Leander thought he was onto something good and started laying it more real.
He said I'd ripped off three deals from them to snag first place, that when my apartment flooded I moved in with Lucien. Said I seduced him during work, and he got so pissed he had to call off our engagement.
Basically took everything he and Isolde had pulled and dumped it all on me while making himself look like some innocent victim.
I was so over his bullshit!
I hurled my glass straight at him.
"Cut the crap! Leander, there's a limit to how much garbage you can spew. You're the one who was screwing around with Isolde—quit trying to flip this whole thing."
I looked at Winston. "Don't buy into any of his lies."
He gave a nod and had someone escort Leander and Isolde toward the door.
Leander couldn't believe Winston was taking my word after like one sentence.
He kept fighting it, struggling against security. "Mr. Winston, come on—they're just trying to scam you into throwing money at their company!"
Winston just shrugged. "She wants funding? She gets funding."
When Leander saw he was getting nowhere, he pushed Isolde forward.
"Okay fine, don't take my word for it, but you'll trust Isolde, right?"
Isolde went all in, super confident. "Everything Leander's saying is the truth! Thalia jumped companies and slept her way to the top!"
The whole vibe in the room went ice cold.
I waved at the waiters to get these jokers out of here.
While they were dragging him out, Leander kept shouting, "Mr. Winston, Isolde knows you personally—why would we make something like that up!"
"Knows me how?"
Winston stared at Isolde forever, totally blanking until his assistant leaned over and whispered something.
"Oh yeah... the scholarship girl from our program."
His face went dark as he told security to bounce them.
When Isolde saw he remembered her, she started yelling even louder.
"Mr. Winston, I swear, working with Leander is your smartest choice! Thalia's nothing but a scheming bitch—you can't trust a word she says!"
Winston's expression turned scary and he held up his hand to stop security.
Isolde thought she'd finally won him over.
Instead, Winston's assistant slapped her right across the face.
His look was absolutely terrifying, voice full of pure rage.
"I've enough to here with you morons. Talk shit all you want, but there's a line. Let me catch anyone running their mouth about my daughter again and I'll take back every dime of that scholarship money—plus your pathetic little company can say goodbye!"
Leander's head jerked up, staring at me like he'd seen a ghost.
"Wait, what?"
"Thalia's your daughter? But... her last name's Everhart..."
I stared back at him with zero expression. "I go by my mom's name."
