Back on the slopes, Sophia dropped her skis and gave Riley a vicious smile.
Her face scratches were already covered with pretty pink Band-Aids.
Meanwhile, Riley's head wound had crusted over with dried blood.
Riley tried to step around her, but Sophia moved to block her.
"See that up there, Riley? Doesn't matter that you married him. After all these years, you're still just his buddy. He doesn't love you—never has, never will. You can beg all you want, it won't change jack shit!"
Riley shoved past her, disgust dripping from her voice.
"Sophia, you destroyed my watch. This isn't over. I'm coming for you. Now get out of my way."
Sophia's teeth ground together. Then she caught sight of something behind Riley and her smile turned predatory.
"Oh, that ugly old thing? God, I should've thrown it in a trash compactor so you'd never see it again!"
Riley's eyes went cold and dangerous.
But she didn't take the bait and slap her again.
Seeing Blake getting closer, Sophia got desperate.
She shoved Riley hard.
Riley, standing right at the edge of the slope, tilted backward.
In the next second, she grabbed Sophia's jacket and they both went tumbling down the steep incline.
Sophia's screams pierced the air as they rolled.
But she was wearing all the protective gear—even a bad fall wouldn't really hurt her.
Riley, instead, without all the padding, was in agony. Pain shot through every inch of her body. Her arm was twisted at a wrong angle, bringing tears to her eyes instantly.
When Blake came running down, Riley instinctively reached for him like she always had.
"Blake, I think my arm is—"
"Riley, who the fuck do you think you are? I warned you to stay away from her, and you keep hurting my girl!"
He cut her off, his voice full of rage.
Her lips trembled, but no words came out.
Blake had already turned away, scooping up the sobbing Sophia.
Waves of pain crashed through Riley's body, making her shake uncontrollably. Her heart felt like it was being carved out with a rusty knife.
Blake started to walk away with Sophia in his arms.
"Blake, what am I to you?"
Not a friend. Not a lover. Not even one of his hookups.
What was she?
Blake hadn't looked at her once this entire time.
Until she asked that question.
His cold stare cut through her like a blade.
"You? You're nothing."
His figure got smaller and smaller until he disappeared completely.
Her vision started to blur as consciousness slipped away. Riley passed out from the pain.
When she woke up, she was in a hospital bed.
Marcus looked terrible—his face was grim, but his eyes were filled with concern when he looked at her.
He seemed to struggle with what to say before finally speaking.
"Riley, you and Blake are still young. You guys can have more kids."
Riley was eerily calm.
Her eyes were completely empty.
Marcus pressed his lips together, looking uncomfortable.
"Blake's driving over now. He'll be here soon."
At the mention of Blake's name, Riley's eyelashes fluttered once.
She sent Marcus away and made a phone call.
It didn't take long for someone to call back.
Then she slipped out of the hospital without telling any of the staff.
Outside, a black sedan was waiting for her.
She got in without hesitation.
She would never have Blake's child now.
In fact, she and Blake...
There was no future left.
