"Where's the money..."
"Where's the money..."
"Marlow! WHERE'S MY FUCKING MONEY?!"
Gregory's heart hammered in his chest as he frantically thrust his head into the safety deposit box, looking up and down in disbelief.
The massive vault contained nothing but a family photograph and Marlow's baby locket.
Gregory's eyes blazed red as he grabbed Marlow's collar, delivering another vicious slap. "Where's my billion dollars?! What new game are you playing now?!"
Marlow's head snapped to the side, fresh blood staining her lips.
"Who told you there was a billion dollars? Is your memory failing in your old age?"
Gregory was livid. All this effort, and all he got were these worthless items!
He ripped the locket from the box and threw it to the floor, then tore the photograph into pieces, hurling the fragments at her face.
"You're cursed just like your short-lived mother!"
"She tormented me until her death, and you're just as much of a plague!"
"Since there's no inheritance, don't blame me for what happens next! One week from now, you're marrying Blake even if I have to drag your corpse to the altar!"
He stomped on the locket several times before storming out.
Jade and Victoria vented their fury with repeated kicks, their rage impossible to contain.
A billion dollars! Most people couldn't even comprehend such a sum!
Finally exhausted, Jade spat between labored breaths.
"Acting so high and mighty, and all you had was worthless junk. You're truly pathetic."
Only after everyone left did Marlow struggle to reach for the photograph fragments and the locket, her eyes finally revealing a flicker of pain.
She wiped the blood from her hands, carefully gathering the pieces, reconstructing the portion showing her and her mother.
In the photo, Evelyn looked gentle and beautiful, though sadness perpetually lingered in her eyes.
Marlow's eyes reddened as her slender back finally buckled under the weight of her pain.
She traced her finger over the woman in the photograph, her voice trembling. "Mom, I miss you so much..."
After Evelyn's death, Gregory had burned all her possessions.
This family portrait was the only photograph of mother and daughter that remained.
Overwhelming grief spread through Marlow's chest as her pale lips quivered with soft sobs.
As the clock struck midnight, Marlow tilted her head back to hold in her tears, picking up the locket and pressing a hidden catch.
With a soft click, a compartment opened, revealing a key and a small note.
The note unfolded to reveal elegant handwriting, and her mother's familiar voice seemed to whisper in her ear: "Be kind to Marlow."
Marlow's heart lurched painfully as tears finally spilled over.
Just days ago, she had learned the truth—opening the inheritance required both father and daughter's fingerprints.
Gregory's fingerprint to open the box, Marlow's to unlock the locket.
Evelyn, gentle and virtuous to the end, knew she couldn't change her husband's heart.
She had only hoped that by offering her estate, Gregory might treat young Marlow with some kindness, sparing her from cruelty.
Marlow wiped away her tears with trembling hands, and with them, the last trace of familial warmth.
After having the key authenticated by bank specialists, Marlow firmly signed her name.
She held her mother's photo fragment against her heart while grinding Gregory's portion under her diamond-studded heel.
"Mom, from this day forward, this family will only bear the Reeves name."
