Marlow sat by the river after leaving the hospital, the evening breeze lifting her hair but failing to dispel the sorrow etched on her face.
A distant foghorn sounded, emphasizing how small and alone she appeared.
Slowly, she took out the photograph she'd carefully pieced together with tape, gently tracing her mother's face.
Suddenly, a tear fell, followed by an unstoppable deluge.
When she lost her mother as a child, she hadn't fully understood the concept of death. It wasn't until she watched other children being comforted in their mothers' arms that Marlow realized she was a child without a mother.
She clutched the photo to her chest, tears sliding down her pale cheeks, shoulders trembling with quiet sobs.
Everyone had always called her strong, but only Marlow knew that even the strongest people cry in the night longing for their mothers. During those three years in prison, it was the few precious memories of her mother that had kept her going.
Meanwhile, on the highway behind her, a black SUV drove slowly past.
Camden, exhausted after a long day of press appearances, rubbed his aching temples. Every news story about Marlow had been devastating. He'd hoped his public statement would help, but it had only pulled her deeper into the vortex of scandal...
"STOP THE CAR!"
The vehicle screeched to a halt as Camden stared in disbelief at the figure by the river. Despite still wearing his elaborate performance outfit, he immediately moved to jump out, only to be blocked by his stern-faced manager.
"What are you doing? Have you forgotten the CEO's warning? You have a packed schedule of appearances—don't create more trouble!"
Camden's brow furrowed as he firmly removed his manager's restraining hand.
"I'll take full responsibility for whatever happens."
Without another word, Camden ignored his manager's protests and leapt from the car, long legs carrying him swiftly toward the riverbank.
The closer he got to the figure in red, the faster his heart pounded in his chest.
Just as Camden gathered his courage to speak, he was horrified to see her walking directly toward the water's edge!
"Marlow!"
Eyes wide with panic, Camden lunged forward to grab her arm, terrified she was about to throw herself into the river.
Caught off guard by his sudden grip, Marlow turned to face him, tears still clinging to her lashes, instantly defensive.
"You..."
Realizing she hadn't been contemplating suicide, Camden froze, immediately releasing her hand as a flush of embarrassment colored his handsome face.
"I'm sorry. I saw you crying by the river and thought you were..."
Marlow sighed, wiping away her tears with resigned composure.
Camden's dramatic interruption had somehow diluted the overwhelming grief she'd been drowning in.
"Thank you, but I'm fine."
Her tone was even, but Camden immediately recognized the vulnerability and loneliness in her eyes.
His heart ached for her as he fought the urge to pull her into a comforting embrace.
Marlow didn't recognize him. To her, he was just a stranger...
Years ago, when he was just starting his career, he'd been tricked into signing an exploitative contract with a predatory management company. Desperate to break free but facing crippling penalties, he'd found help in Marlow, who took his case despite the minimal compensation it offered.
"Under the law, justice is immortal."
With the fall of the gavel, Marlow had also fallen directly into Camden's heart.
But for Marlow, Camden had been just another pro bono case among many.
The thought cast a shadow over Camden's expression.
Cautiously, he ventured, "Do you remember me, Marlow?"
