Our last conversation ended with Calla calling.
Matthias was about to explain something to me when her sobbing pulled him away.
He rushed out with a quick "Wait for me" and never came back.
I handled my own discharge paperwork and packed up my stuff alone.
One of the young nurses felt bad for me and helped out, grumbling the whole time.
"He claims to be your family, but where is he when you actually need him?"
She was pissed on my behalf, but honestly, I didn't care anymore.
Lucky for me, I never change my passwords, so my phone still worked fine.
I found my new house address in my notes app and took a cab over.
On my way out after unpacking, the owner of the coffee shop downstairs called out, "The usual?"
I said yes without thinking.
Before I knew it, I was holding two breakfast sandwiches.
Veggie wraps. I hate vegetables.
The second I walked into the office, a coworker teased me, "Bringing breakfast for Keane again?"
Before he'd even finished talking, someone snatched them right out of my hands.
Calla's face lit up. "Oh Evelina, you're the best! I absolutely love the veggie wraps from that place."
Her fake-sweet tone made me frown.
I grabbed the wraps back and handed them to my coworker, raising an eyebrow.
"These are for you. Careful not to let the fake bitch contaminate them."
He just stood there stunned, but before he could react, Matthias walked over.
First, he pulled red-eyed Calla behind him protectively.
Then he looked down at me.
"Just because Calla and I have the same taste in food, you're gonna take it out on her?"
The colleagues who'd been enjoying the drama went quiet after that.
They kept giving us weird looks, glancing between the three of us.
Makes sense - the two main players in this mess had already been the hot topic of the office since yesterday.
I stayed quiet too long. Someone was about to step in and defend me.
But before she could say anything, Calla started crying again.
All tears and trembling, looking absolutely pitiful. "I didn't know you'd started liking that flavor too after I left."
"When I saw the familiar packaging, I thought Evelina had brought them for me."
Matthias shot me a warning look, then turned to gently wipe her tears.
I stared at the watch on his wrist, couldn't look away.
I'd seen the exact same one on the nightstand at home. The women's version.
By the time I snapped out of it, Calla was saying"If it bothers you, I can apologize."
The fake sweetness was making me sick. Reminded me of those manipulative bitches I used to rant about for days.
I blinked and said, "Then apologize."
Calla choked on her words. Even stopped crying.
I smoothed out my expression and pointed to the name tag on my chest.
"You're an intern. Do you really want to mess with manager?"
"I know you're straightforward, but you don't have to be a complete bitch about it."
I emphasized the word "manager."
According to company rules, Calla should've been fired.
Matthias took the fall for her, got himself demoted to save her job.
I sighed, couldn't understand why he was being so damn stupid.
Last night I'd stayed up reading through all our old text messages.
That's how I found out we'd been having some secret relationship for three years.
Matthias never once made us public.
Now watching him protect Calla like this, I had mixed feelings about the whole thing.
But I kept my face neutral and picked up a box, handing it to Matthias with a smile.
"Hey Matty, better get moving to your new desk."
