I wrapped my arms around myself, crushing humiliation pouring out with my tears.
The coworkers were going ballistic:
"Jesus Christ! Caroline's such a slut—God knows how many times she's cheated on Henry! She doesn't deserve him!"
"And now she's kidnapping Lillian! She's straight-up psycho—let's trade this bitch for Lillian!"
"Exactly! Henry, Lillian's gonna die! We gotta save her now!"
Even Liam looked at me with complete disgust, tugging on Henry's sleeve:
"Dad! Save Mommy Lillian! I don't want this nasty slut anymore!"
Henry stared at me, his expression torn.
Finally, he spit out through clenched teeth:
"Caroline, your one last chance. Tell me the goddamn truth, and I'll believe you."
I actually laughed. "No, you won't."
"How the hell would you know if you don't even fucking try!"
The desperate worry in his eyes looked just like that teenage boy who'd risked his life to pull me from that burning car years ago.
I closed my eyes, hearing this tiny voice inside:
Trust him once more. Just one last time...
We were so crazy in love once...
Opening my eyes, I stared straight at him, using every ounce of strength I had:
"I swear on our baby girl's grave, Henry. Please, I'm fucking begging you—believe me just this once..."
"Those kidnappers? Your mother hired them."
"Lillian? This whole thing's staged."
From the video, Lillian screamed:
"You never even visited your daughter after she died! You're just using her memory to manipulate everyone!"
The words barely left her lips before a hand cracked across my face.
My tears fell along with the last of my hope.
The crowd erupted in furious screams:
"Bullshit! Lillian's an angel—she'd never pull something like this!"
"This bitch has lost her fucking mind! Now she's trashing Henry's mom!"
Henry's expression went dead cold.
He slowly released my hands, stepped back, his voice like ice:
"Caroline, you don't deserve my love."
"Make the trade."
Two thugs grabbed me and dragged me toward the water.
They hauled Lillian up, soaking wet.
She collapsed into Henry's arms, all vulnerable and pitiful.
"I was so scared I'd never see you again..."
As we passed each other, she let out a short, satisfied chuckle.
Like she was mocking how pathetic I was.
Next thing I knew, I was tied to that boulder and sinking into the ocean.
SPLASH!
Seawater rushed into my nose—felt like a thousand needles piercing my lungs.
"Help... please stop..."
The kidnappers were cracking up as they ripped off what was left of my clothes:
"Hey there, Mrs. Harrison! We're old friends—why so shy about getting naked?"
They kept dunking me underwater, pulling me up right before I'd drown.
"How's this? Deep enough? Going long enough for ya?"
"Mrs. Harrison Senior doesn't like you as a daughter-in-law. Why can't you just be good?"
The pain in my belly was getting brutal.
Warm liquid flowing out, instantly disappearing in the ocean.
"I'm... friends with the Elvadors..."
They looked at each other and burst out laughing.
"Why the hell would the Elvadors give a shit about used goods like you!"
"If you actually mattered to the Elvadors, we'd hand you our heads on a silver platter!"
Back on shore, Henry started out just watching coldly.
Barely paying attention while Lillian sobbed all over him.
But gradually, his expression changed.
Something was wrong.
This wasn't some performance.
Caroline... was actually dying.
Just as he started to rush forward, two gun barrels pressed against his temples.
"We told you if you fucking hurt her, you'd die ugly, remember?"
