Across the ocean in a dimly lit room, I watched the Virell family's stock prices plummet while swirling my wine glass, settling back into the leather sofa with satisfaction.
"Congratulations, Mr. Albrecht. It won't be long before the Virells are completely under your thumb."
Zion Albrecht's lip curved into a smile. "I never imagined the second Virell daughter would be so ruthless when it came to her own family."
"You're giving me too much credit. What kind of family would just abandon their own daughter and sister?" I took a sip of wine, savoring the irony.
The day I'd called for help, Dad and Damon weren't actually busy at all. They always cleared their schedules for anything involving Celeste's events. The busy signal was just them hanging up on me—a fact confirmed by Zion's informants at the party.
Dad had always seen me as expendable. And Damon? He'd already used me to secure his position as heir. I'd outlived my usefulness.
"Good thing you switched out the kidnappers Celeste had arranged, or I really would've lost all ten fingers."
Zion chuckled. "Just following your suggestion. But I hear you've been digging into my family's financial records lately?"
My hand froze mid-swirl. He stood up, that dangerous smile spreading across his scarred face as he gripped my chin. The pressure wasn't painful, but the threat was unmistakable.
"Remember why we're working together. You're here to help me destroy the Virells—nothing else is your concern. I can fake someone's death, but I can also make it very real."
My breathing hitched for just a moment before I smiled back, covering his hand with mine. "Of course, Mr. Albrecht. We're the perfect partners."
He looked surprised and released me. "My personal doctor says your face can be fixed. Start preparing—we'll schedule the surgery soon."
My eyes lit up at the news. As he headed for the door, I called out, "What about your scars? Have you ever thought about getting them treated?"
He turned back. "Does my appearance bother you?"
I quickly backtracked. "That's not what I meant at all. It's entirely up to you."
He studied me for a moment, then left without another word.
