The day we got together, our company landed the biggest deal we'd ever had.
After we walked the clients out, Jace grabbed me and spun me around like a damn rom-com.
"Sloane, you killed it! This is it! We're making it, baby!"
Everyone was cheering, and right there in front of the whole team, he told me he loved me.
I blushed like a damn teenager and nodded.
Over the next few years, we moved from a sketchy strip mall office in the suburbs to a high-rise downtown.
Our little seven-person startup turned into a company with over two hundred employees.
It wasn't until our third year together that I even heard of Blaire.
She was his college ex.
Same age, two years of young, stupid love.
But after graduation, she met some rich guy and peaced out—left Jace behind to chase a better life.
Maybe that's what lit the fire under him.
Maybe losing her is what pushed him to take a risk and start the company.
And yeah, it worked out. He won the damn bet.
He once told me, "Honestly, I should thank her."
"If she hadn't dumped me, I'd probably be stuck at some boring nine-to-five, barely scraping by."
He said it with this casual shrug, like he was totally over it.
So I believed him.
I trusted him.
Blaire was never a threat in my mind.
We all have a past. And hers wasn't exactly classy.
But now?
Now I realize I was just stupid.
