After several days apart, Amaury looked exactly the same. No signs of heartbreak, no anger over being deceived.
The hostess took his charcoal gray coat. He sat across from me in a black turtleneck, fingers interlaced, resting on the table.
I had no idea what to say, so I stayed quiet.
Finally, Amaury spoke first: "The way you researched me, studied me—have you done that with other guys?"
I'd expected him to ask why I lied to him. This question caught me off guard.
"...No."
It was true. Even with Dante, I'd never put that much effort into learning someone's preferences.
Amaury's expression didn't change, but something in his eyes relaxed.
"I—" I wanted to say I hadn't meant to deceive him, but the words stuck in my throat. I lowered my voice instead.
"I'm sorry for lying. I know you have every right to be furious. If you never want to see me again, I can—" My hands clenched. "I can quit."
Amaury paused. "That's not why I'm here."
"I've been thinking these past few days. I really like you, Katrina. Even knowing you lied to me, I still like you."
That was so typical of him—terrible at romantic talk, but brutally honest when he tried.
His love was like everything else about him: straightforward, no games, no hiding his feelings.
"But relationships built on pretense don't last. What I like about you is that you never give up when things get tough. You have clear goals for your life. You know what you want and you don't let anything distract you."
"I like that we're compatible that way. I don't care if you actually hate art house films or never want to ski in Colorado or think my taste in wine is pretentious."
"I think when two people are together, shared values matter more than shared hobbies. We're not just lovers—we're partners, teammates. We should be walking the same path, not drifting apart until we end up strangers."
He looked up, those light amber eyes completely serious:
"I really like you. I hope we can both stop pretending from now on."
"I want to be with you forever."
I sat there stunned.
I wanted to say so many things, but when I opened my mouth, my mind went blank.
Nobody had ever chosen me with such certainty before. My whole life had taught me not to expect anything from love.
So I'd learned to use strategy, manipulation, tricks to get what I wanted. I thought that was normal, that it was how things worked.
Most people just settle for someone convenient anyway. True love only exists in movies and romance novels—like ghosts, everyone talks about it but nobody's actually seen it.
Find a decent guy who checks your boxes and make it work. Love is just a luxury most people can't afford.
I thought I was being realistic.
Until someone saw through all my bullshit and told me he liked the real me.
He said I didn't need to pretend anymore. Said he wanted forever.
He wasn't like Dante.
Using my old playbook on him felt like an insult to who he was.
In that moment, all my complicated emotions collapsed into one simple truth. I could have said a dozen things to make him happy, but all I could do was nod.
"Okay. I promise."
Amaury smiled.
He rarely smiled—when he did, it was like watching ice break on a frozen lake, revealing clear water underneath.
"Then I forgive you."
