I went straight home to pack.
After all these years together, it was basically a marriage.
Just no paper.
I was zipping up my suitcase when the front door clicked open.
He saw the bags and froze.
"Sloane, just—just let me explain."
I dropped the suitcase and crossed my arms.
"Go ahead. I'm all ears."
He opened his mouth…
Then closed it again.
Long pause.
And then he said it.
"Sloane… let's get married."
I burst out laughing.
Not even trying to hide the venom in my voice.
"Jace, we've known each other for eight years.
What makes you think I'm the kind of woman who recycles trash?"
He flinched, face full of shame.
"I don't want to lose you."
I stared at him.
"How long, Jace? How long has it been going on?"
His eyes lit up like he saw a crack in the door.
"There's nothing going on. I swear. It never started."
And just like that, I was done.
"You know what? If you'd owned it, I might've respected you.
But this pathetic lying? It's disgusting."
I picked up the suitcase and walked out.
Behind me, I heard his voice.
"Sloane! I'm not letting you walk away!"
I didn't turn back.
Didn't say a word.
I made it out the front door—and that's when the dam broke.
Tears just… exploded.
God, it hurt.
Eight years.
Eight years, and I really believed he was my forever.
I loved that man with every goddamn piece of me.
All those memories flashed through my head like a damn slideshow.
"Sloane, when the company hits it big, you'll be our legend."
"Sloane, I sleep at night because you're around."
"You'll be the only woman I ever marry. No one else even comes close."
"Sloane, I'll protect you. Always."
And now?
Now he was the one I needed protecting from.
You shattered eight years, Jace.
You ripped it all apart.
My chest hurt so bad I couldn't breathe.
Crying that hard felt like drowning.
The pain wrapped around my skull, squeezing so tight I thought I might pass out.
I didn't even know it was possible to cry so hard you puke, but there I was—bent over in a flowerbed,
Tears, snot, bile all pouring out of me.
And yeah, it was ugly.
It was humiliating.
But that was heartbreak.
That was what losing your whole damn world looked like.
Everything—work, life, love—had been with him.
Leaving Jace felt like someone had ripped a piece of my soul out with their bare hands.
And just when I thought it couldn't get any lower…
My phone buzzed.
A DM from Blaire.
"Jace said, thanks to me showing up again, he finally feels alive."
