The sterile silence of my hospital room pressed in on me as I stared at Alyssa's text. The photo showed Dillon bent over her bed, pen in hand, his face soft with tenderness. Her caption twisted the knife deeper: [Your husband's quite the romantic. Wrote me a hundred love letters. Stayed awake all night by my side. The staff had to tell him you were waking up before he'd leave me.]
Another message buzzed in before I could breathe: [Face it, Mia—you'll never measure up. Do us all a favor and bow out.]
My chest burned, but I'd be damned before letting her see me crack. My fingers shook above the screen when the door creaked open.
A man in a tailored black suit strode in, barely glancing my way before addressing Dillon by the window. "Mr. Dillon," he murmured, "Knight Holdings is prepped for transfer to Mrs. Alyssa per your instructions."
The floor dropped beneath me. I whipped my gaze to Dillon—just in time to catch his smirk. "Good," he said smoothly. "If my wife asks, tell her the company went bankrupt."
Then he turned to me, face morphing into theatrical concern. His hands signed with exaggerated urgency: [Company emergency. Wait here.] For a heartbeat, I just watched—his performance was Oscar-worthy. Yesterday, I might've bought it. Today? The truth rang clearer than hospital bells.
I nodded mutely as he left without backward glance. The door's click echoed like a gunshot.
Alone, I stared at the empty space where he'd stood, nails biting my palms. The realization crashed over me—there was nothing left. No love. No trust. No future worth clinging to.
I yanked the crumpled divorce papers from my bag and slapped them on the bedside table. Then I purged my phone—Dillon, Alyssa, even my so-called parents—each deleted contact a shackle breaking.
Camera flashes lit up Dillon and Alyssa on the press conference stage like golden idols. "This begins a new era for our family," Dillon announced to roaring applause. My parents clapped like trained seals in the front row.
As the crowd dispersed, Dillon guided Alyssa toward the exit—until Nathan materialized before them. "Long time no see," he drawled. "Taking your niece-in-law out again? Where's Mia? Wanted to ask about her hearing recovery."
Dillon went statue-still. "What?" The word came out strangled. "Mia can... hear?"
Nathan frowned. "Since yesterday. She didn't tell you?"
The blood drained from Dillon's face.
