When the new assistant had a stomachache, my cold, untouchable CEO husband Alaric Marchand—who once only cared about me—made her a cup of ginger tea.
I immediately asked for a divorce.
"Seriously? Just over a cup of ginger tea?" Alaric stared at me in disbelief.
"Yeah!"
"Whatever, Isolde Whitmore." He clenched his jaw and let out a cold laugh. "Just don't come crawling back when you regret it!"
Alaric and I were each other's first love.
We started dating since high school—he was my entire youth.
So he was convinced I couldn’t live without him.
But the truth was, that ginger tea was just the final straw.
The signs that he didn't love me were hidden in every corner of our daily life.
He thought I depended on him, but he never realized I was the one he leaned on all along.
"You really want a divorce over a damn cup of ginger tea?"
Alaric glanced up from his desk, eyebrows raised in that familiar expression of disbelief.
"Don't you think you're being a little dramatic here?"
I nodded firmly. "I want a divorce."
He leaned back in his leather chair, crossed his arms and looked at me with that infuriating smirk.
"This is the ninety-ninth time you've threatened divorce."
My stomach dropped. Had I really given him that many chances?
Alaric's mouth twisted into a cruel smile.
"Ever heard of 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'? Do it enough times, and it loses its punch. Face it, babe—you can't live without me."
Just then, his new assistant Aurora Kingsley knocked and walked in, carrying a men's business suit jacket over her arm.
I recognized that jacket instantly—it was Alaric's.
After years of marriage, I'd been the one picking out his clothes, ties, cufflinks, watches—hell, even his boxers and socks.
I knew his closet better than he did.
"Mr. Marchand, I'm here to return your jacket. Yesterday... I can't thank you enough!"
Alaric's response was cool and detached. "Don't mention it."
He glanced at me, then asked her, "Feeling better today?"
In the past, hearing Alaric show concern for another woman would've driven me crazy with jealousy.
I would've confronted him, demanded to know if he was into some young girl at work.
But after countless fights like that, he got fed up.
And honestly, so did I.
So I just turned to leave, leaving him to play concerned boss with his precious assistant.
But I didn't expect Aurora to stop me.
"Isolde, wait! Please don't misunderstand—Mr. Marchand didn't cheat or anything! The jacket was just because I got my period yesterday and stained my skirt. He let me wear it as cover!"
I couldn't help but turn back and stare at her.
"When exactly did I accused Alaric of cheating? Is this how you stir up drama between your boss and his wife?"
"And for the record, we're not friends, please call me Mrs. Marchand. Don't try to buddy up to me."
Aurora froze, clearly rattled by my sharp tone. Her eyes immediately welled up with tears that threatened to spill over.
Total wounded puppy act.
"Isolde!"
Alaric shot up from his chair, pulling out his handkerchief to hand to Aurora while glaring at me with ice-cold fury.
"Jesus Christ, what's wrong with you? She's just a kid!"
"What's the point of bullying someone fresh out of college?"
Aurora kept her head down, tears streaming as she sniffled, "Please don't be angry, Mr. Marchand. This is my fault!"
"I should apologize to Mrs. Marchand!"
She turned and gave me a deep bow. "Mrs. Marchand, I'm so sorry!"
Alaric immediately pulled her back up, his face dark with anger as he glared at me.
"Enough, Isolde! Save the entitled CEO's wife energy at the office!"
