A Little Optiminism in a Pesimistic World
“Where’s my speech?” Jason complained again placing a bouquet of roses in the vase. The hospital room that Yuri was admitted in, did not look like one at all. It was decorated while Yuri was asleep. After Whitney’s little visit, Yuri was overwhelmed and shocked. Not only it was awkward but before Whitney left, she kissed her forehead making stuff even weirder.
“Earth to Yuri, my speech, please?” Jason sat down and looked at her annoyed. Ever since Yuri had included Jason in her wish list, he wouldn’t stop demanding her for his speech.
“I’ll give it to you, I promise” Yuri promised.
“You’re Wish list is weird. Like for example Wish list Number 7: Become a part of a great cause? What the hell does that mean?” Jason stared at the piece of paper with Yuri’s wish list. It was lame to even have one, but at the time it seemed appropriate.
“I’ve always wanted to donate money to poor kids, but since I don’t have any, maybe all the dresses in my closet, after I am gone? I just want to be remembered you know. Like Yuri Williams, the legend” Yuri acted dramatically in front of Jason who looked confused.
“Why on earth do you think you won’t be remembered? And you should stop thinking about death and this lame wish list because you are not dying. I won’t let that happen”
“You’re not in control of death, Jason. Death cannot be avoided” Yuri whispered back.
“This is the reason why I told you not to watch Final Destination 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5” Jason shot back defending himself. “Even if you were to leave, which won’t happen, there’s no way you’d be forgotten. Why do you think you won’t be remembered?”
“Because all I’ve ever done is bad stuff. I’ve been mean and hateful; I just wish I could change that part of me. I wish I could just go back but I can’t. There are ten wishes Jason, and I have two weeks. So if I can’t complete them by then, you need to continue fulfilling the rest”
“Gee Yuri, that’s not stressful at all” Jason sarcastically.
“You’ll do it, right? For me?” Yuri placed a small kiss on Jason’s hand. There was an awkward silence between them, Jason smiled lightly while tucking back her hair. “If everyone had a Jason Haynes in their lives, everything would be nice” Yuri thought.
“Okay so, how in the world did you manage to Whitney to like you?” Jason cleared his throat as he asked. The talk about death was not only giving Yuri the chills.
“I have no idea; I am as uncomfortable as you are”
“It’s weird now, Belle likes Sasha, Sasha likes you, Whitney likes you but you like Sasha. It seems like girls don’t need men anymore”
“How about Vicky Styles?” Yuri rolled her eyes as she asked.
“If I didn’t have a strict policy in not beating up girls, I would have beaten her up by now” Jason growled as he spoke. As the room once again got silent, Yuri began to wonder where her mom was.
“Have you seen mom?” Yuri lifted her head to see if Mrs. Williams was outside. But she could not hear her voice or see her. There was no way Mrs. Williams would leave her now and go to work or a date. Right?
“Did you see Sasha lately?” Jason asked ignoring her question.
“Jason, where’s my mom?”
“I have no idea”
“What do you mean, you have no idea. You’re practically here 24 hours.” Yuri crossed her arms in anger. Jason was clearly lying and Yuri knew it.
“She’s err . . . with Nick and Dr. Colton” Jason scratched his head carelessly.
“What is she doing with them?” Yuri coughed. Two weeks might seem a long time but Yuri already felt her body weakening.
“You need rest, Yuri” Jason tried to change the subject while tucking her blanket to make her seem more comfortable but something was going on and Yuri was going to find out what.
“Tell me what my mom is talking to them about, NOW JASON HAYNES”
“Alright, alright. She wants them to operate on you” Jason finally manages to spit out the words. He rubbed his hands on Yuri’s fingers. Yuri was calm at first mostly because she didn’t know how to respond.
“But, why? If they operate on me, I’ll die”
“There is a 97% of dying but 3% chance of survival. Mrs. Williams is counting on that 3%. You might make it out alive” Jason smiled, but his eyes were filled with tears.
“If they operate on me now, I might die on the table Jason but if they don’t, I still have two weeks left until my body gives out. Why does she want to risk that?” Yuri blurted out the obvious.
“Because you’ll be in a lot of pain in these last two weeks Yuri. Nobody wants to see you suffer.”
“So you guys just want to end my pain nice and quick by bringing me to death, huh” It’s not that Yuri didn’t understand why they’d want the operation more than the two weeks. That 3% was a lot to depend on, that 3% was too much, too little.
“It’s not that! Don’t you ever say that! We’re trying to find a way instead of sitting around and waiting for a miracle that’s never going to happen”
“You’re right, I’m sorry. I just can’t wrap my mind around it yet. I’ll need to talk to Sasha first. It’s her body too; she has a right to speak on its behalf” Not seeing Sasha or hearing from her panicked Yuri. She needed to hear Sasha’s opinion about the operation.
“Fine, just think about it. They can schedule the operation day after tomorrow and we’ll pray that you be one of the 3%”
“What if I am one of those 97%? What then?” Yuri whispered.
“You won’t be, you’ll make it!”
“Optimism doesn’t suit you, Haynes”
“And pessimism doesn’t suit you, Williams”
“I need to have a word with Sasha, but I don’t know how I can meet her. I can’t switch to her either because of the drugs they’ve been injecting me with” Yuri whispered quietly. It saddens her how she couldn’t see the one person she needed to be with.
“I’ll tell her if she shows up, and I brought the camera so she could give you her final video update”
“Well, okay then.” Yuri tried not to think about the operation, so she took out her pen and started writing on her journal. It was one of the things that brought her clarity.
“What are you writing on that thing? You’ve been at that the whole day” Jason tried to peep but Yuri pushed him away. He didn’t have to know, not just yet.
“You’ll know soon” Yuri grinned.

“Operation? She wants to do the operation?” I muttered still holding in my breath. I stared at Jason who was now begging me to be okay with it. I should be honest, it wasn’t like I hadn’t considered it but the risk I’ll be putting Yuri made my mouth shut.
“3% chance, that’s all we’ve got. Or else Yuri would be in pain, so much pain”
“I get it, I do. The operation makes perfect sense.” I blurted out trying not to sound like it’s still a good idea.
“Dr. Colton would be operating and Nick will be assisting him” Belle replied. She just stood there lifelessly staring at me.
“Day after tomorrow? And Mrs. Williams is on board too?” I asked again feeling vulnerable. It’s not that death scared me; it’s just that the death of Yuri terrifies me. I love her and it just seems unfair.
Jason nodded slowly.
“I’m cool with it then, let’s do this operation. I want to see her get better. I have faith in the doctors and in Yuri. She’ll make it” I replied enthusiastically. I poured the only ounce of positivity left in me in that sentence.
“But . . .” Jason began.
Of course there was a but.
“Nick explained the procedure to us thoroughly, if Yuri survives this operation, with the tumor out she’ll be free of her Dissociative Identity Disorder”
“Oh” I bit my tongue hard trying not to think about what Jason had just said. So that meant “If Yuri survives, I die and if Yuri dies, I still die”
Jason and Belle nod slowly in unison. Belle burst out crying while embracing me in her arms. Jason stares at the ground trying his best not to seem less of a man. And like I said before I wasn’t afraid of death, in fact I was ready for it but as long as Yuri made it.
“It’s okay, she’s better off without me anyway” I spat out coldly.
“If Yuri knows about this, I don’t think she will agree to do the operation” Belle sighed.
“I know, which is why we won’t be telling her. Just tell her I’m on board and that I love her”
“Why don’t you say it yourself?” Jason handed me the camera which reminded me that this was the last time I’ll be sending her a video update. I waited till both Jason and Belle left the room to give me some privacy. I held the camera for a while but couldn’t manage to record it. If a lie could save a life then that doesn’t really make me a bad person, does it? I questioned myself. I hated lying to Yuri but I had no choice. I hadn’t realized how deep my love was for her, until I decided to die for her.

“Hey babe, look at how far we’ve come today. Remember the first days we were aware of each other? Remember all those fights? And look at me now I am madly in love with you. Most identities know who they are where they are from but I didn’t. You gave me a name and made me who I am. We both bettered each other in some ways. Our love story is extra ordinary, no one can love like us, and no one can be us. I don’t know why I never told you how much I truly felt about you but I somehow always end up showing you how I felt. Deep down I always knew that I loved you but It sounded crazy. But then again love is crazy. I want you to do this operation and no matter what I want you to fight and be the fighter that I know you are. I want you to wake up after the tumor’s out and live your life happily. No more shedding tears or whining on your journal. Oh and Don’t go even one feet near Whitney or else . . . Just don’t go near her okay, Jason told me about her confession so yeah, you stay away. And most of all, I love you. Know that you are extremely sexily mentally physically emotionally immensely loved by me. No matter what, I stay with you and never let you go. I promise. I love you Yuri Williams.”
“Oh Sasha” Yuri whispered as a tear falls down her cheek. She was blushing so much this time. And she was looking forward to her operation day after tomorrow. With the little optimisms that are left in her, Yuri found herself thinking about her life with Sasha after the operation. Maybe accepting death with arms wide open wasn’t the answer, maybe fighting for her life on that operating table was. Yuri made up her mind about the operation.
If Sasha stood by her side, Yuri knew she was going to be okay.
