When I came to, I was all tied up and Leander had dragged me back to our apartment. He was pouring gasoline all over the carpet, staring at the lighter in his hand with this totally unhinged look.
"Thalia, I already said I'm sorry! What's so wrong with marrying me?"
I had to play along to keep him from totally losing it.
"Leander, okay, fine. We can get married. Just put that lighter down first."
He stared at me for the longest time, then started cackling like some deranged lunatic.
"You're bullshitting me!"
"You just wanna con me so you can run back to Lucien! You lying, backstabbing whore!"
Leander chucked the lighter onto the floor and the whole apartment exploded into flames.
"I got nothing left anyway, Thalia. Come die with me—I'll wife you up in my afterlife."
I stared at the flames around me in panic.
"Leander, if you wanna off yourself, don't take me with you!"
But the guy seemed to black out from all the booze, just laying there waiting for the end.
Leander had locked the door from the inside, and I was tied up. I ended up passing out from all that nasty smoke.
When I woke up, me and Lucien were sharing a hospital room.
The news covered the whole crazy story—Leander set the fire on purpose,just to get back at me.Lucien swooped in and saved me, getting torched in the process.
I was bawling when I asked him, "That was the 15th floor! You could've died—why didn't you just wait for the fire trucks?"
Lucien coughed a bunch, looking all embarrassed.
"Your dad told me if I wanted to be your husband, job one was keeping you safe."
"Besides, it was do-or-die time—no clue when the firefighters were gonna show. Your life was the most important thing."
I was so touched I just hugged him super gently.
After Lucien got better, we hung out more and more. He finally spilled his feelings, and we became official.
On the day of Leander's funeral, Lucien actually showed up. Said he wanted to thank the guy not marrying me, so he can finish his dream to get together with me.
When both our families got together to plan our wedding, my dad spotted my mom who hadn't seen for a long time and shot Lucien this knowing look.
"Damn good job! You totally nailed it!"
