Taking a deep breath, I jumped as high as I could. I have been practicing for almost three years now, and it was perfect! If I don't say so myself!
Landing perfectly back on my two feet, I turned to look at the co-captains once again.
"Beautiful!" Jisoo clapped her hands in awe.
Kim Jisoo is the main co-captain. She is the one you want to impress during tryouts! You also need to make sure to be perfect because she knows how to make someone cry.
A grin grew on my face, "Really?!"
"Yes, sweetie! You have it all! Form your pretty face to your figure and perfect performance!" She held her hands out and then covered her mouth, "Omo! But there's one problem." She removed her hands from her face, and her smile dropped, "You are not popular."
All my excitement vanished. I'm what!?
"That is completely ludicrous!" Lisa yelled as she stood up from her chair with her hands leaning on the table.
Lalisa Manoban the 2nd co-captain. She is very strict with tryouts. She only wants the best in the cheerleading group or non at all. Also, you need to remember to smile!
"Jisoo Unnie! We have been here the whole damn day and have failed to find someone as perfect as her!" Lisa pointed her hand at me without even paying a glance.
"She has it all! You said it yourself! Yet you want to throw it all away because she's 'not popular'?!" Lisa crossed her arms in annoyance.
"I'm sorry, Lily. I made up my mind." Jisoo pursed her lips together, "We don't need the disrespect for not having someone popular!"
"That's ridiculous!" Lisa held her head in her hands, "She will become popular when she enters the group!"
"Then people will want to join the cheerleading group for fame and not just because they love it!" Jisoo answered, "I need hard workers because they want to be here. Not because they want status!" With that, Jisoo turned around and walked out of the school's inside basketball court.
Lisa sighed deeply and walked over to the small desk, "I'm sorry..." She looked at the papers, "Park Chaeyoung." She finished.
I nodded slowly.
"I don't have the final say. But if you manage to get popular before the end of tryouts, then I might be able to convince Jisoo." She hit the papers on the desk and put them into a small bag, "Fighting!" She held out her fist and walked out too, leaving me in the big, dark basketball court.
I fell to the floor with a sigh, "How the fuck am I supposed to become popular in under a month!" I hugged my legs with a pout.
The sudden creek of the basketball court's door opening stopped my thoughts. A tall man with a cap on his head entered the room and placed his big bag on the bleachers.
"Taehyung?" I thought to myself, "What is he doing here this late?"
Taehyung has also been one of my best friends since grade one. He was my only friend until we met Jennie. We three were inseparable until he joined the basketball team when we first started high school. We still talk occasionally, but he made new friends and left Jennie and me to fend for ourselves! (To put it dramatically)
We haven't talked alone in a while. I slowly got up and then noticed he was wearing earphones and his back was facing me, so I quickly ran up to him. Placing my hands on his shoulders, I jumped, and when I landed I faced his front with a grin.
"Boo!" I yelled.
I looked into shocked brown eyes- that was NOT Taehyung's!
"shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!"
"Uh, sorry, I thought you were someone else!" I ran away without looking back! That was embarrassing!
* * *
"So you didn't get in because you're not popular enough?!" Jennie was pacing around my room repeating the same thing, just wording it differently. I was lying on my bed and hugging my pillow.
"Yeah. I need help!" I looked up at Jennie with a pout, "What do I need to do?"
"Well, the movies say you should fake date a popular guy." Jennie shrugged.
Before we entered high school, we made sure to watch as many movies about high school as we could, so we knew what to expect. First off; high school is nothing like the movies. Second; I still hear Taehyung moaning about how cringy the movies were and always murmuring to himself why he ever made friends with two girls.
"I don't want to use anyone for their popularity!" I moaned, "And besides. wouldn't it be sus if I randomly broke up with him when I get into the cheerleading group?!"
Jennie nodded, "That's why you form a deal with someone, and then you can also just date for longer than a month! Maybe two?"
I hated the fact that Jennie was making it sound so easy! Come on, Chaeyoung! You have seen this movie before!
"What if I start liking the guy?" I asked.
Jennie shook her head, "Make it someone like Tae?" She held her chin, "I don't know? Just someone you know you wouldn't fall for!"
"I can't use Tae!" I bit my lower lip, "What about one of his friends?"
"Hm, Yoongi?" Jennie looked at me with wide eyes.
I shook my head, "Someone taller."
Jennie made her thinking face again, "Jungkook?" She asked.
I looked at her confused, "Jungkook?"
Jennie's eyes practically popped out of her head, "Bitch! You don't know Jeon Jungkook?! Are you living under a rock!"
I held my pillow tighter, "Uhm..."
Jennie waved her hand, "He's the new guy."
I shook my head again.
"On the basketball team?" She asked again, "Works super hard."
She stared at my black face.
"Chae!"
"I'm sorry! I've been so focused on the cheerleading group to notice anything." I buried my face in my pillow for a second.
"So you just zoned out all those times I mentioned how hot he is!?" She looked at me, offended. Suddenly I felt really bad.
I nodded slowly.
"OK! We are going to watch the team practice tomorrow!" She held her head in her hand, "Maybe we can say hi to Tae too."
"Jen, is there not another option?" I fell back and looked at the ceiling.
Jennie lay down next to me.
"I know how badly you want to be part of it. You have wanted to be a cheerleader since the day I met you." Jennie turned her face to look at me, "You will become one, Chae!"
She was right! I have wanted to be a cheerleader for as long as I can remember! Because of my mom, she didn't want me trying out until I turned 16. Here I am! I must take the chance I get!
"OK!" I sat up, "I am not letting a simple thing get in my way of achieving my dreams!"
"At it, girl!" Jennie gave me a soft punch on my shoulder, "That's the Park Chaeyoung I know!"
* * *
"So I just have to pull him aside and ask him?" I asked Jennie.
We were watching the basketball team do their last laps around the field. Jennie managed to point out Jeon Jungkook. He was attractive but not as attractive as I thought. Taehyung was more pretty!
"I'm going to leave now." Jennie tapped my shoulder, "Good luck!"
I watched her leave me and then turned my attention to the group of men walking over to the bleachers I was sitting on. I quickly stood up. "Which one's Jeon Jungkook again?!"
"Hey, pretty! Can I help you?" A tall man looked me up and down.
"Yeah, you need something?" Another man came and leaned his arm on the first. Before I knew it all the guys were asking me questions.
"I'm sorry, but have you seen Taehyung?" I tried not to sound shaky. This was the most attention I have gotten before.
"Ohhh," The first man who approached me turned around, "Yo Tae! This your girl?"
I bit the inside of my cheek. Taehyung, Yoongi, and Jungkook were now all looking at me. Taehyung walked over to me with his brows furrowed.
"Are you OK, Chae?" He asked.
I swallowed hard as he stared into my eyes.
"Ahhh her name is Chae?" One guy yelled.
"Or it's a nickname!" Another guy said.
All the men started shoving each other around.
"She's my friend, not my girlfriend!" Taehyung glared at the men when he noticed my discomfort.
"Chae?" He asked again.
"Yeah! I'll just wait a little bit." I turned around and heard a lot of noise coming from behind me, but I kept walking.
* * *
Jennie slammed her juice on the cafeteria table, "You what?!" She practically yelled.
I looked at her with my puppy eyes.
"Let me get this straight!" Jennie leaned forward, "You told him you would meet him afterward, but instead, you didn't, and you just walked to your next class!" She sighed deeply as she leaned back in her chair, "What am I supposed to do with you, Chae?"
"Ugh, I know!" I held my head in both my hands, "I just got scared with all the attention, so I panicked and called for Tae because I knew he would help me out."
"And you still haven't managed to talk to Jungkook yet?" Jennie raised her eyebrow at me, "Not even a day into our two-month plan, and you're already backing out!" She rolled her eyes.
"I know!" I bit my lower lip, "If only I can get him alone. Like without anyone!" I stared harshly at my rice.
Jennie grinned her cheeky grin.
"You remember how I said he is a hard worker?" She asked.
I nodded my head slowly.
"He does 30 minutes extra after practice." She finished.
"Then I can get him alone?!" I stood up quickly, "I have to go!"
* * *
"Damn! He is fine!" I thought to myself as I watched Jungkook and Taehyung doing laps around the court. Now that I got to see Jungkook working out, he was beginning to grow on me.
"Hey!" Taehyung stopped jogging just before they passed me, "You here finally to tell me what you wanted to say earlier?"
I looked at him with big eyes, "Actually, I wanted to talk to Jungkook."
Taehyung looked at me and then back at Jungkook, "Really?" He raised an eyebrow, "OK." His voice sounded unsteady, but he began to do his laps again.
Jungkook looked at me confused, "Look. If this is about the other day when you mistook me for someone else, I don't really care."
I bit my lower lip. "It was HIM?!"
Quickly swallowing my embarrassment, I held up my hand, "No. It's not about that."
He side-eyed me, "You're not confessing, are you?"
I shook my head vigorously, "Definitely not!"
He crossed his arms, "Good! I have had too many of those today!"
I rolled my eyes, "I just need your help with something."
"And what could I possibly help you with?!" He sounded more annoyed now.
"I need you to fake date me."
Silence.
"No."
My whole body dropped.
"Please! I need this!" I held my hands together and slightly bent my knees.
"I don't have time for that, and why the hell would you want to waste time by fake dating someone?!" He stepped back from me.
"Please, I need to get popular!" I was now on my knees, looking up at his disappointed face.
"From what I saw this morning, you don't need me to get popular." He stepped back again.
"Please!" I wined, "I will explain!" I grabbed his calf and pouted.
This time he didn't look annoyed. He looked more amused, and a smirk grew on his face.
"You know, I kind of like you pleading me like this." He said with wit.
I bit my lower lip, "What the hell are you doing Park Chaeyoung?!"
I stood up quickly and straightened out my skirt.
"Please?" I whispered.
His smirk grew wider, "Beg again."
"Why this little rat!" I bit the inside of my mouth. My dreams are big, but my pride is bigger!
"Come on!" I wined, "I'm not joking!"
He chuckled, "Me neither, sweetie."
I glared at him. We don't even know each other, and he's already acting like we're best friends!
"Tell you what." He picked up his bag from off the bleachers, "If you can give me two things. One; One super good reason that this fake dating thing benefits me," He grinned and leaned closer to my face, "And two; You beg again." He walked past me and slightly bumped my shoulder.
My life is over!
"Tae!" I ran over to Taehyung who was drinking water. I stopped right in front of him, and he held out his finger as if telling me to wait.
He gulped his water and then wiped his lips with the back of his hand, "Yes?"
"Please help me out!" I wined.
He took another swing of his water and nodded for me to go on.
"I need you to convince Jungkook to fake date me."
Taehyung spat out his water, "You what?!" He said with a croaky voice.
"I know, but I really-"
"Chae?! Why?!"
I held my breath and then sighed deeply, "I have everything to become a cheerleader. There's only one problem; I'm not popular." I bit my lower lip and stared at the ground, "Jennie and I came up with the idea of me fake dating someone popular."
Taehyung nodded slowly. He knew how badly I have always wanted to do cheerleading.
"I'll see if I can talk to him."
I looked up at him with excitement, "Really?!" I yelled before throwing myself at him in a hug, "Thank you!"
Taehyung pulled out of the hug.
"Why Jungkook specifically?" He asked, confused.
"Well, I can't choose you, we're just friends, and I don't want to make our relationship confusing."
He nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, I just feel like there aren't many options, and fake dating sounds the easiest!"
"Mkay." Taehyung grabbed his bag, "I'll talk to him." He told me as he left me alone on the court.
