While Sophia was still processing what just happened, Blake had already gotten dressed and left.
He pulled out his phone to call Riley.
But then that question from the ski resort echoed in his head.
Blake massaged his temples and shoved the phone back in his pocket.
He wanted a wife who stayed in her lane and didn't cause drama.
Not someone who'd monitor his every move, get jealous about other women, or bitch at him for staying out late.
He'd married Riley because she was his "buddy."
She fit all his requirements for the perfect wife, which is why he'd chosen her.
Sure, he knew Riley had a thing for him, but she'd always kept that baggage to herself.
Then Sophia showed up, and suddenly Riley was crossing lines she'd never crossed before.
It annoyed the hell out of him.
That's why he'd been harder on her lately.
But other than that, Riley satisfied him in every way—physically and otherwise.
So even though Blake was into Sophia now, he'd never seriously considered divorce or replacing Riley.
Riley just needed to be put in her place for a while.
When he saw her next, hopefully she'd be back to her usual agreeable self.
Blake pocketed his phone.
He turned around and headed to the office instead.
The next day, Blake was supposed to take Team A on a business trip.
But Sophia was two hours late and still hadn't shown up at the airport.
The Team A members huddled behind Blake, unable to keep their complaints to themselves.
"Last meeting, she kept us waiting three hours, said like two words, then just vanished!"
"You think that's bad? I took her to a client dinner Wednesday and she spent the whole time showing off her jewelry, telling the client hers was fake. The woman was beyond pissed."
"She only pulls this shit because our boss lets her get away with it. When Riley was in charge, everything ran smooth. Now Team A is a total joke—thanks to one person screwing it up for everyone."
Just as they finished venting, Sophia appeared with a heart-shaped lunch box.
Blake's face was stone as she approached with that fake-sweet smile.
"Blake, sorry I'm late! I didn't want you getting hungry on the plane, so I made you a special lunch."
Blake didn't say a word or reach for the box.
His assistant rushed over looking frantic.
"The flight tickets are for the wrong date. It's too late to change them now."
Everyone exchanged glances, but nobody dared speak seeing Blake's expression.
Sophia immediately burst into tears. "How is that possible? I bought them for today!"
Her tears fell like worthless pearls.
Blake just felt irritated watching her cry.
He used to think Sophia's whole helpless act was cute.
Now fury was building in his chest like pressure in a volcano.
"All you do is fucking cry. Useless!" Blake snapped before storming away.
The Team A members watched Sophia's meltdown with obvious glee.
Mortified, Sophia scrambled after him.
"Blake, wait! This isn't all my fault—those people have always had it out for me. They're still pissed I took Riley's spot, so they didn't warn me about the ticket dates on purpose. They wanted me to look like an idiot in front of you!"
"Blake, Riley's been plotting against me this whole time! She keeps trying to hurt me and push me away from you because she's scared of losing her position. When her other schemes didn't work, she got the team to gang up on me! You have to believe me!"
Blake stopped dead in his tracks.
A cold smile crossed his face.
"So you're saying Riley made you constantly late? Riley made you piss off our clients? Riley made you book the wrong flights?"
Sophia looked at his expression, unable to read whether he believed her or not.
But remembering how protective he'd been of her before, she forced herself to nod.
"Who else would it be? Blake, she's the mastermind behind everything! She's terrified I'll take her place as Mrs. Harrison, scared you'll pick me over her, so she's been sabotaging me nonstop! I know I don't have her status or power, but I'm still a person!"
"Fine, I'll give her back the supervisor job if that's what it takes. I swear I would never intentionally hurt the company!"
She spoke with conviction, wiping her tears while tugging at Blake's sleeve pitifully.
Blake let out a harsh laugh, his smile cold and mocking.
"You said it, not me. Report to HR tomorrow. You're starting from the bottom."
He yanked his arm away from her grip.
Sophia stared at him through her tears, completely bewildered.
Wasn't he supposed to distrust Riley?
Every time she'd set Riley up before, he'd taken Sophia's side without question.
Why wasn't Blake backing her up this time?
