who said you only wanted a $50,000 car?" Jaxon set the documents down on the desk, a faint smile playing at his lips.
Sally rarely saw Jaxon smile. For a moment, that fleeting expression left her momentarily dazed. 'He looks breathtaking when he smiles,' Sally thought.
Seeing that she remained silent, Jaxon spoke up again. "You've just been released and money's tight for you right now. I'm returning this 110 thousand dollars for Lillian's sake.
"If I just handed you the money directly, I know you wouldn't accept it, Mrs. Zale."
What he really meant was that he wanted to provide for Lillian, but he knew she would never accept it.
Sally said calmly, "Let's keep things clear. I thought the car was only 260 thousand dollars, but it actually cost five hundred grand. I don't like owing anyone.
"I won't just pay you back the 160 thousand dollars—if things get better for me, I'll return every last cent."
The moment Sally finished speaking, the faint smile on Jaxon's lips froze for a split second. He rose slowly, bracing one hand on the desk. With the other, he reached out and gripped her chin.
His chilling gaze bore down on her, thick with menace. "Keeping score with me like this—what's that supposed to mean?"
Sally's eyelashes gave a slight, involuntary flutter. She paused to consider. Given how tense things were between her and Jaxon right now, it really was far too precarious.
'This is just my way of drawing a clear line,' Sally thought. Her tone was cool, her face unreadable as she looked up at him. "It means exactly what it says, Mr. Zale. Or do I need to spell it out?"
