Gregory raised his glass in response, all previous tenderness vanishing from his face.
With a crisp clink, father and daughter drank together.
The golden liquid shimmered like the deceptive grandeur of this celebration—beautiful on the surface, treacherous beneath.
As the party officially began, Gregory took the stage to dismiss the engagement fiasco as an unfortunate misunderstanding.
The gathered elite didn't question this explanation—they were far more interested in watching how the disgraced "murderer" would navigate this family minefield.
Sure enough, Gregory suddenly shifted topics.
"My daughter Marlow will soon be engaged to Boston business magnate Richard Blake. I hope you'll all attend the celebration."
The room erupted in shocked whispers—Richard was ten years older than Gregory himself!
"Has Mr. Reynolds lost his mind? Everyone knows Blake's sexual depravities! Not a single woman has ever left his household unscathed!"
"Exactly! I heard just last week, one girl who'd been forced into ten abortions and had her uterus removed jumped from the thirtieth floor!"
"How could he possibly give his own daughter to such a monster?"
All eyes turned to Marlow.
She appeared perfectly composed, gently setting down her glass as if this announcement had nothing to do with her.
"Marlow, are you pleased with your birthday gift? Daddy selected this match especially for you."
Gregory's eyes gleamed with malice. Trading a daughter for thirty million in prime real estate was excellent business by any standard.
Looking at the ugly expression on his face, Marlow found the situation darkly comical.
One moment playing the loving father, the next selling her to a man old enough to be her grandfather!
"Perhaps this honor should go to my sister. After all, since the Stein family rejected her, she needs a new prospect."
Jade never expected Marlow would use her as a human shield. She nearly died from humiliation.
"Marlow, Daddy is only thinking of your welfare. Don't be so difficult."
Gregory waved his hand dismissively, brooking no argument.
"A parent's decree is absolute. The marriage is settled."
Marlow laughed so hard tears formed in her eyes.
A parent's decree?
Did Gregory remember that she—Marlow—had originally been Liam's fiancée?
"If you order me to marry, I must obey? Do you think marriage laws are merely suggestions? Dad, legal ignorance isn't shameful—I'd be happy to educate you for free."
"You—!"
Publicly challenged, Gregory's face darkened. Just as he was about to explode, Victoria tugged at his sleeve, reminding him of their ultimate plan. He reluctantly backed down.
If Marlow wouldn't go willingly, he had other methods to ensure her cooperation.
The lavish birthday celebration ended on a sour note. As Marlow tried to leave, Gregory blocked her path.
"We found the token. Don't forget what you promised."
"Having second thoughts?"
Seeing Marlow's unwavering expression, Gregory's face darkened. Victoria and Jade suddenly appeared behind her, cutting off any escape route.
"You don't have a choice in this!"
Trapped like a cornered lamb, Marlow found herself bound with coarse rope, forced into a car amid taunts and jeers.
The vehicle cut through the night, speeding toward a private bank.
Marlow's blond hair whipped in the wind as she watched the three eagerly discussing how they would divide her hundred million dollar inheritance.
Inexplicably, Marlow felt a tightness in her chest, her eyes growing red.
Mother, is this the man you loved so deeply? Is this the father I once admired?
At the vault entrance, Gregory pulled out an iris scan template under Marlow's shocked gaze.
"No... that's impossible! How did you—?"
Gregory threw his head back in triumphant laughter.
"You little bitch, did you think you could outsmart your old man? All that talk about tokens was complete bullshit! I saw through your game from the beginning!"
"Once I get my hands on this billion dollars and all the property deeds, I'm going to mix your mother's ashes into cement and build a brand new tower!"
"Gregory! You'll pay for—"
CRACK!
Jade, who had been restraining herself all evening, slapped Marlow with all her might.
A sharp ringing filled Marlow's ears as she fell to the ground, her cheek swelling beneath her blond hair.
"Still running your mouth when you're about to lose everything? Do you seriously think you're still Marlow, star attorney?"
Not satisfied, Jade kicked Marlow hard in the stomach with her stiletto heel.
The empty room echoed with heavy, pained groans.
"That's enough. Our Jade will soon be the Reynolds family's only daughter—why waste energy on a convicted criminal?"
Marlow's head spun as the sound of clicking heels grew distant. Through her tangled hair, she could see Gregory trembling with excitement, barely able to hold the iris scan template steady.
Almost there...
Just a little longer...
Marlow slowly licked the blood from the corner of her mouth, dragging herself toward the wall despite the excruciating pain.
"BEEP!"
As the vault door opened, Gregory and Victoria embraced tightly, erupting in jubilant cheers.
Jade could barely contain her excitement, already envisioning mountains of wealth.
The increasingly loud celebration made Marlow's head pound. Her nails dug into the floor as she silently counted down.
The three were too caught up in their euphoria to notice her strange behavior.
With a final click, Gregory triumphantly opened the safety deposit box—
"What the hell..."
"WHERE'S MY MONEY?!"
