Sally had actually been eavesdropping on their conversation the whole time. When she heard that Kendall was going to get a divorce because of Jaxon, Sally was so shocked that her legs suddenly went weak.
She accidentally bumped into the door, causing it to close with a click.
Jaxon's hand, knuckles prominent, shot out and instantly gripped Sally's chin, forcing her to turn and face him.
His voice was icy. "Don't play dumb." His lips hovered just a breath away from hers, making her pulse race wildly again.
Sally instinctively swallowed hard. Looking at him, she asked pointedly, "Now that Ms. Harper is getting a divorce, is this exactly what you wanted?"
Jaxon's brow furrowed slightly as he gazed at her in silence, offering no reply.
Sally jerked free from his grip, turned her face sharply away, and sprang to her feet.
Jaxon straightened to his full height, his cold, indifferent gaze fixed on her.
As Sally walked past him, she said deliberately, "Some people are worth holding on to. Let them slip away, and you'll regret it forever."
She strode toward the door without so much as a backward glance.
Jaxon watched her retreating figure with narrowed eyes, a slight smirk suddenly playing on his lips.
After a brief moment, the meaning behind her words finally dawned on him. 'Did she misunderstand my relationship with Kendall?' Jaxon wondered. 'So maybe this misunderstanding isn't such a bad thing after all.'
After leaving Jaxon's executive office, Sally didn't leave right away. Instead, she went to the restroom to collect herself.
As Sally stepped out, she was startled to see a familiar face reflected in the mirror. It was Kendall.
Her eyes were incredibly deep as she looked at Sally, her gaze simmering with what seemed like hatred.
Apparently, Kendall wasn't in any hurry to leave. She must have been hiding somewhere, watching as Sally walked out of Jaxon's office.
Sally didn't say a word. She turned on the faucet and lowered her gaze, quietly washing her hands.
For some reason, when Sally learned that Kendall was divorcing for Jaxon's sake, she felt a heavy weight settle in her chest, her heart sinking lower and lower.
Sally couldn't even put that feeling into words.
"Mrs. Zale, what exactly is going on between you and Jaxon?" Kendall strode up to her, eyes flashing with a chilling menace.
Sally looked up and gave the woman in the mirror a cool, sidelong glance.
Every time Sally saw Kendall, she couldn't help but think of a porcelain doll, exquisitely crafted and picture-perfect, almost like a ballerina in a music box.
'It's no surprise Jaxon would be Kendall,' Sally thought.
Sally turned off the faucet and looked straight at Kendall. "I'm Brad's wife," she said coolly. "Didn't I already tell you that when we first met at the cell?"
Kendall snapped, "Cut the act. I saw you coming out of Jaxon's office. Don't tell me that door closed by itself. It was you, wasn't it?"
As Kendall's words hung in the air, Sally's hand froze mid-reach for a tissue.
Kendall's voice sharpened. "No one, whether overseas or here, gets into Jaxon's private lounge except Caleb. I just walked out of there myself. So if you weren't hiding in the lounge, then where exactly were you?"
"Hide?" Sally kept her head down as she wiped the back of her hand, her voice low and steady. "There's nothing improper between Mr. Zale and me. Why would I need to hide?"
"Nothing improper? If so, why were you in his private lounge?" Kendall snapped. Not even she was allowed in there, but Kendall kept that last thought to herself.
"I have things to do, and frankly, I'm just not in the mood to talk about this with you. I'll be on my way." Sally tossed the tissue into the trash bin, turned on her heel, and made to leave.
But in the next second, Kendall, who was standing beside her, suddenly seized Sally's wrist. Sally's steps came to an abrupt halt.
Sally turned to face Kendall, her voice dripping with icy disdain. "What exactly are you trying to pull, Ms. Harper?"
Kendall released her hand and leaned in, her voice dropping to a cold, threatening whisper. "Since you claim to be Brad's wife, you'd better know your place and keep your distance from him.
"I'm about to get divorced—after that, he belongs to me. So stay away."
When those words reached Sally's ears, her heart seemed to skip a beat. Sally felt a lump in her throat and couldn't get a single word out.
Especially when she thought that Jaxon might have feelings for Kendall, Sally's chest tightened painfully. That feeling was indescribable.
Kendall said with a glare, "I've heard you're divorcing Brad, but Jaxon is his uncle—not someone you have any right to set your sights on. Do I make myself clear?"
As Sally listened to Kendall's thinly veiled warning, her face turned stone cold.
After a brief pause, Sally said coolly, "If you're so fond of Jaxon, Mrs. Zale, why did you marry someone else in the first place?"
Sally had hoped to get some answers out of Kendall, but she remained tight-lipped, not letting a single word slip.
Kendall turned to the sink and began washing her hands. "It's none of your business," she snapped.
Sally ignored Kendall, casting only a cold, dismissive glance before striding out of the restroom.
It was almost eleven when Sally drove back to the clinic.
The sun was bright today, its glare reflecting off the windshield and making Sally squint.
After arriving at the clinic, Sally was in no mood to work all afternoon. She just couldn't get Kendall's words out of her head.
By the time evening finally rolled around, Sally had managed to get through the day, her mood easing up just a little.
Familiar footsteps echoed from the doorway. At the sound, Sally looked up and instantly saw Brad striding purposefully toward her.
Sally frowned slightly. "Why are you here?"
Without a word, Brad grabbed Sally by the wrist and dragged her toward the break room.
Bang. The door slammed shut with a resounding crash, the sound echoing through every corner of the clinic.
Brad shoved her down into the chair, towering over her. "Was it you who leaked Lena's scandal?"
Sally gave a cold, mocking laugh. "Who told you I did this? Lena?"
Brad said coldly, "The day Grandpa had his accident, Lena's car was sideswiped. After the police investigated, they found the driver was one of her haters—someone who already couldn't stand her.
"With this scandal on top of everything, that's what drove them to do something like this."
"Oh," Sally said with a mocking smile, "So it was her hater who did this? Well, at least they did something decent for once."
At these words, Brad stared at Sally in disbelief. "Sally, do you even hear yourself right now?"
Sally met Brad's gaze, her voice steady and cold. "I wasn't the one who exposed her scandal. If you want to make baseless accusations against me, then show me your proof. Otherwise, I'll sue you for defamation."
Sally rose to her feet, fixing him with an icy stare, her voice exceptionally low.
Brad glared at her. "Who else but you would target her like this?"
A mocking smile curled at Sally's lips. "She's been in showbiz for years. Surely I'm not her only enemy?"
A chilling frost gathered in Brad's eyes. "If I find out you did this, you'll regret it."
Sally's smirk deepened, her face now openly mocking. Three years ago, he shielded Lena at all costs even had Sally thrown in jail. And now, three years later, he was willing to go so far as to threaten Sally all for Lena again.
'What a fucking joke,' Sally seethed inwardly. She raised her head sharply. "Brad, why are you so heartless?"
