Jaxon released her chin, circled the table, and stopped right in front of her. His well-defined fingers rested on the armrest of her chair.
With a gentle turn, he swiveled her to face him. leaving her completely trapped under his control.
Jaxon braced his hands on either side of her chair, looming over her. "You want to settle the score with me now? Do you really think we can ever be even?"
Sally found herself gazing into Jaxon's mesmerizing phoenix eyes, her long lashes fluttering uncontrollably. She didn't even know how to respond to this.
Their situation was utterly absurd. These accounts between them could never be squared.
"Look. I came here today specifically to settle this with you," she said. "Even if you don't take the money today, I'll still make sure it gets back to you eventually. Please, Mr. Zale, don't return it to me again next time."
Sally pressed her alabaster hand against Jaxon's chest, trying to push him away. She had barely taken two steps when his fingers closed around her wrist, yanking her back.
In the next instant, his arm snaked around her waist, pinning her against the edge of the desk.
"Come on, Mrs. Zale, after all those intimate moments we've shared, don't tell me you don't have any other feelings for me," he said.
Sally kept her eyes fixed on the floor, refusing to look up. Jaxon gripped her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.
Just then, there was a sudden knock at the door. "Jaxon, are you in there?" A soft, gentle voice called from outside.
Sally's heart was pounding out of control. 'Isn't that Kendall—the woman Jaxon loves?' she wondered. 'What is she doing here all of a sudden?'
Before she could even react, Jaxon's hand reached for her hips and lifted her off the desk, carrying her toward the lounge. Her alabaster legs instinctively wrapped around his waist.
This position was way too intimate. Sally's cheeks were burning and her heart racing.
The door slammed shut behind them as he quickly locked it from the inside.
Sally scrambled out of Jaxon's embrace, her face tense as she stared at him. "Jaxon, why is she here?"
Jaxon pinned Sally against the door, pressing her hands firmly against it, a faint, mocking smile on his lips. "You're so nervous, Mrs. Zale. It's easy to get the wrong idea. Why do you make it feel like we're sneaking around?"
Sally's gaze snapped up, catching the teasing glint in Jaxon's upturned eyes, a faint, suggestive spark lingering there.
He lifted his hand to trace her cheek, and when his fingertip brushed her lips, her hands instinctively shot up to clamp around his wrist.
Sally pleaded, "Mr. Zale, please don't."
Jaxon leaned in, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. "Don't what?"
Sally gritted her teeth and blurted out, "Kendall is right outside. Please, stop this."
No sooner had her voice faded than the main office door swung open from outside.
"Jaxon?" Kendall's voice echoed through the hallway, her footsteps growing louder as she approached.
Sally shot Jaxon a nervous glance, then quickly looked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.
"She's looking for you. You'd better go out first," she whispered urgently. "I'll hide behind the curtains."
Even though Kendall was married, Sally could tell Kendall still had feelings for Jaxon. And Kendall was the woman Jaxon truly loved.
Under no circumstances could Sally let Kendall catch her here.
Next second, Jaxon shoved Sally behind the door and swung it open.
Though Sally was hidden from outside view, the suddenness of his action made her whole body go rigid. She stood frozen behind the door, barely daring to breathe.
Jaxon stepped out, leaving the lounge door slightly ajar.
Sally's gaze instinctively darted to the crack in the door, catching sight of Jaxon heading for the sofa, with Kendall holding a lunchbox.
"What brings you here?" Jaxon shot her a brief glance before sinking onto the sofa.
Kendall's eyes flicked toward the lounge. After a moment's hesitation, she made her way over and took a seat across from him.
"I just happened to be passing by, so I brought you a lunch box," Kendall said, gesturing curiously toward the lounge. "But it's still this early in the morning. Why were you coming out of there?"
Jaxon replied coolly, "Worked late last night. Didn't sleep well." As he spoke, he pulled out a cigarette and lit it, his tone as calm as ever.
Kendall nodded thoughtfully, then offered the lunchbox with a gentle smile. "Now that you've had some rest, go ahead and eat. I spent an hour making this for you; it's all your favorite dishes."
Jaxon exhaled a plume of smoke and said indifferently, "You've been away from Etanlee for ages. Isn't your husband pressuring you to return?"
"I'm already divorcing him," Kendall said. "I'll have the papers by the end of this month."
Jaxon's brow furrowed slightly. "Wasn't that Korven star athlete treating you well? Why are you getting divorced?"
Kendall suddenly stood up and walked over to Jaxon. She sat down beside him and said, "Jaxon, you know exactly why I married him. It was just to spite you.
"Especially these past two years, I know I love you. And since you're still single, that's why I finally made up my mind to divorce him."
Kendall's hand had already slipped onto his chest, her fingers tracing restless circles over his shirt.
Jaxon glanced down, his eyes darkening momentarily. Kendall's feelings for him were no secret to Jaxon.
She had even resorted to drastic measures to force him into a relationship, but it only pissed him off and plunged their relationship into a stalemate for a long time.
Later, he heard the news that she'd gotten married. Yet even after tying the knot, she still wouldn't give up on him.
The door clicked shut, abruptly shattering the tense atmosphere.
Kendall's hand, which had been tracing circles on Jaxon's chest, froze mid-motion as her gaze snapped toward the lounge door with sudden alertness.
Jaxon followed her gaze, tension flickering in his eyes. The lounge door clicked shut from the inside.
"Jaxon, is there someone in your lounge?" Kendall asked, immediately standing up and moving toward the door.
But Jaxon was quicker, stepping in front of her to block her path. "No one," he said coolly. "Must have been the draft."
Kendall studied his unperturbed expression and nodded thoughtfully. "Really?"
"I have other matters to attend to. You should leave now," Jaxon said coolly. He leaned down and stubbed out his cigarette.
Seeing the faint displeasure on his face, Kendall finally nodded reluctantly. "Alright."
Only after Kendall closed the main door did Jaxon open the lounge door.
Sally sat alone on the sofa by the window, her back to Jaxon. Lost in her own thoughts, he couldn't tell what was on her mind.
Jaxon swiftly closed in, bracing his hands on either side of the sofa behind Sally. Leaning down, his gaze fixed on her profile, he asked, "That was intentional, wasn't it?"
Sally instinctively gulped, glancing over her shoulder at the man behind her. Playing dumb, she asked, "Intentional about what?"
