Two days after surgery, Matthias finally show up.
I was joking around with one of the nurses when he walked in. The smile died on my face the moment I saw him.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
Matthias glanced at the bandage on my forehead, then let out this cold laugh. "Calla's been worried about you for two days, and here you are putting on some act?"
Before I could even figure out what the hell he meant, he stormed over.
He reached out and yanked my IV line hardly.
The needle tore out of my arm and I sucked in a sharp breath from the pain.
Blood went everywhere. The nurse next to me let out a shriek and rushed to stop the bleeding.
Once it hit me what he'd done, I slapped him across the face as hard as I could.
"What is wrong with you? Did you die badly in a past life or something?"
"Are you completely blind? Can't you see the bandages on my head?"
When I first started at the company, that was when Matthias and I hated each other most.
He'd call me a stick-in-the-mud with no personality. I'd tell him he was worse than a thug.
Every conversation started with us basically cursing each other to go to hell.
The slap knocked his head sideways. He looked absolutely shocked.
He just stood there, speechless, but I wasn't about to let him off the hook.
After the nurse got my hand bandaged up, I stared Matthias down.
I was about to call security to throw his ass out.
Then another nurse rushed in and said something that made my blood run cold.
"Mr. Keane, could you sign here in the family section for Ms. Marchand?"
Before Matthias could say anything, I grabbed the clipboard.
"Sign what? He's not family."
But when I looked at the form, the words stuck in my throat.
Right there in the spouse box was Matthias Keane's name.
Seeing my reaction, Matthias rubbed his forehead.
"Look, I know you're pissed about Calla, but her mom's dying. Her last wish is to see Calla get married."
"Calla and I grew up together. I'm the obvious choice. After... after her mom passes, we'll get divorced."
My hands were shaking as I pulled out my phone.
There it was - "Hubby" at the top of my contacts with Matthias's same old profile pic.
But in the company group chat, intern Calla Merrin had matching couple avatars with him.
【Getting married next month! You're all invited to the wedding! 】
She'd posted a picture but deleted it seconds later. Too late - I'd already screenshot it.
It was a wedding photo of them. Matthias looking at her like she hung the moon.
The group chat was going crazy, but I couldn't stomach reading any more.
I didn't have a single photo of Matthias and me together in my phone.
The doctor said the head injury left me with some complications.
I'd lost five years of memories.
I was still trying to wrap my head around apparently being married to my nemesis.
And now I'm looking at his wedding photo with someone else.
That's when a text popped up.
From my friend Jessi who works at city hall.
"Hey, about that background check on Matthias Keane you asked for. He got married a year ago."
"Spouse is listed as Calla Merrin."
"That certificate you showed me was fake - no official seal. Not legally binding."
Reading that last line felt like someone drove a knife straight through my chest.
My head started pounding, everything getting fuzzy and painful.
All these leftover feelings crashed over me like a wave, making my nose sting with tears.
I was quiet for so long that Matthias must have thought I was giving in.
He frowned and stepped closer, like he was going to reach for me.
"You..."
Matthias looked completely lost, like he had no clue how to explain this mess.
Makes sense. We'd been enemies for so long, always at each other's throats.
No wonder falling for him seemed so damn ridiculous.
I took a deep breath. When I looked up again, my face was stone cold.
"Don't you know office relationships are against company policy?"
