Author's POV:-
โ€œArjun ji, aap neeche kya kar rahe hain? Itne acche se bistar theek karke gaye the dono ke liye... aur aap neeche so rahe hain?โ€ Sakshi asked as she stepped into the room, her voice soft but clearly surprised.
(โ€œArjun ji, what are you doing down here? I made the bed so nicely for both of us and now youโ€™re sleeping on the floor?โ€ )
Arjun looked at her while listening to some old 80's Hindi songs on the radio.
โ€œUpar uth jaiye na... aap Lata ke paas so jaiye,โ€ she insisted gently.
(โ€œPlease come upโ€ฆ you can sleep next to Lata,โ€)
He quietly switched off the radio. โ€œUpar tu aur Lata ek saath so ja... main yahin neeche thik hoon,โ€ he said flatly.
(โ€œYou and Lata sleep together on the bedโ€ฆ Iโ€™m fine down here.โ€)
โ€œJi? Kaisi baatein kar rahe hain aap? Mujhe sone dijiye neeche, mujhe aadat hai,โ€ she said, picking up the extra blanket from the chair.
("Jii ?? What are you saying? Let me sleep downโ€ฆ Iโ€™m used to it,โ€)
He shook his head firmly. โ€œSakshi, mujhe bhi aadat hai... maine kaha na, tu upar soh jaa,โ€ he said in a low voice, his expression unchanging. Her face fell at his words.
(โ€œSakshiโ€ฆ Iโ€™m also used to it. I am telling you na, you sleep on the bed,โ€)
โ€œDadi mujhe kaccha chaba jaayengi agar aapko aise dekh liya toh,โ€ she muttered, reluctantly climbing onto the bed.
(โ€œDadi will eat me alive if she sees you like this,โ€)
He heard it but pretended not to.
Sakshi gently covered Lata with a thick blanket. The little one was already deep in sleep. Then she turned to face Arjun, her pout visible even in the dim light. It didnโ€™t sit right with her that he was sleeping on the cold floor while she and Lata took the bed.
โ€œWoh bistar thoda chhota ho gaya teeno ke liye...โ€ she murmured guiltily.
(โ€œThis bed became a little small for the three of usโ€ฆโ€)
He glanced up at her, โ€œTu phir se wahi baat pe atki hai? Kuch chhota nahi hai. Teri yeh kamra bohot hi achha hai...โ€
(โ€œYouโ€™re are still stuck on this topic?? Nothingโ€™s smallโ€ฆ your room is really niceโ€ฆโ€)
She smiled, the sound of her payals tinkling as she moved.
His gaze wandered to the top of the almirah, where a collection of small dolls sat.
โ€œYeh sab tere hain?โ€ he asked, gesturing toward them.
(โ€œAre these yours?โ€)
Her eyes followed his and she nodded, โ€œYeh sab mitti ke bane hue hain... maa ne banaye hain.โ€
(โ€œThese are made of clayโ€ฆ Maa made them.โ€)
Arjunโ€™s brows lifted in surprise. โ€œYeh sab haath se bana hua hai?โ€
(โ€œThese are handmade?โ€)
She giggled. โ€œHaan... sab haathon se. Achhe hain na?โ€
(โ€œYes, all handmade. Arenโ€™t they nice?โ€)
โ€œBohot hi acche hain... teri maa toh kamaal karti hain,โ€ he murmured, still staring at the handcrafted dolls.
(โ€œTheyโ€™re really beautifulโ€ฆ your maa makes them so well,โ€)
A silence settled in, comfortable yet filled with unsaid emotions. Suddenly, Sakshi had an idea. Grinning to herself, she picked up her pillow and began climbing down from the bed.
โ€œAb kya kar rahi hain? Kahan jaa rahi hain?โ€ he asked, confused.
(โ€œWhat are you doing? Where are you going?โ€ )
โ€œAap thoda side hatiye na... mujhe neeche utarna hai,โ€ she said, still grinning.
(โ€œ Can you please move a little jii??โ€ฆ I need to get down,โ€)
He shifted his legs to give her space. โ€œPar jayegi kahan tu?โ€
(โ€œBut where are you going?โ€)
She stepped downโ€”only to trip over her saree. โ€œAaa...!โ€ she yelped, landing right on top of him with a thud, accidentally hitting his face with the pillow. He groans loudly. His hands instinctively grabbed her waist to steady her.
โ€œSorry ji..aapko laga kya??โ€ she gasped, hurriedly tossing the pillow away. She started to caress his face worriedly.
("Sorry ji?? Did you get hurt??")
He opened his eyes slowly. โ€œKarni kya chahti hai tu pehale yeh bata mujhe..โ€
(โ€œWhat are you trying to do?โ€)
She nervously licked her lips. โ€œWoh... kya hai na... aapke paas sona hai ji,โ€ she said sheepishly.
("Jii .. actually I want to sleep next to you...")
His brows rose as now he slowly wrapped his arms around her waist more comfortably. She placed her both hand on his chest.
โ€œAchha? Mere paas sona hai? Agar galti se tere saath raat ko kuch galat kar liya toh?โ€ he teased, pulling her slightly closer.
(โ€œReally? You want to sleep next to me? What if I end up doing something wrong with you by mistake in the middle of the night??โ€)
She gazed at his face, smiling softly. โ€œAap kuch galat kar hi nahi sakte mere saath...โ€
(โ€œYou could never do anything wrong to me.โ€)
His teasing faded, and in the next moment, he gently rolled her down onto the mat and leaned above her.
โ€œItna bharosa hai mere upar?โ€ he asked, his tone quieter now.
(โ€œYou trust me that much?โ€)
She chuckled and cupped his beard cladded cheek with tenderness. Her eyes welled up with tears.
โ€œKyunki aap mere baba jaise bilkul bhi nahi hain...โ€
(โ€œBecause youโ€™re nothing like my babaโ€ฆโ€)
His smile slowly disappeared as her words sank in. She gently touched the corners of his eyes, where little wrinkles formed whenever he smiled. He definitely looked cute with them.
โ€œTu ro kyu rahi hai?โ€ he asked as he wiped away a tear escaping her eye.
(โ€œWhy are you crying Sakshi??")
She shook her head, not trusting her voice. He gently brushed her baby hairs off her face.
โ€œSoch rahi hoon... kaash maa ko bhi aapke jaise ek pati milta... toh aaj unhe itna dukh nahi sehna padtaโ€ she whispered, adjusting the mat to make space for him.
(โ€œI was just thinkingโ€ฆ if only my mother had a husband like you, she wouldnโ€™t have suffered so much,โ€)
He pulled her into his chest as she wiped her tears with the back of her hand.
โ€œWoh shayad acche pita honge... par bilkul bhi acche pati nahi thein... bilkul bhi nahi hain...โ€ she mumbled, his warm embrace comforting her.
(โ€œHe might be a good fatherโ€ฆ but definitely not a good husband jii,โ€)
He stayed quiet. He understood what she meant. He had more painful memories than her.
โ€œSab insaan ek jaise nahi hote, Sakshi... agar hote, toh humari maaon ko itna kasht nahi jhelna padta,โ€ he said, lost in his thoughts.
(โ€œNot all people are the same, Sakshiโ€ฆ if they were, our mothers wouldnโ€™t have had such tough lives,โ€)
She looked up at him gently. โ€œAap apni maa ke baare mein soch rahe hain?โ€ she asked softly.
(โ€œWhat are you thinking about? Your maa??")
He didnโ€™t say yes nor did he deny it but simply closed his eyes and continue patting her back silently.
โ€œAapki maa har waqt aapke paas hain ji... please aap royiye matโ€ she whispered, her own voice breaking.
(โ€œYour maa is always with you, jiโ€ฆ please donโ€™t cryโ€ฆโ€ )
He shook his head. โ€œMain nahi ro raha, Sakshi... bas kabhi kabhi lagta hai... agar jaldi thoda aur bada ho jata .. toh shayad apni maa ko bacha sakta tha...โ€
(I donโ€™t cry, Sakshiโ€ฆ itโ€™s just sometimes I feelโ€ฆ if I had grown up a little sooner, maybe I could have saved my maaโ€ฆโ€)
His words made her freeze.
โ€œKya kaha aapne...? Maa ko... kya hua tha?โ€ she asked, raising her head.
(โ€œWhat did you say, ji? What happened to your mother?โ€)
โ€œKuch nahi... so ja tu. Raat bohot ho gaya hai,โ€ he said, avoiding her question.
(โ€œNothingโ€ฆ go to sleepโ€ฆ itโ€™s really late now,โ€)
She sighed and snuggled back into his chest. She didnโ€™t push further. Something told her he wasnโ€™t ready.
But she now understood something deeply:
This man... loved his mother fiercely.
And something terrible had happened โ€” something he couldnโ€™t forget... or forgive.
โ€œUtna dimaag mat chala... aankhen band kar aur so ja,โ€ his voice startled her suddenly.
(โ€œStop overthinkingโ€ฆ close your eyes and sleep,โ€)
She squeezed her eyes shut snuggling into his neck by wrapping her arms around him.
How did he always know... even with his eyes closed... that she was still awake?
