They showed up at my door, begging for one last chance to talk. With no other choice, I led the three of them into the pack's gathering hall. The moment they stepped inside, Dylan and Marcus dropped to their knees. Their faces were twisted in regret, their entire bodies radiating agony.
Dylan spoke first, his voice raw. "Bella, a full moon after you left, we both had the same dream. In it, we… we did unforgivable things to you, one after another."
Marcus picked up, his words trembling. "It felt too real—like it had actually happened. That's when we finally understood why you left… why you were so cold to us."
I stayed silent. The two wolves before me were already breaking down, tears streaming freely. Then Ember suddenly lunged at me, sobbing. "Bella, please—help me beg for mercy! I never meant to ruin your bond! I didn't do anything wrong! I just… I just liked them and wanted to repay their kindness—"
"Shut up!" Dylan snarled, yanking her back. His entire body shook with fury. Marcus stepped forward, his voice a growl. "You lying little snake. You were the one who turned us against Bella. We saw the marks you hid—proof you never loved us. You sought us out just to hurt her because you couldn't stand her being above you!"
Piece by piece, their story unraveled the mysteries of my past life. Ember had used me to learn everything about Dylan and Marcus—their likes, their weaknesses. She molded herself into their perfect fantasy, playing coy, playing sweet, toying with them like a predator with its prey.
Cornered, Ember dropped the act. Her eyes burned red as she screamed, "So what if I did it on purpose? Why should she be born an Alpha while I'm just some nobody omega, forced to obey her? I'm just as beautiful, just as talented—why does everyone adore her? I refused to accept it! I wanted to ruin her, to prove her precious bond was nothing but trash I let her have!"
Marcus lost control. With a vicious snarl, he lunged—this wasn't his first time nearly killing her. Afraid they'd disgrace my pack, I snapped, "Enough! Take your drama outside. Don't waste my time with this act."
Dylan's voice cracked. "Bella, I'm so sorry. I was an idiot—I let her manipulate me. I forgot our past… forgot how good you were to us…" Both of them crumpled, weeping at my feet. Dylan kept muttering, "My heart never changed. But you were always so strong, so untouchable… I convinced myself I couldn't reach you, so I clung to her lies instead."
They thought dragging me into their darkness would keep me close—that if they broke me, they could play the heroes who saved me. But the world doesn't work that way. I fought. I grew stronger in the shadows, rising higher than they ever could. They couldn't trap me. Couldn't catch up.
Ember was exiled, stripped of her power. Dylan and Marcus swore to atone—promising never to bother me again, though they'd spend their lives alone, pining. They announced it publicly: no mates, no future, just endless regret.
Now I understood why Hades had called me before I left the institute. "Bella," he'd said, "I know their pursuit still haunts you. But don't worry. This will be the last time."
The dream was his doing—a way to force them to see the pain they'd caused, to realize I'd never forgive them no matter how they chased me. It was time for them to let go.
The night I returned to the Golden Wolf Institute, the full moon glowed overhead. I didn't know what fate awaited those three. But my path?
It was brighter than ever.
