The night before, he'd watched his wife get up constantly—she barely slept at all.
But he pretended to be asleep because he wanted to text the hot new assistant.
At the beach, he was totally focused on flirting with that surf instructor.
Didn't even notice his wife could barely keep her eyes open.
Not until the screaming started did he panic and run over.
But it was already too late.
"Just a girl anyway—no big loss."
His mother's words echoed in his head. "Hurry up and make a son!"
He didn't agree with her, but he didn't argue either.
Just never let himself think about that perfect little daughter again.
Now, watching that helicopter disappear, Henry suddenly realized something.
This pregnancy—he'd been secretly praying it would be a daughter.
He wanted to make things right, pay back everything he owed.
Because Jesus Christ, he owed so fucking much.
The night his daughter was born, he said he was working late but really went clubbing with some female client.
Her first fever? He was at a birthday bash for the new intern.
Even on the anniversary of her death, he was out diving with Lillian...
"Henry! Don't stress about her! It's all bullshit—those kidnappers are her fuck buddies! She's playing you!"
Lillian dragged herself over on her busted leg. "You saw it yourself! Caroline's been banging those two criminals—you've been played for years—"
"Shut the fuck up!"
Doubt and guilt were tearing Henry apart—his head felt ready to explode.
"That drawing! Why would Liam draw you as his mom? We were always careful around him—how does he know we kissed?!"
Lillian pressed her lips together, refusing to talk.
But Liam, staring at this suddenly scary version of Lillian, nervously held up his Apple Watch.
"Mommy Lillian, how come Daddy sneaks into your room every night?"
"Because we're playing diving games, sweetie."
"But why don't you wear clothes?"
"You swim faster that way..."
"See this kissing picture? Mommy Lillian wants you to draw it for your bedroom wall, okay?"
"Won't my real mommy get mad?"
"She's having a new baby now—she doesn't want you anymore. If Mommy Lillian can't be with Daddy, you'll be all alone..."
The recording cut off. Henry's hands were shaking so bad he almost dropped the phone.
