"Caroline! Don't push it! Everyone's already kissing your ass over this bullshit!"
Henry shoved Liam hard:
"Go! Draw your mom another picture—right now!"
"No way! I won't! I already told you she doesn't deserve to be my mom!"
Liam started grabbing stuff from around the room while he yelled.
Clay animals, LEGO sets, those mini succulent gardens...
"These are all for Mommy Lillian! You can't have any of them!"
My mind flashed back to last summer—Henry and Liam working on those planters together, both sunburned and laughing.
When I saw the carnations, my heart melted thinking they were for me.
Turns out they were always meant for Lillian.
How long have they been in love with "Mommy Lillian"?
Henry kept lecturing me about being reasonable, taking the olive branch when it's offered.
Lillian bit her lip, looking all conflicted.
"Caroline... Don’t say things you’ll regret later. I mean, the baby’s already that six months—are you really thinking about ending it? And all this divorce talk... it’s breaking Liam's heart..."
That hit like a bombshell. Henry suddenly realized I was "playing hard to get."
Liam heard clearly that I didn't want him.
Both of them looked ready to murder me.
But screw it. I was already the loser in this marriage.
Why should I let her throw me under the bus on my way out?
I spoke each word clearly: "Lillian Bennett, get the hell out of my house. NOW."
Instant waterworks. Lillian bolted out the door crying.
Henry and Liam immediately moved to chase after her.
I swallowed the burning in my eyes and slammed the divorce papers against the door:
"Nobody leaves until you sign this!"
Liam opened some "Happy Family" location-sharing app:
"Dad! Why is Mommy Lillian's GPS showing the Manhattan Bridge?!"
Watching Henry grab that pen, I almost laughed out loud.
Just minutes ago, he wouldn't sign no matter how much I begged. But the second it involved Lillian?
He scrawled his name immediately and tried to drag me and Liam out the door.
I yanked my arm free.
Henry stared at me, stunned:
"You're seriously not coming? Me and Liam are going to find Lillian. Done monitoring me now?
In five years of this hollow marriage, I'd spent way too much time playing detective with Henry's every move.
I'd begged him for some basic security, some peace of mind.
For just one night when he didn't come home that I could actually sleep instead of wondering.
But Henry never gave a damn.
"Marrying into money like ours, you've got to put up with some business entertaining."
"You'll always be Mrs. Harrison—what's there to worry about?"
He wouldn't share his location with me, but loved sharing heart rates and step counts with every hot assistant.
One time we made love and some other woman's giggle came through his Apple Watch.
That's when I realized I'd been the laughingstock of his whole social circle.
Henry showered them with expensive houses and cars, swore it was all just business.
For Liam's sake, I kept buying his lies.
Until reality finally slapped me awake.
"You two have such a 'deep and lasting' relationship—what's the point of me keeping tabs?"
I waved the signed divorce papers. "Anyway, we're officially done now."
The instant I shut the door, Henry's face went white.
He suddenly realized how final I'd sounded today, how unlike me it was to refuse compromise.
His heart started racing.
Right as he was about to bang on the door, Liam grabbed his arm in panic: "Dad! Lillian's heart rate just flatlined!"
Henry's stomach dropped, and he scooped up Liam and took off running.
I felt absolutely nothing, just pulled out my phone and scheduled the abortion.
Almost immediately, a familiar but strange number flashed on my screen.
It caught me completely off guard...
