                    Her Other Half
Looking at Sasha was the most peaceful feeling in the world. She looked so pretty and different. She had blue eyes, blonde hair and an angelic face. Yuri watched her fingers lift up and touch hers, finding herself unable to breath in the situation. She was here, Yuri realized. Sasha was right in front of her.
“I have something to tell you” Sasha confronted.
But all Yuri could see was Sasha’s lip moving, with no words coming out of it. The darkness that surrounded them aggressive and evil, but they stood facing each other like it was most precious gift. Yuri knew in her heart that the girl that stood before her was the girl of her dreams.
Yuri could touch her, listen to her, see her but mostly she wondered if Sasha would allow, Yuri to love her.
It had been a split second but a million thoughts ran in Yuri’s mind before she could react. Without further thought Yuri leaned in and grabbed Sasha by her waist and locked her lips with hers. Love is the most powerful feeling in the world. It can turn good from bad, happy from sad but most of all it can unite and fix a broken person.
Yuri was lost for a while even though she had her own way of suppressing it. Life was nothing like that, ever since Sasha had come along. The kiss proved it; Yuri felt butterflies in her stomach. She never thought it was possible to want someone this much. She felt Sasha return her kiss, as their bodies glued to each other. Everything felt right, Yuri had Sasha buried in her arms, and that was all she ever wished for. As their lips parted, Yuri looked at Sasha again. If it was a staring competition, Yuri was surely winning. She was consumed by Sasha. So much, that she hadn’t even realized why she was here facing Sasha in the first place.
“You are unconscious” Yuri whispered.
“Yes, I haven’t eaten anything today, I must’ve . . “ Sasha began explaining.
“You’re - - un- conscious. You have to wake up!” Yuri raised her voice. Realization began to hit her, and her eyes flooded in tears. “You have to wake up, Sasha” Yuri shook Sasha’s shoulders. Even fainting had its perks, Yuri was able to see Sasha, but then it was time for Sasha to wake up.
Would she?
*BLANK*
“WAKE UP!” A voice screamed in my ear. My eyes hesitated to open but of the sudden brightness. So it was one eye that lifted up. I could see Belle leaning her head on Jason’s shoulders.
What the - -?
Just as both of my eyes opened, Jason lifted me up and laid me down on the bed.
“What happened?” I choked a bit as I asked them.
“You fainted, then you stopped breathing for one whole minute” Jason muttered. He looked like he was scarred for life. Belle approached me and hugged me. I felt tear drops fall onto my T-shirt while I stroked her hair slowly.
“I’m fine, I just didn’t eat. That’s why my body gave up a bit” I replied quietly remembering Yuri’s kiss. I hadn’t forgotten what happened while I was unconscious. Instead I could remember every moment of it.
“Let’s get you something to eat then” Jason hurried downstairs to prepare food. Belle laid her head on my tummy and sniffled.
“I thought you were going to die” She sobbed hugging me tightly.
“I am going to die” I reminded her. It’s not something any of us was going to get used to but in one month’s time, I would be gone. I needed to start accepting it.
“Don’t say that!” Belle sobbed more. “I don’t want you to go”
“Everyone eventually dies, Belle. “ I whispered to the thin air. I felt a tear drop from my eyes. I wished I could console her, but nothing I say will erase the fact that I had a brain tumor and my time limit is just one month.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
“I’m not going to tell her” I said loudly drinking the last of my soup. Considering Jason, the soup was well made and I was full.
“Not going to tell who? Mrs. Williams or Yuri?” Jason asked taking the rest of the plates back to the kitchen.
“Both” I replied, almost making Belle choke on her drink.
“What? Why? You have to tell them!” Belle protested. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her about the little meeting I had with Yuri. But there were many reasons why I decided not to tell Yuri or her mom about her condition.
“Firstly, I trust Dr. Nick and if he says it’s a month, then it’s a month. Secondly, if I tell Yuri about her sickness, she’d probably worry more about me than herself. I’ve seen her suffer enough, I’ve seen her mom suffer every day to be able to pay the bills and pay for school. That precious one month that Yuri gets, would be wasted in hospitals to see if there’s another way. Doctors will give her medicines after medicines. Her last memories would be on a hospital bed, with medicines that won’t cure her but make her weaker day by day. She’ll die as a weak person but not the strong person that she really is. I won’t allow that shit to happen”
“If you want her to be strong, she needs to fight this thing” Belle protested again.
“That’s where you’re wrong Belle. Being strong is not just about fighting this thing to the end and suffer all the way until that small little life she could’ve had, gets snatched away because of the damn medicines. Being strong is being ready for anything to happen, even death. I’ll give Yuri the life she’s craving for. I’ll tell her when it’s the right time, and when death comes, she’ll know that she won’t be alone”
“Sasha, you have to tell her mom at least. You have to!”
“I know that I do. But not now, I will tell her when the right time comes” I made my final decision and I won’t change my mind. Belle stared at me, wanting to say something back but she didn’t. Her lips pursed as she held back everything she wanted to say to me.
“What’s your plan then? How are you going to make Yuri forget everything? Jason asked coming back to the sitting room with a soda can in his hands. I stared at the two sanest people in the room while they listened to the insane one reply.
“I am going to start dating Yuri”
There I said it. I looked down expecting one of them to start screaming, but no one did. They just stood in front of me and stared at me. I let out a small breath; it was the only way I could make Yuri happy and forget about what would happen in a months’ time.
“Did you guys hear me?” I asked them, still expecting someone to blast.
“We heard you” Belle sighed.
“So . . .” I tried to get them to ask but it took a while for them to talk back again.
“I couldn’t agree more with you” Jason replied. He didn’t look like he was joking, and he sounded dead serious.
“I think it’s a good idea” Belle nodded. I stared back at them with disbelief. It wasn’t a plan; I wasn’t going to break Yuri’s heart. I would stand with her, protect her and be there for her. My priority was Yuri, and she will always be, but it wasn’t only me who stood by her side. Belle and Jason had her back too and I was glad.
“Well okay then” I said feeling embarrassed. It was almost eleven, and Mrs. Williams could show up at any time. It was Belle’s and Jason’s cue to leave but none of them did.
“I’ll stay with you tonight, since you fainted. I don’t think it’s okay for you to sleep alone” Belle suggested. I couldn’t blame her for wanting to sleep next to me. Given our history together, Belle would be devastated to know that in one months’ time I’ll be gone for good and so is Yuri.
“I don’t think Yuri would like that very much” I replied to her and Belle nodded in realization.
“I’ll sleep next to you” Jason blurted out. “Yuri would be fine with me; I’ll sleep on the floor and check up on you every hour”
“I don’t think Mrs. Williams would like that very much” Yuri still hasn’t told her mom about the whole lesbian thing.
“Well someone has to check if you’re breathing at night” Jason confessed sadly. I felt my throat tighten by his words.
“I’ll be fine. I promise. It was just because of hunger. I’ll text you both in the morning to let you know I’m fine. Okay?” I comforted my most trusted friends. Friends, that’s what they are now. Maybe our histories were the reason why I could rely on them now.
After I sent them away, I returned to my room and decided to send a video update to Yuri. This was it, I was going to tell her that I am ready to be her girlfriend, and that she wasn’t crazy to fall in love with me. I didn’t think it was a foolish idea, I thought it was brilliant. I could finally be what Yuri wanted me to be her. Literally Her Other Half.
“Hey Yuri, so as you heard, I fainted. I am so sorry that I had been so neglectful about your body lately. It’s not your fault, it’s all mine and I take full responsibility. Jason made tasty soup tonight and I feel more alive than I ever did” I paused for a moment trying to hold back the tears from falling. I had to be strong, for her. I had to!
“I don’t know how I was able to see you today but I’m glad I did. You looked so pretty, and everything felt so heavenly; even the kiss. I don’t know if you remember us meeting when I was unconscious, but I remember the moment so vividly. I guess what I’m trying to say is that we’ve been through a lot together, and maybe I might’ve neglected and rejected your feelings because of the whole Riley mess and Belle coming back. But deep down you must know how much I care for you. I’d give up my life for you. And I don’t understand what it was that you do to me, but that kiss made all sense in the world. I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it because I did. And I want to make you happy, because that’s what‘ve always wanted for you, always to be happy. I was so drawn towards you from the beginning, I’ve always wondered why. I guess you gave me one reason why. So basically, the whole point of this video is to tell you that I still think you’re crazy, but right now you’re my crazy and I am yours”
Just as I finished recording, I realized one thing. I had always wondered what my purpose was. Why I had come into Yuri’s life? What is the reason for my existence?
This was it.
Yuri was dying, even though she didn’t know it. I found my purpose. I knew why I came to her life. I knew why I always had the compulsion to protect and always be at her side. For once in my life, I knew I could do this right.
