"You tell me—what the hell have you been doing all day while I'm at work that requires medication?"
Michael's face was ghostly white, his jaw clenched tight with barely contained rage.
"It's your fault for never being home!" Vanessa snapped back, her voice like a whip. "Jessica's pregnant—she needs support! If her own husband can't be bothered, who are you to judge how she handles the loneliness?"
Her words struck a nerve. Michael's anger flickered, but he stayed silent. Vanessa shot me a knowing look, and I quickly melted into his arms, whispering apologies like a well-rehearsed script.
After some coaxing, his anger dissolved into guilt. He pulled me close, his hands gently cradling my belly as he murmured apologies—to me, to our unborn child.
The next few days, he actually came home early, asking how I was feeling with real concern. His sudden attentiveness was a balm to my frayed nerves.
But seeing the exhaustion in his eyes from all those late nights, I swallowed my own needs. I even ignored Vanessa's calls, determined to make things right.
As for Daniel? He swore the mix-up with the oils was an honest mistake, his face the picture of remorse. He even offered free prenatal massages to make up for nearly harming the baby.
I refused. Michael and I had talked—he never hated my postpartum body. My moment of weakness had just been a desperate cry for validation.
Shame burned through me. I had a husband who loved me—how could I have even considered crossing that line? Especially with Vanessa's cousin.
But it wasn't too late. I could fix this.
I kept Vanessa out of our conversations, knowing how Michael felt about her.
Then her call shattered everything.
He was cheating.
Had all his affection just been for the baby?
I rushed to Vanessa's, collapsing into her arms in hysterics—until she pressed a voice recorder into my hand.
She'd seen him with another woman. Followed them. Recorded everything.
And what I heard destroyed me.
That woman was his real love. I was just the nagging wife he tolerated for the baby. He called my body disgusting, admitted he only touched me out of obligation.
All those late nights? Dates with her. He'd even promised to divorce me after the birth and marry her instead.
I never thought Michael could be this cruel. That frantic hospital visit suddenly made sense—it was never about me. Only the child.
The world tilted. My blood turned to ice. A sharp, twisting pain shot through my belly—as if our baby, too, recoiled from its father's betrayal.
