My mind reeled. At that moment, Vanessa was my only lifeline. She pulled me into a tight hug, her own heart breaking for me.
"Typical man. Remember my ex? Cheating bastard—I caught him red-handed. They're all snakes. This isn't on you, sweetheart. Don't you dare blame yourself."
A dark thought crept in—was it me? Was I not enough to keep Michael interested? But Vanessa shut that down fast.
"Please. Look at me." She gestured to herself. "I was a size two when my marriage imploded. Still got dumped." Her voice turned bitter as she mentioned terminating her pregnancy, walking away clean from that "disgusting pig" of an ex.
"So... what do I do?" My voice wavered.
Her eyes dropped to my stomach—a weird, lingering look that made my skin prickle. Before I could say I'd never hurt the baby, she abruptly changed gears.
Daniel. She wanted to set me up with Daniel—a rebound to "fix" my heart.
"I can't—that's insane!"
"Why not?" She grabbed my arm, exasperated. "He gets to screw around while you play the dutiful wife? Since when do you follow the rules?"
She spun this wild logic—how pregnancy drains a woman's body, how abortions wreck you (cue her graphic "complications" story), how this was somehow the perfect solution.
Then the kicker: Daniel had apparently been into me since day one. Happy to be the "other guy," giving me the same freedom Michael took for himself.
"It's all arranged. Just say yes."
When I hesitated, she snapped, "What, you still hung up on that asshole?" As if. His cruel words to Sophia had shattered any love left.
I half-rose, wanting to storm home and demand answers—
"Are you trying to lose?" Vanessa yanked me back. "That's how you end up penniless!" If we wanted a divorce, we needed evidence first. No confrontations—just cold, calculated moves.
As she plotted my "best-case scenario," gratitude warred with unease.
She shoved me toward bed. "Sleep. That baby's all you have left of the life you wanted." The words stung—because she was right. I still loved this child, despite its father.
I woke to dusk and the sound of clattering pans. Daniel stood in Vanessa's kitchen, grinning like a nervous golden retriever. My arms instinctively curled around my belly.
"Uh… what's happening?"
Vanessa laughed too loud. "Not my fault! He insisted on checking on you."
The table groaned under fancy dishes. My stomach growled, but Daniel's eagerness set off alarms—this wasn't the shy guy I knew.
Vanessa ribbed him mercilessly. "Couldn't make a move before—too busy being a gentleman." His blush was almost cute.
Then reality crashed back. Michael would be home by now. Would he even notice I was gone?
My phone proved it: Vanessa had texted him from my number. His reply? Do whatever. Just keep the baby safe.
No Where are you? No Are you okay? Just... nothing. The final nail in the coffin.
And just like that, the memory of him whispering to Sophia twisted deeper, turning grief into something darker.
