A muffled groan cut through the air.
Marlow's eyes widened in shock as a figure suddenly lunged in front of her, taking the full impact of the brick!
"Camden!" Marlow screamed in anguish, watching helplessly as he crumpled to the ground.
In the next instant, she grabbed a stone from the ground and struck Lucas hard in the forehead, knocking him unconscious!
"Camden, are you okay? I'm calling an ambulance right now!" Marlow cradled him in her arms as she frantically dialed 911.
Blood poured from Camden's forehead as he shakily raised his hand to wipe away Marlow's tears.
"Don't... cry..."
Marlow bit her lip, wiping away her tears as she held him tighter.
Fortunately, the ambulance arrived quickly, followed by police who took Lucas into custody.
Looking at Camden's bandaged head in the hospital, Marlow still felt shaken.
"Don't ever do something like that again. What if something worse had happened?"
Camden smiled gently, tentatively taking her hand. "For you, I'd do anything."
Marlow's heart skipped a beat as she looked up into his eyes.
His gaze was like an ocean of affection, rippling with such sincerity that she found herself drowning in it.
The night breeze stirred the curtains by the hospital bed, and Marlow felt something stir within her heart as well.
"The mastermind is starting to show their hand," Camden said softly.
After being attacked in the parking garage, Camden had suspected it was connected to the old case.
Fearing the real culprit might target Marlow, he'd immediately contacted a private investigator and rushed to find her despite his injuries. Thankfully, he'd arrived in time...
"During the original trial, I sensed something was wrong. I believe someone else raped Rachel—Charlie, the top star at Stellar Agency."
"Charlie?" Marlow frowned. "I've heard of him—the forty-year-old triple-threat actor with massive public appeal. Why would he get involved in this mess?"
Camden instinctively wanted to smooth the wrinkle between her brows but restrained himself midway. "When you were framed and imprisoned, I was nobody. I deliberately signed with Stellar to investigate from the inside. Today, when my manager ordered me to stop the investigation, I realized he must know something and is protecting Charlie."
Marlow was stunned to learn that Camden had been working to clear her name all these years.
He had been threatened and hurt for her sake. Guilt and gratitude swelled in her chest.
"I..."
Camden read her thoughts, his voice gentle. "Don't feel pressured. Everything I did was my choice."
His selflessness only made Marlow's heart heavier.
She lowered her eyes, thinking deeply before gripping Camden's hand, her gaze intense. "Let's reopen the case together."
Camden stared at their joined hands, his eyes widening slightly.
He pressed his dry lips together before speaking carefully. "Charlie isn't an ordinary person. One wrong move, and we could both pay a terrible price. Are you certain about this?"
Marlow's eyes grew distant as she gazed at the crescent moon outside the window.
"That case was difficult partly because Rachel's profession subjected her to public prejudice. At fourteen, her father sold her virginity for $800. For five years after that, her family forced her to work in nightclubs, serving drinks and selling her body to support them."
"She once told me in tears that if she'd had a choice, she would never have entered that profession. But regardless of her job or status, I was determined to defend her basic human rights."
"Charlie may be influential, but the law doesn't bend for the powerful. I won't be intimidated by him."
Camden watched her eyes light up as she spoke of justice, his own eyes growing moist.
This was Marlow—always courageous, always willing to speak truth to power.
The Marlow he loved so deeply...
Over the next two weeks, Marlow and Camden worked together on their clandestine investigation.
Late one night at Themis Bar, Marlow reclined lazily in her chair, holding a drink in one hand while passing a report to Camden with the other.
"We've identified who called Lucas that night—it was Jade."
Camden flipped through the report, his brow instantly furrowing. "Jade and Liam collaborated to frame you three years ago. When she learned you were reopening the case, she feared exposure and tried to have you killed."
"Lucas knew the witness had been silenced and feared he'd be next," Marlow smiled, swirling her drink. "Combined with Jade's threats, he decided killing me was his best option."
Camden's expression darkened with concern.
Sensing his worry, Marlow took a deliberate sip of her drink. "Don't worry. I've prepared all the legal documents. Tomorrow I'll submit the appeal in person and simultaneously file charges against Charlie."
The bar's ambient lighting cast patterns of light and shadow across her face, but her eyes remained startlingly bright.
Camden took her hand, his voice solemn. "I'll be with you."
Marlow froze for a moment before tightly squeezing his hand in return.
This time, she didn't push him away.
The next day, Marlow and Camden went to the district court to file an appeal for the rape case, formally accusing Charlie as the true perpetrator.
The news created an immediate nationwide sensation.
When Jade saw the news, she began trembling uncontrollably, collapsing onto her sofa.
After crying for half an hour, she finally thought to call Gregory for help. In her panicked state, she drove with her mind completely clouded by fear, failing to notice a delivery truck coming around the corner—
By the time the sharp blare of the horn pierced her consciousness, it was too late to brake.
CRASH!
Jade's car flipped over. In her final moment before losing consciousness, she managed to dial Gregory's number. "Daddy... help me..."
