Bzzzz—
Marlow's phone suddenly vibrated, shattering the intimate atmosphere.
"Hello?" Marlow turned her head, avoiding Camden's intense gaze.
"Marlow, are you free tonight? I'd like to meet and talk." Liam's voice was deliberately playful, carrying a hint of seduction.
Marlow's expression instantly cooled. She gave a curt "Mmm" in agreement.
When she hung up, Camden was sulking, his eyebrows drooping like an abandoned puppy. "I thought we were having dinner together tonight?"
"Something important came up... I'll take you out another time." Marlow felt guilty, but with Liam voluntarily walking into her web, she couldn't pass up this opportunity.
Camden sighed, ultimately unwilling to make things difficult for her.
They arranged to meet again, and Marlow hurriedly departed.
Only once outside did she press a hand to her chest, taking small breaths to calm herself.
Camden's face kept flashing through her mind.
Her heart raced, and it wasn't until she glanced in the rearview mirror that she realized she was smiling.
After spending half an hour composing herself in the car, Marlow drove to the restaurant.
Liam had clearly dressed with care—his hair meticulously styled with gel, wearing a camel Prada trench coat over a simple white tee, looking both elegant and sophisticated.
Seeing Marlow approach, he immediately stood to pull out her chair.
"Remember this restaurant, Marlow? We used to come here all the time when we were dating." Liam's tone was excessively gentle.
Marlow took a sip of water, smiling without responding.
Liam was trying to use nostalgia to lower her guard—not a particularly clever tactic.
"Let's cut to the chase. Why did you want to see me?" Marlow asked coolly.
"I heard there's movement on the Meridian Plaza property," Liam poured her half a glass of water. "Has your former mentor mentioned anything to you?"
Marlow's mentor had transferred to the Bureau of Land Management years ago, and Liam knew she would have access to insider information.
At his question, Marlow allowed herself a slight smile.
"That property is scheduled for major development next quarter. Reeves Industries is determined to secure it," she said, patting the Hermès Birkin beside her. "The bidding department just gave me the tender documents. I haven't had time to review them yet."
Liam's eyes slid over the bag, his face immediately arranging itself into a solicitous smile.
"My brilliant Marlow, always ahead of the game. But working so hard worries me."
He placed his hand over hers on the table, his voice concerned. "I've always been here for you. You can learn to rely on me..."
Just as he was about to make his next move, Marlow pulled her hand away, turned to answer an incoming call, and stood to leave.
Liam watched her walk away, his expression instantly turning cold and calculating.
He grabbed Marlow's bag, rifled through it to find the tender documents, and quickly photographed the price sheets, technical parameters, and other crucial information before returning everything to its original position as if nothing had happened.
Moments later, Marlow returned, noticed the slightly disturbed bag, and smiled subtly, concealing the calculation in her eyes.
"Something's come up at the office. I need to go."
Liam put on a regretful expression. "Work comes first, I understand. We'll catch up another time."
Marlow gave a slight nod before hurrying away.
Watching her retreating figure, Liam crossed his legs arrogantly as he scrolled through the photos he'd taken, downing his wine in one gulp.
"Oh, Marlow. Smart as you are, you're still no match for me. Once I secure the Meridian Plaza project, you'll have no choice but to come crawling back."
One week later, the bidding conference officially began.
As Marlow and her secretary entered the venue, Liam approached from the opposite direction.
He sauntered over with one hand in his pocket, a smug smile playing on his lips. "Well, Marlow, feeling confident about winning this property?"
"Mr. Stein, are you hoping for a piece of the action too?"
"Absolutely, and I fully intend to win!"
"Is that so?" Marlow's lips curved upward as she waved the tender documents in front of him. "Then may the best bidder win."
Liam gave her a meaningful look before heading to the bidders' section. "I hope you won't come crying to me when it's over."
Industry insiders were divided on who would secure the project. As the recent center of attention, many bet on Marlow winning the bid.
But to everyone's surprise, when the final results were announced, Liam had beaten Reeves Industries by the narrowest of margins!
Liam laughed triumphantly, a vicious gleam in his eye. He had used all his liquid assets and even mortgaged several properties to secure this deal.
Nothing felt better than watching Marlow lose!
After the meeting, Liam intercepted Marlow, gloating shamelessly. "Who would have thought I'd win? The heavens must be smiling on me... Perhaps if you say something nice and beg a little, I might consider letting you in on the profits."
Marlow maintained a faint smile, though her eyes were filled with icy amusement.
"Since heaven has blessed you with such good fortune, be sure to hold on tight."
Liam could never have imagined that the property he'd spent his entire fortune to acquire...
Was actually worthless wasteland.
No—perhaps he was about to find out...
