He thought about how Lillian had volunteered for every night shift these past six months.
How Liam suddenly started rejecting Caroline's hugs.
How his mom kept saying "Lillian's more like real family to us."
How Caroline had said "Your mother hired those kidnappers... Lillian staged the whole thing..."
Henry stared at Lillian's innocent-looking face, nausea rolling in his gut.
This same fucking face had been manipulating him for months, playing victim while turning his own son against Caroline.
Lillian felt the hatred in Henry's eyes and started backing away in terror.
But all those coworkers who used to protect her were now stepping away in disgust.
"You sick bitch! Disgusting homewrecker!"
"Henry, she fooled us too!"
Henry grabbed her by the throat and dragged her into the water:
"You love diving so much? Love going 'deep and long'? Let me give you all you can handle!"
He shoved her head under the waves, again and again.
Listening to her desperate choking and whimpering.
Only Liam hesitated, trying to stop him, but those bruises on his arm were already turning dark purple.
Even as young as he was, he was starting to understand.
"Dad, stop! You're gonna kill her!"
"Liam..."
He finally let go of Lillian, who was twitching like a dying fish.
Knelt in the surf and hugged his son. "We really fucked up with your mom. Want to go ask her to forgive us?"
Liam nodded, confused but trusting.
Henry was just starting to feel some hope when his phone buzzed.
The hospital calling.
"Mr. Harrison, your wife's hemorrhaging badly—uterine rupture. We need to remove her uterus immediately to save her life..."
Henry's phone dropped into the ocean.
When I came to, pale morning light was creeping through the windows.
Henry was standing in the doorway holding Liam—looked like he'd been there all night.
Face gray as ash, eyes bloodshot.
"Caroline..." his voice was shaking. "The baby... we lost our baby?"
