I stood frozen in my courtyard, staring at the ground as the day's humiliation replayed in my mind. My classmates had torn into me - cruel taunts flying, trash hitting my back. And where were Dylan and Marcus when I needed them? Off playing knights in shining armor for Amy, as usual.
The crunch of footsteps snapped me from my thoughts. I looked up to see my so-called protectors standing before me, guilty expressions plastered across their faces. Dylan cradled Amy's perfectly healthy dog while she clung to Marcus's hand like some damsel in distress.
"Bella, we heard about what happened at school. You okay?" Marcus asked, his voice dripping with fake concern.
Dylan chimed in with that trademark insincerity of his: "We're really sorry. Had no idea you'd get bullied like that."
I scoffed. "No idea? Please. Even if you knew, you'd still have chosen Amy over me in a heartbeat."
Marcus shuffled his feet, eyes darting anywhere but at me. "We were just being nice to Amy," he mumbled. "Didn't mean to leave you hanging."
A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Leave me hanging? You two were so far up Amy's ass you forgot I existed. And now these half-assed apologies? Save it."
The memories flooded back - all the times they'd stood by while I suffered, always running to Amy's side instead of mine.
Dylan's face twisted defensively. "We mean it, Bella! We care about you. We just... got distracted."
I shook my head, disappointment settling in my bones. "Spare me the act. Your priorities couldn't be clearer."
As I turned to leave, Dylan grabbed my arm. "Wait! We're sorry, okay?"
But I kept walking. Their empty words meant nothing. Then Dylan's grip tightened, his voice turning saccharine. "Don't be like this, Bella. Amy's just... important to us, you know?"
Marcus nodded along like a puppet. "Yeah, we didn't want you feeling left out. You're still our... friend."
I yanked my arm free, fury boiling in my veins. "Cut the crap. You've shown me exactly where I stand. Go worship your precious Amy like always."
Marcus moved closer, guilt written across his face as he reached for my hands - until Amy's dramatic wailing cut through the moment. "Jimmy bit me! It hurts so bad!"
Like trained puppies, they scrambled to her side, cooing and petting her hair with genuine worry - the kind they'd never shown me. My bitter smile said it all. More broken promises, more neglect.
They didn't even notice when I left, too busy fawning over their queen. The realization hit like a gut punch - I was just an afterthought to them.
The car door slammed behind me as I escaped the toxic scene. Through the rearview mirror, I caught them watching me leave, their guilty faces almost convincing. Almost.
City lights blurred into streaks as I drove, the sting of betrayal fresh as an open wound. That's when the black sports car pulled alongside me.
The window slid down, revealing piercing blue eyes and a jawline that could cut glass. Electricity shot through me as our gazes locked. Then it hit me - I knew that face, just... different now.
"Professor...?" The word slipped out before I could stop it.
His devastating smile appeared as he mouthed a single word: "Soon."
With a roar of the engine, he vanished into the night, leaving me breathless. Who was this man? And what did "soon" mean?
One thing was certain - my life would never be the same again.
